Yahoo Drops MingleNow into Deadpool
by Mark Hendrickson on December 6, 2007

Social network for night owls MingleNow appears to have been a victim of Yahoo’s recent acquisition of BlueLithium. According to a post on the service’s blog, MingleNow will officially close on January 7th. No official explanation has been made for the closure. We assume that Yahoo simply isn’t interested in maintaining another social network, especially since its purchase of BlueLithium was for its ad network, not its other holdings. See our early coverage of MingleNow here. The product is now in the deadpool.

  • Good Riddance to this rubbish!
Social stuff is the latest fad!

  • I don’t understand what the purpose is of continually “buying” other companies then “buying” more to replace what you “bought” earlier. Who the heck is running the place, they either have too much money or not enough brains working in there. Make something the BEST and stick with it, stop buying, developing then replacing platform after platform, it’s only making them look flimsy and each time, people will stop becoming eager gerbils for Yahoo’s latest acquisition.

They have the manpower, financial and mind power to do amazing things, yet this is just making them look week and un-visionary.

  • :Jon, according to http://www.shmu...yahoo/g-y-m.htm
Google made most acquisitions in recent years, much more than yahoo and ms, and you are blaming yahoo?

  • This is not surprising at all and deadpool continues to grow.

  • The analysis was right- Yahoo bought Blue Lithium for the ad technology and not for Minglenow. They want to focus on their own social networks…..you know, all those AWESOME social networks they have.
Minglenow was not rubbish- it offered something that no one has- personalized relevant content in the form of professional photographs taken at nigthclub events. Many users who went out regularly were able to have photos of themselves from multiple events and meet others who were at the same party. Low light photos are difficult to take with most point-and-shoot cameras, even ones with 8 or more megapixels. Since there was up to date, real-world photos from each event, people loved it and had a reason to come back.
I think Yahoo didn’t want to bother with managing our team of photographers. I think they were short-sighted. I wish I had known that when I went to the party celebrating the acquisition!!
Anyways, the new, re-vamped 123out.com will be launching soon and it will be just as good and even better.

  • now i’ll clink to that!

see all you other minglingnowers at ruby skye.

  • That’s too bad. Although not my scene and not my type of hang out places they had a good thing going for a specific market. We’re a new social and networking community that’s about to launch and it’s very disappointing to see a site who did some similar things we are aiming to do end up in the Deadpool.

  • [Here was the email to users...]

    Dear MingleNow User,

Thank you in helping make MingleNow the leading nightlife community website over the last year. But even good things come to an end, and due to many factors we have decided to close MingleNow.com.

We will officially close MingleNow on Monday January 7th. You may continue to post your events to the MingleNow community until December 17th at which point no new registrations will be allowed. Throughout this entire period you will have full opportunity to save your profile photos to your computer.

Feel free to take your photos and friends with you to other communities such as Flickr or post your events on Upcoming.

Thanks for being a part of and contributing to the MingleNow community. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

  • hmmm… although I still refuse to consider FSB sapient, he might not be entirely off on his mindless kneejerk this time (@1). Social sites may be a fad, but the demand isn’t, you see! There is just a market saturation point, where everyone who cares will be on the network they fit. This is not the same as retail saturation, as I can buy things again and again from many places, but I only need to be on the network that my friends are on.

Thing is, to be successful with a social network, the niche can’t be too narrow. Look at the most popular ones: MySpace (no niche), Facebook (no niche), LinkedIn (anyone who has or wants a job). MingleNow might have been guilty of this in the long run even if Yahoo hadn’t plundered and burned.

  • By the way, I was a part-time photographer and user of Minglenow- I am just assuming that Yahoo made the decision because I never heard differently. I loved Minglenow and I will continue my photography elsewhere…Please don’t read too much into my comment, it is my personal opinion only.

  • minglenow was garbage. they looked around the internet and said “look at http://www.myspace.com, i bet we could copy that functionality.” then they looked around the internet some more and said “look at http://www.napkinnights.com, i bet we could hire photographers and copy that functionality.” and then they turned out a crappy product and it all fizzled away. i say good riddance to their sub-par product.
