Oh So Shiny Yahoo Messenger for Vista Released

When we recently wrote about the release of Yahoo Messenger for Windows 9.0, one commenter called it “sad” that the version for Vista had not yet been released. Others sounded an outcry over the lack of tabbed windows in version 9.0.
Well, my friends, both are finally here - Yahoo has released a version of messenger for Vista and it has tabbed windows.
It has also been fully skinned for Vista and integrates into that operating system’s gadget bar. Other features include the ability to change layout of our contact list and automatic filtering of contacts as you enter search terms.
Yahoo says it will maintain both this new version for Vista (still labeled as “preview”) and version 9.0 released just over a month ago.

blah, looks childish
People are using Vista? Fake Steve Ballmer will be impressed
Ooh, sweet! Looks like fun!
@Paly, I agree. Is that a low quality image, or is it that ugly? I hope it is smoother and cleaner than it looks in the screenshot.
@Duncan I tried to install XP, but it wouldn’t install on my Vista desktop
Blends well with Vista, looks good - certainly better than MSN’s equivalent.
Oh sure, people do use Vista.. but certainly not as popular as the good old WinXP. WinXP is the best, so far.
Before anyone gets in on the Y! bashing train, I believe as a few motnhs ago, YIM is the most used IM client in the world.
I detest instant messaging. It like a bunch of mosquitoes around one’s face.

darn’it - i made a typo in the above post. I wish TechCrunch would let us commenters edit our posts.
Pretty please.

Heres a bash… YAHOO SUCKS! They place stupid Yahoo ads on your email, webmail full of ads, no FREE POP or forwarding. What losers.
only problem i have with it is that it doesnt access the archives from previous versions and it installs in the app data
This is nice- It blends will in the Vista version. Nice post
when i install YM9 i hd hardtime to find my contact when you had hundreds of them. it occupies big space.. =(
i love YM8.. YM9 overwhelmd d space of your messenger.. hope there’s an option to control contact fonts and avatar sizes… >:D
Yes multi tab would be great!
good god, this is excessively glossy
dawson- gmail also places ads in your mail and it seems to be relevant to the mail i’m reading which makes me wonder if they reading my mail. also this looks great really colorful if i was like 5, i’m sure their targeting kids or drugy people with these colors.
could be possible for multi YM to be opened. or 2 users at a time in a single computer?
CAR-are you from mars?
GMail scan your email to match ads, when you sign up for GMail, read the agreement, it clearly says that.
I remember back in April, there was an article on Computer Power Users magazine about this, and it is highly recommended by the magazine, but it took another six months to polish this?

Looks like Joost with a “Chubby!”
OK, I just saw the demo video on ymessenger blog, I must say I am very impressed, certainly the best looking and feature rich messenger out there, make me want to use Windows Presentation Foundation also.
There is a difference between what people like when they see a 5 min demo, and what they want to have on their desktop all day, every day. Once you actually start using an app for communication, you forget about the frame, and focus almost exclusively on the content.
Measured in terms of efficiency of content delivery, this version is pretty weak. Probably 50% of the pixels are wasted. Call me a dinosaur, but I like my fluff at the 10% level. So, with continued use, I suspect most people would turn off the big icons, and the sidebar widgets. Remember IMvironments? Used them once or twice but haven’t seen one in a while, eh?
One great thing about this “demo” (although I doubt it will persist in the final version) is no annoying inline ads and cross product promotions. That is a real improvement.
You pulling my chain, Mark? Are there any real Vista users out there?
And even if there were, talk about a waste of space on glossy bright colours. Where’s the practicality in there? The less space is used on chat windows, the better - I welcome mini skins.
rybaxs:
Go to contacts and unclick “show 2-line contacts”. This will collapse your contact list into a reasonable size. I had the same issue when I first installed this version.
I usually annoyed by load of features that that comes with Yahoo messenger which I rarely use.
Looks like a lot cluttered from the interface. I don’t wish to see the plugins and “Add contact” buttons all the time. I never use the plugins and don’t add contacts all the time to need a button right there. Please add an option to disable this, like in 8.1
The same thing with Pricing or whatever is that under my status. I never use services from Y! that I have to pay for. And even if, the services are not available in my country. This was also a problem in 8.1.
As with any new Beta software, Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 is not perfect but seems they’ve got most of the major bugs out(or may be not).
Good luck !

What’s with the ‘close’ buttons being so far away from the top right corner of each window? They’ve never heard of Fitts’s law?
New yahoo messanger for vista blends nicely with the theme and graphics. I am waiting for google also to launch their similar gtalk for vista.

Hopefully this puts a little fire under Microsoft’s ass to get moving on some much needed upgrades to MSN.

Dear Yahoo,
Please make a version of Yahoo Unlimited for Linux.
Thank you,
A lot of us
PS - I stopped using locally-installed chat clients once I found Meebo.com
When will this eye candy craze stop? I’m still using the default windows skin, probably the best UI ever made to this point.
I hope Trillian will come out soon .
yeah there are sum real vista users out there
aparently the “preview” doesnt archive any of the messages at all so once you logout there gone
Owh really?
I didn’t notice that.
The F3 function is just for current chat?
Seems like a lot more they save until full release.
My favorite part is th cartoons
Not compatible with 64-bit….
Where is Linux version again ???
Won’t run after install. Err….
I just can’t understand how Yahoo is coming with a cool Vista messenger (that use WPF the new MS UI programming technology) before Microsoft…
Isn’t it a little ironic?

Here I made some more screenshots of Yahoo Messenger Vista : http://www.iterating.com/produ.....enger/wiki
No easy to use invisibility options… you are either invisible to all contacts or none. The only way to be available to some contacts and not others is to group your contacts and then choose to Permanently appear off line to the users you don’t want to see you at that moment.
What ever happened to being able to sign in as invisible and then click on specific contacts and choosing to appear online?
I’m not too impressed.
Although, despite the major invisibility shortcoming, the fact that there isn’t any ads and other crap you don’t need is nice.
It seams ok…
I will give it a try
you can jus invis a single contact all u gotta do is in and rightclick on the contact and chose appear permitly offline to them. singing in as invis and coming online to a single contact i cant find
Does it have voice for conference rooms??? whats the hold up? Yahoo said it was coming? where is it?
thaks for this…………..!!!^_^hahahahahahahaha…I like this
what’s wrong with people these days? you complain too much about how long you have to wait for the release and then rant about how disappointing it turned out. there’s a reason why it’s a preview version… i don’t think the messenger team are magicians who could just code an entire instant messaging application with all your requests in just 3 mos. cut them some slack. fine people waited for 332 days, so what? the guys in the team worked on the application for a longer time. yahoo said it was coming yeah.. but they never mentioned when.. so people don’t have to complain. :)) but anyway that’s most people do.
^^ they want to rant, what is it to you… and i think yahoo’s 3 months late or something.
a failure.
it’s slow, it hangs, and sidebar gadget doesnt work.
Anybody know the direct link for the offline installer of yahoo messenger for vista. been looking and guessing for hours.
