googleogo3.gifIt is now official. Google has confirmed earlier reports that it will bid in the upcoming wireless spectrum auctions. Already, it is toying with other prospective bidders, waiting until next Monday, the last possible day, to file its application with the FCC.

In mid-December, the FCC will release its list of eligible bidders. The auction itself begins on January 24, and could continue through March. Google exec Chris Sacca also notes that because of anti-collusion rules, Google will not be saying anything else about the auction until it is over.

Good, can they bid on the Canadian spectrum auction also.

  2. Renato Agrella

Are they planning to create partnerships with wireless carriers (Like Clearwire-Sprint)? or are they planning to build the first nation wide “free-ad-funded network”? :)

  3. biotech stock

Maybe now we will finally get some decent service at an affordable price.

I second them bidding on the Canadian spectrum too! We’re in dire need of more competition (and resulting lower prices) up here!!

I can’t wait to tell Verizon to shove it up their wazoo.

Imagine what that will do to Google’s share price…

Yep, I can see free ad-supported wireless phone service if they get the spectrum. It makes perfect sense with their recent push of the Android platform. More competition is good when you’re dealing with the likes of Verizon and AT&T, even if it’s Google entering the fray.

  8. biotech companies

I’ll do the same with ATT.

  9. Stever

sounds like we need a “come to canada” petition…

It will be tough for them to get a license because every one of the Telecom 1.0 companies will see them as a threat and oppose the license.

I’m thinking they will buy the spectrum to use as a means to gain support from carriers for Android or whatever their calling it. By that I mean they will rent the space to anyone on the cheap as long as they’re on board with the open source software.

Now this is going to interesting. All the major carriers are going to deal with Google going into the market and opening up the phone market to everyone. I hope Google wins the spectrum.

  13. donation of vehicle

It will take at least a year or more for Google to win the spectrum. Every competitor will try to hold them up in our un-efficient court system.

    I’m completely confused.

Wow, with Google entering into that ring we can expect some major changes to take place.

… but collusion is what I live off of!

Great news for consumers as they look forward to more modernism in todays wireless world. I don’t really care about who wins, all will finally lead to greater choice and better mobile broadband access.

Whatever the strategy, the news of Google’s bid plans got the thumbs up from all the fans. Good Luck Google!

Good news for consumers but there are already big giants in wireless industries.

  19. holiday accommodation

Google has few wireless internet access networks in California, but they are looking for having a national network. It will be interesting to watch.

With the upcoming 700Mhz auction, Google will have lots of competition from the likes of AT&T and Verizon. To win the spectrum will cost a lot.
