Until more things behind the curtain begin to be revealed, i believe this wall always be a controversial argument.
Those who come up with new organic ways of marketing will be the ones to lead the way into new age of internet advertising.

More controversy over previous controversy....

I'm learning a lot from your methods...

Definitely this post is getting a LOT of traffic, probably just because of the comments....

Good stuff... thanks for teaching us this...

What is wrong with people?

The man openly gave strategies to be successful on you tube and other social video platforms. He never said YOU have to do it.. He was simply saying how him and his company accomplished such high views.

as for the second article. he didn't really have to explain himself, but I can see how people might feel like he is trying to make up for his first post. Put yourself in his shoes?

Dan- love the first article. Keep up the great work.

I have to agree with William's comment except the part about why Michael allowed this article to be published in the first place.

Dan pulled the curtain back to reveal what's really going on with some YouTube broadcasters and Michael did all a great service by allowing this information to be published.

All I can say is...very interesting indeed.
I still believe in putting out quality products and putting in honest efforts though.
What goes around comes around and a lot of these unethical practices will be weeded out at some point.
Besides there's plenty of us make money honestly.

I'm belated in reading this - but what does everyone think the purpose of a PR firm is? There really is no such think as authentic viral these day...most things are prompted along. It's nice to be idealistic about content being king and good content driving itself, but that's really not the way marketing works - if you're a company/marketer and not a reader, his posts were very insightful and his ideas are a clever jumpoff point. SEO and getting backlinks really isn't that different and SEO is a unviersal practice

Dan, you're OK.
Stop justifying yourself. From your first post, which was very interesting, I gathered that you run a legitimate business, and have legitimate customers. You are smart enough to use the rules of the game to your advantage. People do that all around the world, every day. You follow the rules of the advertising world.
The advertising world is a silly and effective one. People see a picture of cheese in the paper - they run out and buy it. Everyone knows that Michael Jordan made a vast amount of his wealth from wearing Nike publicly. Everyone knows that Nike makes good gear, but you can probably find better. Michael Jordan knows it too. Does that make him a crook somehow? If you found out that he wears New Balance shoes when he jogs at home, would you be utterly shocked? I hope I'm making sense here.

Keep up the good work - websites will be constantly trying to make your work harder, so stay on your toes. It's what pay your bills, and you're doing nothing wrong.

Dan, you’re OK.
People see a picture of cheese in the paper – they run out and buy it.
Interesting. I went back to the original article, which I think was great to have here on TC as it exposes what's really going on. We're all much better off for knowing that this type of manipulation is commonly used. By airing it so publicly, everyone will use it and it will cease to work (probably being replaced by something else).

I thank Dan for taking the time to write the article, and TC for being oblivious about the editorial process and ducking responsibility for any editing or reviewing what is published.

At the same time, Dan's rebuttal and re-rebuttal are bullshit. They are completely contradicted by the original article and *much* more so by his comments to the original article where he defends the unethical practices.
