It is unfortunate that this has played out this way. I did take the article as a "this is what some are doing" as opposed to "this is what we are doing".

Dan, you're OK.
Stop justifying yourself. From your first post, which was very interesting, I gathered that you run a legitimate business, and have legitimate customers. You are smart enough to use the rules of the game to your advantage. People do that all around the world, every day. You follow the rules of the advertising world.
The advertising world is a silly and effective one. People see a picture of cheese in the paper - they run out and buy it. Everyone knows that Michael Jordan made a vast amount of his wealth from wearing Nike publicly. Everyone knows that Nike makes good gear, but you can probably find better. Michael Jordan knows it too. Does that make him a crook somehow? If you found out that he wears New Balance shoes when he jogs at home, would you be utterly shocked? I hope I'm making sense here.

Keep up the good work - websites will be constantly trying to make your work harder, so stay on your toes. It's what pay your bills, and you're doing nothing wrong.

Interesting. I went back to the original article, which I think was great to have here on TC as it exposes what's really going on. We're all much better off for knowing that this type of manipulation is commonly used. By airing it so publicly, everyone will use it and it will cease to work (probably being replaced by something else).

I thank Dan for taking the time to write the article, and TC for being oblivious about the editorial process and ducking responsibility for any editing or reviewing what is published.

At the same time, Dan's rebuttal and re-rebuttal are bullshit. They are completely contradicted by the original article and *much* more so by his comments to the original article where he defends the unethical practices.

I DETEST these bastards that manipulate YouTube. It has ruined YouTube. I've posted 300 vids on YT since it started with over 5 Millions views under my "Wallyworld" channel - and all those views were achieved honestly and naturally. Sometimes it takes a while for a video to be fully appreciated.
These spammers have been targeting me daily with their crap. I've lost count of how many channels I've blocked - hundreds and hundreds. Take them all out and shoot them, I say. YT has gone to the dogs since Google took over with their "partners" and their ads everywhere.

How does one survive in the online world without viral and SNS marketing.
We are just learning the game, so if you dont follow the online rules, however immoral they might be, how does one survive? If I abuse it beyond a point, internet has a option - you can be ignored or deleted from SNS by your so called friends.
Even if i have the best, quickest, most credible, relevent content, how do i reach users and tell them about it, if there are tons of guys doing SEO to inflate their ranking on search engines, even when i have the most relevant content. I have to join them, and use viral, SEO, SNS to reach out. Plus if the viral stuff is not good, it will die a natural death.

Is stopped reading just after "the internet is changing". This is the usual crap spouted by people either trying to peddle their fake expertise and insight, or who believe every new fad signifies a major paradigm shift, and haven't been around long enough to see the familiar patterns.

The fact is, the internet hasn't really changed all that much in the past decade. The platforms and protocols have changed, the audience is bigger and technology and bandwidth have given us new tools, but the underlying mechanisms are still very much the same. That's because of the simple fact that internet consists of *people*. Individuals may change, but people as a whole, not so much.

To simplify: marketing a**holes + gullible fools = manipulation. Adding the internet as a medium neither changes the equation nor the internet.

I had no idea how many naive people there are out there. I wonder if this is how people felt when they introduced full colour printing or shiny plastic packaging... imagine the outcry if marketing agencies started doing mail drops with free samples... ... or the horror of interrupting your music on the radio with and advert....
