Common guys.....
He is not an idiot to just use microsoft trademarks on live documents.
there has to be a bigger picture so as to why he used those logos.
You people just guess he is an idiot n crazy to go after microsoft??
even a 15 year kid will know about trademark violations, and he is the creator of Hotmail.
Only time will tell if he is a fool or you all critics are idiots.
One suggestion....do something and then comment on others works...

If Open Office could provide a sync ability with an online documents repository similar to GoogleDocs, then surely this would be what everybody wants? Flash, in my opinion, is a poor choice for platform development as it simply cuts out too many users how either don't keep their player up-to-date or don't want to bother with it.

I'd love a way to sync my Open Office docs with my GoogleDocs.

I tend to agree with MA. Plain and simple - the claim "taking on Microsoft" is way to audacious without ever a public beta of the product.

As for Sabeer Bhatia - I don't think he's involved in mgmt. Just provided capital it seems. His successes after Hotmail have been non-existent or very limited. Last I heard he was talking about how a government official asked him to "build" a tech city. Jury is out on that one.

Mike,

I agree with you 100%. Entrepreneurs (1st time or repeat) should move in stealth until they can demonstrate their concept has some real value.

Anyone can claim their 'new company will change the world'. But few have the smarts, ability, grit, and ambition to actually make it happen.

The one gripe I have is why dedicate a post to what seems like nothing more than a baseless claim at this point? Why not wait until there's some merit and instead dedicate the editorial space to the many young companies vying for TC love?

If it isn't bad enough to try and make your Live Documents sound a little bit like a Microsoft Online Office Suite.
But doesn't the logo also have a passing resemblance to Apple's Quicktime Logo.

But well, it is not reasonable either to ask MA to write any positive review,
nor do I think MA's reviews are particularly brutal, if you happen to also
read blogs like, eg., www.allthingsd.com (and particularly, on yahoo's
100 days review last time..)

After all, do recall that MA had some interest in Omnidrive, which has been
comarketing quite a bit with the Zoho suites.. thus it's not unreasonable
to see MA review Zoho oftentimes positively.. after all, TC is his blog...

But then, I do agree that those 1% or 10% mentions were not prudent..
and it was insightful in one comment that it's equiv to, like, owning 1%
of the software market, eg... and you know there are thousands of IT
companies in this world fighting to own that 1%... ;-)

Regards,
/ac.

Sumanth, if I were you, I would have invited Mike immediately for your ‘technology preview’ to prove him wrong. However, I know you will not invite Mike because you do not have your product ready. Prove me wrong or be prepared to stake your own reputation.

*** THIS IS MY OPEN CHALLENGE TO YOU PROVE ME WRONG or STOP ARGUING. ***

Mike, I don’t think you were harsh. You doin your job right. Hotmail founder is starving for a single success after hotmail and if he is serious, he should get a better management. Everyone should visit and read their ‘Company’ page from top menu to realize how immature company and management are.

Do not treat this as racist comment. I have high respect for many good Indian startups without any big names and we are investing in them as well.

@ 33
Michael,
As I have already mentioned above, the 1% figure was simply to set context for the total size of the market and not that we are targeting any such figure. Also, we have never talked anywhere about attempting to be a "Microsoft Office killer" - what we are trying to do is provide a choice to users - the choice and flexibility to work on the browser or on the desktop...in Microsoft Office if they so choose to do so but have the same user experience along both the productivity and collaboration dimensions on either platform.

Regarding releasing the product, what we have made clear in multiple places in that we are providing the technology preview for invited users and that was in fact the reason for the press - for letting people know that they can sign up to get on the invitation list...if we were looking for coverage on Techcrunch, we would have written to you with a link to try the product as we did last time.

Finally, your review is ironical in one way that you might have not foreseen - as I have mentioned before, we built this online Office suite partly because of the feedback that YOU gave us when you had reviewed our earlier incarnation and had mentioned that we need to build a bridge to online Office applications to round out our service...so despite your cuss words and summary dismissal, we continue to be grateful to you for the advice that you had offered earlier...we may have not gone this way if your earlier review hadn't set us thinking about this option!
We will provide you with a preview of the service shortly - hopefully you will take a look at it then.
Cheers,
Sumanth
For the Live Documents team

Michael,
As I have already mentioned above, the 1% figure was simply to set context for the total size of the market and not that we are targeting any such figure. Also, we have never talked anywhere about attempting to be a “Microsoft Office killer” - what we are trying to do is provide a choice to users - the choice and flexibility to work on the browser or on the desktop…in Microsoft Office if they so choose to do so but have the same user experience along both the productivity and collaboration dimensions on either platform.

Regarding releasing the product, what we have made clear in multiple places in that we are providing the technology preview for invited users and that was in fact the reason for the press - for letting people know that they can sign up to get on the invitation list…if we were looking for coverage on Techcrunch, we would have written to you with a link to try the product as we did last time.

Finally, your review is ironical in one way that you might have not foreseen - as I have mentioned before, we built this online Office suite partly because of the feedback that YOU gave us when you had reviewed our earlier incarnation and had mentioned that we need to build a bridge to online Office applications to round out our service…so despite your cuss words and summary dismissal, we continue to be grateful to you for the advice that you had offered earlier…we may have not gone this way if your earlier review hadn’t set us thinking about this option!
We will provide you with a preview of the service shortly - hopefully you will take a look at it then.
Cheers,
Sumanth

Flash is not necessarily bad..

In fact, it makes box.net tick..

I've been a longtime hater of this flash thing since 1999.. until youtube proves what flash can do..

and box.net showed that it actually adds useability to web-based web services, for those who believe firmly in the web services direction.

as for me, I always believe in the hybrid model (desktop + webtop)..

Now, talking about that, why people are not bitching on parakey, yet discredits heavily on this live-documents (whose maker being instacoll, which, as i understand it from the website, is along the same line of direction -- fusing the desktop and the webtop)..

instacoll (it's the first time i hear about them) at least has actually released more much more info than parakey (now facebook's)..

but since i hate firefox (even though i'm using it to type this post), i don't have too much high expection on parakey anyway..

then about the PR stunts, isn't google doing the same thing, with opensocial (which is good stuff imho)..

@53 - be sure to actually use the IP address of the earliest occurence (last IP) in the X-Forwarded-For header string.. for quite a number of IP recorders only record the IP that's actually the proxy server (and/or cache server)'s IP... that said, of cos a lot could be inferred from the network address itself (in addition to the host address)..

I believe that would be an interesting view.. though, if, given such a system, ppl will launch new web2.0 services to enable ppl to get around it.. ;-) /ac.

I don't usually comment on this site but I see a lot of comments are missing, do the principals edit them? what are the rules? The comments that are missing didn't have curse words in them albeit they were very attacking at a personal level.
I saw some comments about flash here but I don't see how it relates to this product? I am sure flash may not be right for many applications but before we go on a tantrum about it we should see how it matches with the requiremements of the current product.
And can someone pls explain how google docs is a benchmark? Even if I was blind I would call it ugly, it is an utterly uninspired product. How dare they call its MS competitor, I think if products this low in quality can make that claim anyone should be allowed and Sabeer is no exception.
