Divshare, a startup we lightly praised, has apparently put its domain name and service up for sale.
Generally putting your service up for sale on a random domain name forum is one step above just shutting it down. It means you see no real hope for growth, can’t raise any money and don’t want to keep paying the hosting bills out of your own pocket.
The company won’t comment on the sale, which doesn’t show much business intelligence. Not commenting on rumors is one thing, but posting your company for sale on a forum and then not talking to users to explain what you are up to suggests that you are not very serious about building community trust. People may not treat whatever founder David Altschul does next very seriously based on how this situation is being handled. We’re putting it in the DeadPool for now; if it sells to someone serious about pushing the service forward we’ll update.

I’m wondering if spending time building community trust would make a whole lot of sense for them at this point.
Morgan - I think it does, assuming the founders want to be taken seriously in the future.
another one bites the dust
Hi Mike,
I would appreciate it if you could credit the original source for this.

Thanks,

Hey Mike,
How about pulling skinnyr out of the deadpool, then? My site has over 5400 users now (1500 daily active), is in the black, and a new release will be out in spring with new features and new revenue channels.

Raising cash for abstract business ventures is not always easy.
Many 2.0 companies will unfortunately end up where many 1.0 companies ended up…
Mike — Why do you continue allowing the adsense spam link comments (#7, #3, etc)?
Management is still the #1 key to success in business.
Jon - this came in through email (3x). I’m usually happy to link to other stories, but in this case you don’t actually say anything at all in your post.
Really? Wow. This was my favorite free webhost and I dafinitely was going to upgrade soon. Too bad.
Divshare is a good service. I am suprised they would sell it in this way, by advertising it in a forum. I recently launched an image hosting service http://www.echopic.com and I’ve seen fantastic growth, so I don’t see the reason to sell so quickly. I hope it works out well for them.
Does anyone know what he’s looking to get for his assets?
I don’t have an account with dnforums, nor do I want to open one just to message him
If they’re ready to embrace failure, then that’s a good thing. Embrace it and move on with the next project. That’s always recipe for success. but it doesn’t smell like they’re ready to do that..
Sorry to hear that: I liked their site.
This doesn’t seem right. I thought the team moved to Silicon Valley not too long ago?
According to dnscoop.com
The estimated value is: $2,224,800
IMHO, I dont see this as anything more than a PR stunt and free publicity. No one in their right mind would invest so much time in a site like divshare and just post it for sale on a forum.
In the meantime, I’ll be using http://www.filebam.com as an alternative.
Look at their service. They likely hadn’t a single active user beside themselves.
They have no transparency, so…. rest in peace.
Really, a deadpool when the site is at 600 on Alexa? More like a straight sale…this site isn’t going anywhere and with that traffic it will definitely find a new home.

I guess they needed a vacation after that move!
But seriously, it amazes me that the new web 2.0 companies still need high $$$$$$$ investments with all the resources like servers, bandwidth, etc getting cheap. I really don’t see the reason to move to the Silicon Valley with my startup, unless I am looking to sell or just shmooze with the Big Money Men. I am fine right here in San Antonio.
Ive been watching these guys for a while, and while they might have seemed great on paper, to actual users there were some serious problems. Each blog post they made had users complaining about upload issues and speed problems. Just curious Mike if you guys read company blogs to check out user comments. Even posts about random features they would add had people slamming the company for not focusing on bread and butter issues of being a hosting company. Users like myself loved the ease of use and features, but you cant be a hosting company and have speed and upload issues and expect to stick around.
My kingdom for a reliable, reasonably fast, free file hosting site . . .
Man! And I had such high hopes for them too!
I guess stuff like this happens when the 800 pound Google Gorilla and King Kong Microsoft jump into the arena.
I love using DivShare to host streaming music files on my site. In light of this post I should probably be considering other options, although it’s hard for me to believe someone would just kill the site/service upon purchasing it.
I have been pretty happy with the service, but only as it relates to the embeddable streaming music player.
This Deadpool call seems a tad premature.
I’ve been using DivShare for a long time. Yes, they have minor connectivty/speed issues here and there but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad service.
I hope this is just a rumour..
Oh… I have to start looking for another good place to store my files like DivShare,
Who are their main competitiors?
Best file storage and back up are 3
1. http://www.box.net
2. http://www.orbitfiles.com
3. http://www.esnips.com
Thanks Paul
no problem
i see however that Orbitfiles.com is relaunching, so be patient i guess few more hours for this service
I don’t see this as real. I don’t see why they wouldn’t post a comment on their blog about a possible sale if it was anything other than a publicity stunt or a fake.
Box.net is one alternative and they are fantastic (although offer a lot less for free than Divshare does, but I just got a free upgrade through TrialPay).
MediaFire is another alternative and offers unlimited files and bandwidth for free. They had a serious amount of downtime a couple of days ago though…
I am waiting in anticipation for OrbitFiles. 2.0
Peter,
I would say the old divshare (free file hosting) is most similar to http://www.filebam.com and the newer divshare model (embeddable widgets) most similar to http://www.box.net Thats just based on my own experience.
Tim,
I agree its either a pr stunt or fake — no way would a company like divshare would just post a for sale on a forum and not mention it on there blog.
Lets hope thats the case. Could be a major flaw in Divshares current business model — namely the high cost of streaming/embedding without the tools to advertise on that content. Divshares 200k users are most likely free users who are not subscribed (just check out where a majority of their traffic is coming from: hk, thailand, brazil, chile, based on alexa).
Professional Media and Document Sharing is great but needs some capital to maintain and grow (adsense wont cut it — boosting subscriptions would help) — box.net should buy them out since they have a strong backing.
my .02 — tracking this day by day as it intrigues me.
OMG, It couldn’t die! It’s the best service for File Hosting IMHO.
Hmmm…Thats unfortunate.
2 Millions USD is a lot of money for a Malaysia-based business.
Put this in your mind: not all people are greedy.
Don’t carve that gravestone just yet.
I’ve spent time with both founders, and they are technologically deep and serious about this space.
We’ve been working with them since February, and they have addressed every feature and API request we’ve needed to date.
In spoke with Rob (DivShare’s cofounder) and they are making enough cashflow to keep up with growth, and have excellent upside.
Just because they want to capitalize on their fast growth and early success doesn’t mean they are in trouble.
They might just be smart enough to know where they rock. And where they don’t.
best,

I love divshare, it’s the best, easiest to use and fast file hosting service they use. Too bad that they killed “groups” feature but love them anyway. Plus it’s addicting.
I hope it’s just a rumour because this site is too good to be gone.
On the other hand i don’t believe they would stop doing work and just close with all those files stored there.
@zed: you’re right. Also I (and many others) have paid the Direct service and don’t want my money back, I want Divshare up!
