The Blogosphere Needs A Vacation
by Michael Arrington on November 20, 2007

What’s the top news story on TechMeme this fine Tuesday afternoon?

It’s a story about the sudden disappearance of the word “is” from Facebook’s status message yesterday. Then, today, it reappeared. For a brief period of time, users could create a status message that did not include the word “is” in it.

Wired Magazine saw fit to write on it, as did most of the other top tech blogs.

I say we all need a vacation. Badly.

Facebook really should drop “is.” It’s awkward. I’m not always “is” doing something. Something I “am” or “isn’t” or, well, you get the point.

Haha good one. I have written about bloggers considering themselves to be a part of QRT [Quick Reaction Teams] to be the first one to write about anything….but certainly not this!

Here is that article

I think the blogosphere needs to find, discover and write about more topics.

If Mark Z farts tomorrow at lunch in a crowded cafe, will TC be the first to break wind? I mean, break the story?

haha as stupid as it is, thank GOD. i hate trying to craft a message with that stupid is there. it should be more like twitter. open to whatever i want it to say.

In other news, Uncov will be giving out free razor blades to the first 1000 Web 2.0 bloggers to visit us.

But first, let’s discuss this need in detail. I’ll only take a vaca if it’s tops on techmeme.

Mike - how about this idea - you go on vacation for a week, let me run TC :-P

Hmmm… I noticed Myspace recently made the same sorta change.
The decision to change must have been made at the big social network supreme chancellors meeting…. er, sumthin’.

blogfree day!?

I think social networking sites are as much to blame for obesity in US along with Mcdonalds and pizza huts. While facebooks and myspaces are extremely popular and bloggers have endless appetite to write about them, in the end they drive little productivity. There should be a ‘blogfree day!’.

Writing about a blog post you decided to take a vacation from. That’s funny, isn’t that a blog post in and of itself?

While on the topic, I was receiving a odd string error when updating my status last week. The status kept on placing “is is” before my input status. I thought maybe I had mistakenly wrote “is”, in the status field. So, the next time I made it a point to leave out the “is” and it still read “is is…” Seems to be the opposite problem.

@ Arrington…..When are you interviewing Ron Paul? Or did you already? Thanks.

What are peoples obsession with Ron Paul? A bit off topic?

@digress… Meanwhile a technie from india in US throws off his wife from a moving car cuz she didn’t bring enough dowry. Darn!

It could be worse, it could be yet another lets all analyze the deeper meaning of Techmeme post :-)

Nobody cares about blogs anyway.

I couldn’t agree more. Post real news or don’t post anything.

Kubayah.

I’ll gladly take one :)

But Duncan is exactly right, I saw this as an opportunity to write a tongue-in-cheek post about something lightweight rather than pour more syrup on the “Techmeme is the devil” pancake that’s been clogging things up as of late.

I think Allen post#9 is on to something. TCrunch staff, during the Thanksgiving holiday (just Turkey Day, or Black Friday), should take time off, but leave behind one poor soul to man the editorial store. Then, say six ‘fill in’ bloggers let loose for one day, a mix of pros and unknowns. Kind of a User Generated Content day, perhaps set up by a contest beforehand to see who gets to fill in. Anyone?

Lol, We do need a vacation but had the blogosphere posted a status update it would have been “The Blogosphere is Needs A Vacation” and we wouldn’t want that would we? I think you’re just mad that you aren’t on the top of techmeme as you typically are everyday (or at least 7% of the time) ;)

Mike, I thought the same thing. Why in the world should this be newsworthy? Insane!

Yap… now even the smallest change is considered news? I will say it is becoming really shallow, the things people are reporting.

When Facebook drops the “is”, I’ll be far better off.

Wow, my life is sad.

In other news, FuckedSuit will be giving out free warm baths to accompany their shiny new Uncov razor blades.

RON PAUL FOR PRESIDENT. He is the only republican who doesn’t talk out of his ass to get rich. If you want democrat, go for Kucinich.

The “is” is back again. See for yourself in my post.

Perhaps, it wasn’t permanent

Worth noting, if only for the fact that it does affect the lives of quite a few, TC readers included (see #2, #6). Same as that email you published, no?

People on FB have different *lives* than people who aren’t, otherwise there would be no dissonance. It should be apparent by now…

Ironically, TechCrunch is posting on the aforementioned topic. And I’m commenting on how TechCrunch is posting on the Facebook “is” topic…

Blogging is such instant gratification and when the well runs dry we all at some point or another have resorted to to writing….anything :) Good thing I am a photographer and once in a while I can take a break from the computer and “see” things worth writing about. Check out my work http://pswhittingham.com

That’s a pretty sad state of affairs alright.

Given that this is now the top story on Techmeme, I guess so :)

How about tomorrow? I think there’s a good excuse for a lot of people in the US, at least, to take it off.

Enjoy your vacation, Mike. Given how hard you work, you deserve it.

Mark

I missed it… I would have blogged it too! I’m going to keep on top of my ‘is’ for now.

I’m thinking Yoga retreat in Mexico. If everyone goes at the same time, I bet you can get a discount…

what a sad sad bunch of people we have become.

All your informations are belongs to CIA… I mean Facebook.

“I say we all need a vacation. Badly.”

But isn’t this just a normal downtime in the newscycle (whether tech-related or general news) in the United States.

We are after all in the day before Thanksgiving.

Further proof of insanity is that now THIS post is on TechMeme :-)

“Is” is a pretty important word. Didn’t the Clinton impeachment turn on its meaning?

Just shows how desperate we are for news articles. Almost “anything” qualifies as news! (this being one! :-)

If you’re going to have OCD anyway, sign up to my blog. Read IT. Sure it’s chalk full of local Canadian IT stuff, but who cares. You’re a compulsive blogging maniac. I blog enough to give you a fix on a daily basis, and my crazy hijinks will keep you BEGGING for more.

Here, here. I vote for the launch of National Blog Off Day.

Michael - You’re positively right on this one. I need a day off and you have my sincere Thanks on Thanksgiving (in advance) for giving it to me …. :)

yes, bloggers should all go on vacation. preferably with Kate McCann.

there’s too much going on every day, but really just a couple of things worth mentioning. Everything on the internet is becoming more and more saturated. i’m gona blow up if i hear web2.0 and social network one more time:)

Time to go deepfry that turkey, Mike. Have a good Thanksgiving - just don’t set yourself on fire ;)

- Stuart

You guys enjoy Thanksgiving.

It sounds like the Tech Blogosphere does indeed need a much deserved break!

Vacations are suicide in the instant-publishing blogarama. Over Thanksgiving I was composing blogs in my dreams.
