Someone asked how a browser could display pages any faster when we've got broadband - does 1mb or 10mb make a difference?

Well, you're right about the cache. You may call it an "illusion" or whatever, but it works and it helps. Waiting for the page to load before it's displayed is an issue of latency. It takes time between you make a request for content (HTML page, images used) and them arriving back on your side of the network.
To minimise the overall delay, you can try to pipeline things in some optimal fashion and get as much of the visible structure of the page displayed while downloading the rest of the content (images) at the same time.
And if possible, you can use the cache to help things further.

Also, Opera's rendering engine seems remarkably efficient compared to Firefox. There's a CSS benchmark somewhere, showing results of different browsers tested against a set of cases... of course it's not the whole story, but it paints a good picture.

Installed it in its own folder and am I glad i did that! It was very slow to load - over a minute - but it could have been the add-ons, but I checked that and most of the add-ons are not compatible with it - so I uninstalled them. Then my misery began. I had to restart Firefox and I was told to restart the PC !!! Back to the drawing board lads

i myself also is a firefox addict. i rather use firefox and opera than IE. IE really sucks in terms of box principle in web designing.

firefox gives you more plugins like no other browser can give.
hopefully (crossing fingers) the memmory leak will be resolve :)

I did a memory use test, comparing Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.9, Mozilla Gran Paradiso Alfa 7, Flock, Mozilla Firefox 3.0.b1, and Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.11. All of the browsers running in safe mode, and loading just a web page, set as home page: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/granparadiso/, in a PC. The results are the following.
Flock used a max of 43,742 KB and a min of 32,096 KB in "steady state".
Firefox 2.0.0.9 used a max of 28,000 KB and a min of 26,196 KB in "steady state".
Gran Paradiso used a max of 32,672 KB and a min of 23,632 KB in "steady state".
Internet Explorer used a max of 23,616 KB and a min of 23,556 KB in "steady state".
Firefox 3.0 used a max of 30,820 KB and a min of 17,132 KB in "steady state".
The steady state means after running couple of minutes, without making no changes, nor loading any other page.I'm a user of Firefox since the first beta was available, I love it because of its stability and security, so I was surprised about the results I obtained. And, decidedly Flock is not a low-memory-user browser to Firefox.
The guys at Firefox development team can optimize the code to achieve a less memory maximum use, as the difference between the initial 30,820 KB and the final 17,132 KB shows.
Anyways, Firefox is, definitely, a great and secure browser; and, in my personal opinion, the best browser.

Funny... I use FF both at home and at work (newest stable release) with alot of plugins (I am a web developper...) And use loads of tabs aswell... And I have not had a problem with crashes or mem leaks yet... I open FF as the first program in the morning (Maybe should have it in my start programs :D) and I first close it when I logout to go home. And I have plenty othr programs open also... No problems...

So unlike IE7 that crashes (Not only itself but the entire desktop manager) if you use a few setTimeout(); in javascript...

Same here I retired from being Firefox fan after 1.5. I am not plugin (sorry, extention) fanboy, did not install any of them but I got the same problem.

One of the goodness in version 3 is some problem relate to Thai language and Thai font (which were exist there since Mozilla M5) has been fix. But it still left others ugly "justidy bug", you may see the last shot on this page:

As fare as I have seen Firefox is the worse browser for Thai (lang and font), opposite to IE Opera or even Safari.

For me, the usefulness of plugins in Firefox outweighs the memory issues. Actually, AdBlock Plus alone more than makes up for FF's flaws for me.

As far as FF3 is concerned, I'm currently beta-testing, and really I'm not all that impressed. I don't really see much difference from FF2, except for all the random little irritations of a Beta. Granted, I haven't been pushing it to the limits; I rarely need more than three or so tabs open, and only have it on for a few hours at a time.

I agree with this article 110%.

All these people defending Firefox.....you must not have a job doing jack where you surf the web all day like me. Because of this, I consider myself a seasoned Firefox user.

And let me tell you something. Firefox has serious, serious, serious, serious, serious, serious, serious, serious, serious, serious, serious, serious, serious, serious, serious, serious, serious, serious, serious, serious, serious, serious, serious, serious, and serious memory problems.

It seems like Duncan's problem wasn't as uncommon as I'd assumed.

Starting yesterday, we began receiving more reports of a new memory/cpu usage issue that happens shortly after a normal startup and can spike the CPU and chew up hundreds of MB of RAM. This is apparently happening to people with new profiles or in profiles that have a very outdated list of bad sites for the <a href="http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/phishing-protection/" rel="nofollow">Phishing Protection</a> feature.

What's going on is that soon after Firefox is started, Firefox tries to fetch updates to the site forgery and malware lists -- the lists of bad sites that allows Firefox to warn users about suspected Phishing and Attack sites. If the profile has very outdated or no local lists, as is the case for a new Firefox profile, Firefox is trying to bring down these rather large lists in one big chunk rather than slowly in small chunks. This causes Firefox to consume large amounts of CPU and memory and can slow the users machine to a crawl.

This problem is due to the change in the "SafeBrowsing Protocol" which only affects Firefox 3 Beta 1 and nightly build users. If you're on Firefox 2, this isn't going to affect you.

The work-around for this problem is for us to throttle it on the server side. We're working on that now and I'll post an update as soon as I've got confirmation that it's taken care of.

I have been using Firefox since it first came out and I've never experienced any memory leak issues. Sometimes Firefox gets overloaded if I have a ton of tabs open (like 50-100) and I need to kill the process and restart it, but I've never had it affect my system.

I'm not trying 3 until it comes out of beta, though.
