Duncan Riley said “BrightSpot.tv on the other hand comes with some interesting backers that might just make it a breakout in the space.”

He was wrong. It’s now in the TechCrunch DeadPool.

  1. No Surprise

    ooops!

Sorry Duncan, but even rich guys need business plans. :-)

  2. Mac

Well, I got about $70 worth of Napster and GameFly credits out of them, so it was nice while it lasted. The writing was on the wall though; it was a really clunky interface, and getting shown the same Miller High Life commercial over and over again got old pretty quickly.

  3. Michael Arrington

To be fair, Duncan was fairly ho-hum about them. I just selectively picked the only really positive sentence he wrote. :-)

  4. Duncan Riley

Does go to prove one point though: non-tech guys don’t pick good internet investments :-)

  5. Eli

Proves another point: Duncan Riley does not have much insight into what works and what doesn’t work in the consumer internet space. By “interesting backers”, it seems like he meant “rich people who have no business throwing around money in the internet sector”.

  6. gettit

You guys should razz each other more often in posts, get a real cantankerous atmosphere going, the better for we trolls :)

  7. Coffee Man

Exactly what makes a tech guy, Duncan?

Someone who needs his mother to dress him?

One that hasn’t had a date (with a real female)……ever?

I can continue but I think you get the jest.

You and Mark sure do express a ridiculous amount of arrogance - that would be insulting if we didn’t know where it came from.

If you both are so fucking brilliant why aren’t you doing your own thing, rather than writing for Tech Crunch.

    Non-tech guys…….please.

  8. Duncan Riley

    Eli
read the original post: I never said it would work, and I never said it was brilliant either: I simply noted the interesting backers (they had tie ins to NBL, MBL etc) that might make it work. It didn’t work…as your point suggests, proves that non-tech guys shouldn’t be doing online ventures without outside help, no matter how rich they are :-)

  9. Ummm

@7 - you’re one big fucking idiot for reading this blog then aren’t you, you wally. MA *IS* doing his own thing - it’s called TechCrunch and he’s (reportedly ) pulling in $200k a month.

  10. Joe

@7 - you need to cut back on the caffeine!!

I think Duncan was taking a light hearted jab at himself since he isn’t a “tech guy” in the programmer/coder sense.

  11. Bill

    Fire Duncan!!!!

  12. Michael Arrington

Bill - yeah, not going to happen. joe - i agree, but I think coffee man already knew that.

  13. FakeMA

Hmm isnt duncan always wrong? :D

  14. chall

Not surprising but at least they gave it a try.

  15. Coffee Man

    To Ummm #9.

It’s Mike that owns Tech Crunch, not Mark. Get your shit straight or learn how to read.

(For those already enlightened, straight shit is actually a bad sign, it should be question-mark shaped. I would plug my coffee as a remedy for straight shit, but really any coffee will do!)

Hopefully someone will get the tongue in cheek humor on this one.

  16. Coffee Man

    you wally

Conservative Pulse is changing the scape in social news services by eliminating the liberal bias of the mainstream media!

  18. Daniel Gibbons

I can’t resist responding to ‘Dexter’… By ‘liberal bias’ I presume you mean ‘compliant and uncritical media that really isn’t liberal at all’. And by ‘changing the scape’ I presume you mean polluting the Internet with the kind of reactionary nonsense that makes Anne Coulter seem quite nice after all…

  19. John

Wow, it is from the comments on this post that I see clearly how ridiculously dumb trolls are. Does absolutely every post have to have angry mean attacks. Do people not know how to argue a point without being insulting and rude? If this is interactive media, how sad that it brings out the worst in people. I used to think that these types of comments were from teens, but with social networks on many blogs these days, its sad to see the ages of these trolls in the 30’s and 40’s. One would have thought they would have outgrown kindergarten by then and could play nice with each other.

  20. Jas

I thought i was on myspace for a moment ;-)

  21. mint question

    techcrotch!

  23. elegance

An honest post, you took it on the chin that you were wrong. Good start….

  24. elegance

once more thing i really like the fact you both get involved with the comments. Its much better with your responses than ice cold.

  25. Chris

I have about $20 balance, I was giving money Lance Armstrong Foundation. They also sent me this letter but didn’t say they will pay us this balance. They must have made lots of money and running away.

  26. fukeo

Duncan Riley : “Does go to prove one point though: non-tech guys don’t pick good internet investments”

Nor know enough about video compression and high definition video delivery ;)

  27. Troll

    what’s with the trolling, mike?
    lol - leave duncan alone

  28. Car Donations for Charity

Where is that third round of financing?

  29. Ummmm

@15 - learn to read…uh huh… Where exactly does it say ‘Mark’? What do you think MA stands for.

  30. sam

Within the next couple years you will have to create another channel just to cover all the deadpool companies.

Lots of eyeballs are being bought with no effective way to create sustainable revenue. It is amazing to me that so many have not learned from experiences of just a few years ago.

So what happens to all my credits that I didn’t get to use?
I knew this was too good to be true.

  32. Ryan

I always read people calling other people “Trolls” in their comments they post. So I went and registered “TrollTower.com” Maybe it could be a site where people fill out a quick, fabircated display box about someone they think is a troll. Any ideas??

    #29 Ummm:

    I said this:

“….You and Mark sure do express a ridiculous amount of arrogance…..”

    You said this:

“… MA *IS* doing his own thing - it’s called TechCrunch…”

You was addressed to Duncan for his comment in #8 where he says non-tech guys shouldn’t be doing online ventures without outside help.

Where in this article or my reply does it make any reference to Mike?

Perhaps instead of saying “learn how to read”, I should have said learn to read the post chain AND follow the chain of comments to get the context of the conversation and to whom the comments were directed BEFORE commenting.

As for my post, too much coffee or not Mike, several of the writers at Tech Crunch are getting to be a bit too arrogant for the good of Tech Crunch. It’s one thing to write and harpoon web sites, social networks, apps, etc.. it’s another entirely to generalize people into groups like non-tech, or tech and then insult the abilities of a group.

Lately the writings here from Mark and Duncan in particular have been insulting to many - and the comments have pointed this out. I respect your standing behind your writers, but at some point they are going to hurt your business and reputation. I’d like to think with your experience and character, you would have recognized this and have done some things behind the scenes to rectify this. Of course what you do with your staff is your business, but it should start to show in the posts.

From the way a lot of your readers see it, you are encouraging them to write these flaming comments and not discouraging it.

  34. Fine Banana

moment of silence please, we’ve a funeral to do here..

  35. P2P permited in China

P2P live streaming has been officially enhanced by Chinese government since the begginning of 2007. As you see http://nba.sports.cctv.com/01/index.shtml, people could enjoy NBA matchs online with p2p enpowered system from Koos ltd., a small company in west China.

It was predicted, In 2008, hundreds of Olympic matchs will be shown in CCTV.com by P2P streaming system with millions of users online simultaneously. Maybe that is the time for people to see P2P application by media industry.

–CCTV.com, as the name China Central TV station, is the majoy TV network in China with 75% the civil market.

Brightcove is dead, means the CDN TV is close to the ending histroy.

During the past three years, many Online TV providers came out across the world, such as BrightCove, Zattoo (Switzerland), PPLive, PPS, TVKOO, UUSEE Joost, Hulu and so on.

From my point of view the DeadPool will include PPLive, PPS, UUSEE and others, and the survival ones are only Joost, Zatto, and TVKOO.
