PayPal To Offer Virtual Credit Card Payment Product
by Duncan Riley on November 18, 2007

Paypal will launch a new virtual credit card payment product Tuesday.

The new service “PayPal Secure Card” generates a one use unique Mastercard number that Paypal users can utilize to make payments on sites that don’t take Paypal. According to Reuters, the software package with PayPal Secure Card automatically recognizes an e-commerce checkout page and fills out the payment information for the user.

The move is said to be in response to Google’s Checkout service (launched June 06) that also stores financial details for secure online payments.

It’s a great idea; not only does this open up Paypal accounts to shopping on sites that don’t take Paypal, it also provides credit card access to folks who don’t have a credit card (or similar credit style debit card), either by choice or because they are unable to obtain one. On the security front it also provides an alternative to using your actual credit card online, a secure way of using your credit card (if linked to your Paypal account) without the risk of your real details being disclosed.

I wonder what the fees will be for this, very interesting service that should pick up a lot of users.

This is very cool.

I guess they will soon tie up with VISA and others tooo.

Don’t have to worry about giving credit cards online anymore.

Cheers, Nag

I will personally definitely benefit from this. One PayPal account for your online presence and you’re set.

Took long enough…

what do you mean took long enough? paypal started beta-testing a debit version of the virtual card system a while back

Looking forward to this.. it is definitely great news for online shoppers :D

This is a great idea and I will implement it right away on my site.

This same service happens to exist in Portugal for a lot of years. I’m not sure how many, but at least around 6 years or more. It’s free and it’s called MBNet. You can check it online: http://www.mbnet.pt

Certainly not an innovation by Paypal.

Is this a joke? They’ve had ‘Virtual Master Card’ for years. And I don’t mean a beta test, and I don’t mean one year. They had it through the site, then they had an Explorer plugin. Plus they’ve always offered areal-world free debit card connected to you PayPal account.

I am not saying the benefits you name are not real. I’m just saying they have been around forever. Long, long, before I ever even heard of Google Checkout.

Is there some new feature that I’m missing?

If anyone wants to use it before Tuesday, click on ‘PayPal Plug-in’ in the left column, where it’s been for a while. Then install the plug-in, and choose ‘Generate Secure Card’. Away you go.

More here if you have an account: https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_vdc-plugin-intro

And not that I’m trying to be a punk, I just wonder what’s coming Tuesday.

It should give huge boost to paypal….keep it up!!

I’d like to learn more about the security offered behind these, especially after reading what one commenter complained about in March of this year: the lengthy, unwieldy PayPal chargeback process (see signature URL) in the event that the vendor overcharges what was authorized.

“Let’s rebrand our old product and call it virtual credit card. Hell, we even save the costs to actually create plastic and ship it to the customer.”

Boring.

@Duncan: You should refer to companies using their legal names, for example, PayPal, not Paypal.

The new part is the browser addon, but I won’t use it personally if uses PayPal balance or my bank account - I don’t make the cashback, which can be up to 5%. Both Citi and Discover have something like this already and I will use theirs as it still generates me cashback, which I can’t ignore as it sums up to thousands of dollars a year. Anyway, I installed what PayPal calls “Plug-In” and it seems really nice.

@Duncan: I agree with 16. If you slip up and use proper grammar - sorry, ProperGrammar - again, there will be Hell2Pay (TM).

This is a great idea and I think I will be using this as often as possible instead of using my credit card.

Another way to spend my Paypal money ;)

This is the way things should be done. A tool that lets you use your PayPal account anywhere and does all the messy form fill for you. It hits all the buttons of enablement, convenience, security and effectivness. This will shake things up! I like it

Sounds interesting… looking forward to somebody testing it out on my site upon release!

Jon

This isn’t exactly a new concept, but still a huge step forward for Paypal. Although I must say, there are very few e-commerce sites that do not offer a Paypal checkout system.

I still think the best online credit/billing concept is Bill Me Later.

Woah, PayPal promoes itself. - November 19th, 2007 at 8:22 am PST

As has been said countless times, this is not new.

PayPal and Gcheckout are very different services when looking at the backend, and this PayPal feature just puts it on-par with Gcheckout (or the other way around since PayPal was first).

The “new” part is that PayPal is heavily promoting via consumer discounts to encourage new ccustomer acquisition. Most of us that care are already users, so a poor decision IMHO.

PayPal should be regulated like a bank at the rate they’re going.

It might be worth mentioning that this service is currently only available to US customers. Something I as a UK customer have just learned having spent the last hour trying to get the bloody thing to work…

According to the support person I spoke to at PayPal a UK launch is planned soon.

so anyone using my computer can go to any e-commerce site and not even have to enter credit card info?

Virtual card numbers are the only safe way to shop online - I’ve been using them via Citibank for years.

But talk about security - I’ve seen a chilling warning on the Citi site. I have no idea how real a threat it represents…

I had to disable the PayPal Plug-In shortly after installation as it kills IE 7 - every time you try to close a tab it raises an error and kills all windows of IE (still, the process stays alive). I can only hope that this is all due to the fact that most QA effort was focused on security, not overall quality. :-)

I’ve been using PayPal’s virtual debit card for quite some time. It works well, but not 100 percent of the time.

Next up Greendot buyout no doubt!

After reading that, I would try installing it only on ffox. if it doesnt let you do that, then like this guy said, disable it in IE and stick to using it ffox. for those who want to try it I mean.

@Keith Kamisugi: Neither does Citi/Discover work all the time.

@mint question: Firefox addon works fine… The only problem is that similarly to other plugins hated by designers, PayPal changes the original presentation of webpages - changes the styling of controls (Text Areas, Text Inputs, Selects, etc.). What’s surprising is that it’s not intelligent enough and it incorrectly recognizes fields that have nothing to do with its autofill feature as such - it’s annoying. On top of that, it changes the tooltips for those fields.

At least MBNA’s ShopSafe card (now owned by BofA) gave you points whether you used a throwaway number or not. But last time I used the Paypal secure number (about one year ago), I did not get my 1.5% (I’m grandfathered in) cash back.

For those of you planning on using this feature, please pad your upper charge amount a little bit. For example, if your order total is $40, make your limit $100 instead of $50. If you end up changing your shipping method or adding other items, the higher limit offers you and the merchant some flexibility.

I used paypals virtual credit card number like 8 years ago.

This is awesome, as long as it’s available out of the US too.

To JustMo..If it’s a credit card it can be used anywhere credit cards are accepted. So if you want to buy something on a Australian site you can, just like you would with a normal credit card.

This Virtual Card is a whole new dimension on what was there before, anyone who was familiar with old product and uses this new one can see that. This isn’t just about allowing your PayPal account to be used all over the place, it’s also about making the experience of shopping that much easier and more secure. Hats Off to PayPal…more please

JustMo - As confirmed with PayPal customer services, this new feature is only currently available for US based customers. They are planning on a rollout but no fixed dates as yet.

Honestly, it’s a good news but it doesn’t impress me much. Atleast as on now. Probably they are too late on this thing.
As Mike said, it’s only available for US citizens. I being a non US citizen will have to wait for more days. Until and unless i experience it myself, i don’t think i will be able to judge whether it’s a good move or not. Ty

I agree with Michael. Give me the convenience of Bill Me Later and No Payments for 90 Days.

I really wish that PayPal and some of the other services would let Canadians use their higher end services

Damn thanks for someone telling me that I can not use the Secure Card feature in the UK…I been trying to use it for the last 24 hours (and this is the feature which I installed it for.)

i try tinacard i can use it on paypal and more

I installed the new plug-in and Firefox stopped working. I have Vista and IE 7 and something shuts down Firefox. I uninstalled the plug-in and Firefox works again. I emailed PayPal about the problem and all they gave me are system requirements which don’t mention Vista.

I also asked them how to get back to the original Beta version because it worked with Vista and IE 7. So far, nothing back from PayPal. I even tried moving the original Beta version from my old PC with no luck.

AJT, if you are having issues on FireFox only, you can still install the latest version of the plugin and just disable it from Firefox directly (Tools>>Addons>>Disable). Works for me, and I just remember to use IE when shopping!

Clever innovation. It address security, unbanked segments, and increases acceptance for users.

wow this is cool, this is one of the easy that can be gotten time by time in internet payment, thank yo for the information

Virtual credit card from paypal? Sound good. I’d take a look at this. Ty.

This would be perfect if PayPal also offered it for other card brands, not just MasterCard.

I need to pay for something by Discover Card but just have VISA.

The Merchant just takes Money Orders/BankChecks or Discover

Why can’t PayPal, being they work with all the cards, also allow this one-time-use card to be for ANY of the cards they handle????? … Hmmmm????

NOT JUST MASTERCARD

THAT would be innovative, and very handy for the consumer, after all, this was a purchase from someone on eBay, and PayPal is part of eBay, and it would make things so much easier to pay someone.

It would also be a good idea to offer a virtual money order, and / or offer the option to mail an actual money order to someone, without having to go to the bank to get it, put it in an envelope, place a stamp on it, and put it in the mail-box.

OH well!! … even if they did do it, most likely it’ll be too late for this purchase :-)
