The Wall Street Journal Gets Cozy With Digg

There’s a new sheriff in town at the venerable Wall Street Journal, and they certainly seem willing to try new things.

Like the New York Times, the WSJ is now adding Digg buttons to articles. And clicks from Digg get the added benefit of bypassing the paywall.

Links are supposedly being added now, although I can’t find any articles that include the digg button yet.

The WSJ also has links from blog search/discovery engine Sphere on their site, which creates a pop up window with related content.

    Interesting that they would do this. Guessing they are not gaining enough visitors..

    Quoted from digg’s blog: “…you’ll now have full (free) access to the articles submitted to Digg.”

    Guess they will try and give only a few articles away to try and gain some customers.

    I decided to go see for myself and noticed that digg already has some articles submitted and if you scroll down to the bottom of the page the article is written on there is a “Digg This” icon.

    Most of the popular Digg posts aren’t anywhere near WSJ quality, I think they’re targeting the completely wrong market / social bookmarking service. They should be aiming at Newsvine or the like, a different audience which would probably equally ignore WSJ.

    Another site which is the financial version of digg is called http://www.uberinvestor.com. This recently launched site is doing extremely well generating more than 10,000 page views a day.

    Nice job at removing any credit for pligg. You should at least state in your about us page something of a thanks for pligg especially since your using their default yget template.

    ON TOPIC: I agree with Jobe Roberts. Digg is not the quality that WSJ offers.But perhaps digg will change?

    The most interesting thing is the window that pops up after you’ve submitted. It shows one column of the recently popular stories from the WSJ.com on Digg and another column of upcoming WSJ stories on Digg.

    once again, as i read a post like this on your blog which covers - in this case - the placement of a small button on a web site, i have to ask myself, “who really gives a flying shit?” toilet paper with writing on it is more interesting.

    How odd of WSJ. Digg, in general, has become the domain of the radical left. In general, I’ve stopped using Digg recently because most of the articles that were at odds with the far-left political viewpoints were systematically buried. WSJ is not exactly left leaning, in that they are usually fairly pro-company/management. It will be interesting to see how WSJ articles fair against the bury posse’s.
