Apple won't be worried about this. Remember that Apple developers work together with Google's (iGoogle, anyone?) The OS's cater to different types of people..Apple is more flashy and entertainment oriented, while Google is Tech oriented.

I love how everyone missed the fact that this runs OpenGL. Sure you might not want to play Quake on your phone, but by providing the OpenGL API to Mobile developers, we are going to open a whole new flood of video games built for mobile phones.

That right there is worth a ton of money, and would lead me to purchasing a phone running Android.

If they had announced this 6 months ago I might care.

Now it's more of an "eh...this is kind of just an ugly iphone."
Honestly, I think that this phone screams Windows 98 or something in just how ugly it is. You know, just because technology like this coming to phones is relatively new doesn't mean you can't make it look sexy like Vista or leopard. Android already looks dated. The hype was a load of crap.

I say go for it! Break open the entire telecom system. It's ridiculous that we are not free of these data plans and fees. Kick ass & take names. That said, it's a lame video.

I want a business phone. I don't like eye candy. But I do want to be able to browse, reply to an IM, and talk on the phone at the same time. Sort of possible on WM6, but it ain't pretty. Maybe its just way too obvious, but as smartphones become more popular, execs aren't going to be happy with clunky software. Especially execs who are used to using multiple network applications at the same time and utilizing nice user-friendly UIs and visualizations of data.

Android is going to leapfrog.

"Will you have to pay for third-party apps on android, or will people just make them for fun and distribute them? $10M doesn’t go as far as it used to! Some critical questions need to be answered here."

You have to pay for cell phone games and bling right?
They're just .jar files like the apps you make for Android, I don't see why Rogers/AT&T ect... wouldn't have pay libraries of apps just like they do for games and wallpapers?

Anyone talking about security? With an open system like android, security will be a major issue that will keep corporations from adopting it - android will be relegated to the consumer market like the Iphone. The business world will still be dominated by Windows Mobile and Blackberry and probably always will be (people tend to forget that these two are moving targets that are also being upgraded and enhanced on a semi-annual basis). There have been no less than 12 attempts in the past 15 years to create a moble SDK based on linux - how many phones have we actually seen?

Besides being eye-candy, what is the point in many of the graphics intensive applications being developed? Not much. Street view on a phone is cool, but pretty stupid if you think about it - umm...just look up! Some of the integration between contacts and other applications is great, but again this functionality will likely be added to the next versions of both WM and BB. What is the revenue model? Will you have to pay for third-party apps on android, or will people just make them for fun and distribute them? $10M doesn't go as far as it used to! Some critical questions need to be answered here.

The question is the iPhone really a phone ? Or a social sign of power ?

Personnaly I don't want to be a brand slave...I don't want to deal with a company that say I'm above the crowd... I don't want to be on a closed platform...I don't want to pay high prices

I just simply want Internet and phone mobile access. I just want reasonable fees. I just want interoperability. I just want a business phone.

Apple will never bring that...iPhone no way...Give Androïd some times

"Conceptually, this is a great initiative, but the reality is, mobile applications are a nightmare to develop. Not only will developers have to deal with unique hardware configurations of each manufacturer, but also, the ‘pain in the ass’ software configurations of the carriers."

Did you look at the SDK?
It's Java/ANT. It's not compiling your apps to chipset specific machine code. Each machine that runs the OS will have the same infrastructure to run your apps. Capabilities will no doubt be discoverable in time.

It's not like programming IN/OUT codes on microcontrollers with a little PDFs of device functions as hex codes.

If every user needs to connect to XMPP through the Gtalk XMPP servers (which is how the API is set up right now), then doesn't every Android user who wants to actually use Android to it's full potential need a Google login? If you have a google login, you are probably going to use some google services. And don't forget Google has the mobile advertising market staked out. Google has a lot to gain. Lets not be naive here.

Secondly, to people criticizing the Android prototype for not looking like an iPhone. Please. The iPhone interface is not well integrated with any kind of message passing system. Android is. So at least I can receive a bloody IM message while looking up pron. For gots sake.

With Android I could choose to create an application that notifies me of stock price updates by pushing data to my phone on XMPP, and the Android UI could update the app on my phone launch the app, place a notification on the top of my screen...... These are things Apple never thought about! Its about communication baby.

The Android interface, as jumbled as it appears in its present state, still looks much funner to use than WM6. Much.

Conceptually, this is a great initiative, but the reality is, mobile applications are a nightmare to develop. Not only will developers have to deal with unique hardware configurations of each manufacturer, but also, the 'pain in the ass' software configurations of the carriers.

This is why the concept of a 'gPhone' was so promising. Google could develop on their own platform within their own spectrum.

Aside from adsense, does google have plans to charge phone manufacturers to run android on the phone in the form of an 'Android License'? That seems like the best way to go, sort of like MS Windows.

Google will indirectly make money becuase more people will be on or connected to the web with their phones. More connected phoens = more advertising potential.

Something as easy as an application that can break out of the java jailroot to edit the /etc/hosts file could set the Google adwords server to NULL, and kill their revenue. It would be a popular hack too.

Ok, tell me again, I know this is open source s/w but which carrier would opt to develop and support interface to yet another non-Google maps program? Very unlikely IMO plus Google Maps leads to directories, business listing, etc where the ads dollars are abundant. So for you tech head that keeps thinking that Google is doing this out of a concern for developers/common platform, think again.
