2 Billion Photos On Flickr

So the rumors are correct. The picture above, Flickr confirmed via a phone call, is in fact the 2 billionth image uploaded to the site. The photo was taken by “yukesmooks” in Sydney on November 10th with a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi. It has the beautifully minimalist title “Picture 098.”

You can apparently find various milestones by typing in the URL http://flickr.com/photo.gne?id=XXXXXXX, and replacing the X’s with the photo number. Sadly, most of the big milestones are really, really boring pictures.

Flickr says 3-5 million new photos are uploaded to the site daily. That means we just have to wait until…well, someone do the math…for the 3 billionth photo. I hope it’s a good one.

Update: Just as a point of comparison, Facebook has 4.1 billion photos on their site.

    It would be funny if the image that was 2 billion would be something else.

    I’m sure I contributed to around 2% of the images on it. ;)

    Anyone know how many active users on Flickr and what percentage are tagged? It seems a lot of the photos are uploaded by a small population of users. Image search still sucks on the search engines so I wonder how much search revenue is generated by Flickr. With Webshots being spun out of CNET for 40 MM, I wonder if this can be a good business for Flickr

    Just as a point of comparison…

    The vast bulk of pictures taken on facebook are, quite frankly, trash.

    Many on flickr also suck - but the number of photos worth actually looking at is far more.

    I agree with Mr. Crash. Facebook photos hardly figure anywhere. 2 billion flickr photos are worth many billions on Facebook. But one good thing about Facebook is, there is no limit on number of photos uploaded….am I right???

    The number of facebook photos is staggering. I agree that there is some truly amazing work on flickr, but apparantly millions of facebook users have no need for a separate photo sharing site.

    @2 Mike: It doesnt behoove you to critique other people grammatical/spelling mistakes, given the kind of mistakes your own people make when writing posts.

    Maybe you should look at your pixoo picture before you develop an attitude..

    3.3 billion of 4.1 billion on facebook are of drunk college girls/guys with a bud light in tow. i’d put more stock in flickr’s 2 billion.

    Well done Flickr. Shows that they really provide value to the user. I like Flickr. Their business model seems to be clean and working out well for them. It can’t really fail, as a picture says more than a thousand words. Browsing pictures is a lot of fun, and although there are a lot of picures which lack quality (including my own), I’m amazed at the beauty of some of them out there.

    @22: If that’s your idea of titillation then you do realise the Internet has a fair amount of actual pornography? Not many people are aware of this I know but it is out there somewhere.

    I’d say 3.3 billion is a conservative estimate. Facebook photos made me stop going out with my housemates last year and bred in me an utter hatred of cameras generally which I didn’t have before. This is because whereas people used to take pictures at special moments, now they take them every single minute so they can upload them to Facebook, and as everyone has a camera that means you and/or the people you’re talking to/dancing with will be dragged into a huddle to gurn moronically at the soulsnatcher on average every five seconds. F**k Facebook.

    When you comment on Flickr in terms of just the numbers of photos, you really miss the point. It is the GROUPS that make Flickr the place to be, if you want to do more than show some pics to your buds and family members.

    Groups are the showcase for quality images. You could search individual sites from now til doomsday and maybe find a few nice pics–go to a group and you’ll see images from top imaging artists world wide displayed next to images from aspiring amateurs. And you may not be able to tell the difference between the amateur and the professional.

    Want to check out one great group. Better Than Good. Great variety, top quality, a little bit of an edge while not going into the offensive category. Happy viewing.
