Google Only Ahead Of Microsoft In Search: Ballmer
by Duncan Riley on November 8, 2007

ballmeriscrazy.jpgWhilst spruiking the release of Windows Live in Tokyo Thursday, Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer told reporters that Google wasn’t ahead of Microsoft in any way online except with search.

“Google is not ahead of us” said Ballmer, “In the area of search specifically, Google would lead.”

Whilst the Windows Live platform is a positive step forward in Microsoft’s long pubescent attempts to become a leader in online services, it doesn’t come close to Google.

Where for example is the Microsoft equivalent of Google Docs? Oh right, there isn’t one, although you can upload documents to a Windows Live server if you buy Microsoft Office.

Advertising: well there’s Microsoft AdCenter, that allows you to buy advertising on Microsoft sites and not many other places, vs Google Adsense and Adwords, the market leaders by a country mile.

Social networking: well Microsoft does serve ads on Facebook, but pretty soon it will only be the secondary ones. Google has the biggest social network in Brazil and is leading the industry with OpenSocial.

Live Spaces: nice tie in with the MSN chat platform, but still a poor cousin to Blogger as a blogging platform.

Video: did someone say YouTube?

The list could go on and on and on and on…. but I’ll stop there. Certainly Google hasn’t dominated every market it has taken on, but to say that Google runs second to Microsoft online in everything but search says a lot more about Steve Ballmer than it being a true reflection on today’s online marketplace. Perhaps there’s a reason Ballmer photographs so badly :-)

Once again Ballmer is out being Steve Ballmer, just so Google can prove he’s wrong.

http://www.givemebeats.com/

Microsoft should concentrate where the money is.

They’ve been doing tit-for-tat on everything EXCEPT with going neck to neck with Adsense (aka “the pay dirt”).

If baffles me that they can match Google on maps, free analytics, and so on, but they’ve been reluctant to take on the big doG with a REAL response to Adsense/Adwords.

MS saw Apple re-inventing the computer with a graphic interface, took the idea and run with it. Why can’t they do the same with online ads?

Holy shit……

Hey, duncan you better check this shit out.
http://www.trueknowledge.com

This company killed Mike’s Arrington belove powerset.com. I can’t believe this England startup killed Silicon valley’s powerset. I like to say Barney Pell is idiot. I think he should get Steve newcomb back.

Barney. Do your job you jackass. You have $12 VC million dollar. Should us damn demo!!! Not 2009.

Show it…
SHOW IT!!!

A couple of omissions on this post.
1. You forgot about Microsoft’s acquisition of Aquantive which is the lead display internet advertising firm. There’s a very good reason this was Microsoft’s biggest acquisition in history.

2. Social Networking - Microsoft Xbox Live is among the highest revenue generating social networks - several million users at $60 a year. I’m sure it makes several magnitudes more than what Orkut brings in. If they were able to pull Nintendo in and/or the casual gaming crowd, look out.

3. Mail - still the most important web app. Hotmail has at least a 3 to 1 lead over Gmail.

Microsoft leads with Windows - both clients and servers - as well as Office.

Despite Google’s apps - office software is still on virtually every desktop.

Also, Microsoft does have many partnerships whose software or consulting services are used by many small to medium businesses.

MS has been toying with the idea of something like adsense for a really long time now… but somehow it doesnt get out…

Doesn’t like MSFT do, you know, like FOUR TIMES the revenue of GOOG??!!!

Go Steeve! Go Steeve!!

context: Ballmer was talking about online in everything but search. Sure, MS does some good things (and I think their mapping is better btw, the 3D stuff is amazing) but to say that Microsoft beats Google in everything but search is the height of badly placed arrogance.

Tyler
see comment 9. Context. Do you really believe that MS is dominant in everything but search online? fanboy stuff aside, seriously?

@#7: Like, he didn’t, You know, say they made more money. he like, said they, you know, like lead them on everything but search.

With, Like, Even a passing acquaintance with like the internet you would, you know, like know this.

Oh, Google owns the biggest SC in Brazil? It’s not that much worldwide and yet Orkut is still a flop how I think. Maybe it will grow with OpenSocial, but FaceBook is the leader, worldwide.

The web services available are only basic suite,
Maybe CRM,SCM and ERP for SME would be the next logical step.

http://tekno-world.blogspot.com

The fact that YouTube, Orkut, and Docs makes hardly a dime makes this post rather comical.

And then throw in the fact that Microsoft has Live, Windows and Office and its even more of a joke.

Google has always only had ONE product and that is it’s advertising program.

It remains to be seen how great this company really is.

Alex H
context. Is Microsoft ahead of Google in everything online but search? bzzz, dont think so :-)

And most of all, Google is free and listens to its users !
Two HUGE things on which they are far beyond Microsoft !

Nicely done, as always ballmer reveals -his- knowledge of what happens on the net

I Am Not Posting To Spam My Blog - November 8th, 2007 at 3:38 am PST

The real achievement is that they’ve become a monolithic entity like Microsoft, yet managed to retain the adoration of fanboys. Logic says they should have realised by now that Google is a business bent on one thing - increased profits and shareholder value through domination of as many markets as possible - not a caring sharing collective.

Not that I can see why you’d want a bunch of naive geeks humping your leg, but still, an achievement.

Wow, Ballmer is so clueless. This is even more funny than the Iraqi general during the war that claimed victory on TV.

I’ve been gradually distancing myself from Windows after my Vista install, obviously going to OpenSUSE Linux. After my iPhone purchase and playing around with the new Mac OS, you realize just how far Windows (and MS) is.

BTW Stevo, those headphones are “behind the ear”, unless you think they’ll cover your bald spot.

You have also forgotten that Microsoft is well ahead of Google in IM with Live Messenger. And also as noted in the comments, leads three-fold in email with Hotmail. Orkut owns Brazil, but Microsoft properties take on all of Latin America and Europe. I wouldn’t jump so fast to attack Microsoft for being Microsoft, it makes for poor assessments and biased blog posts.

Ballmer photographs terribly, but Sergey and Larry aren’t that hot either. I too love Google and have trouble liking Microsoft, but above all, prefer fair reporting.

Google may lead MS in online display (banner), but it’s far from the market leader in that. Google has a lot of cool features but… how many of them make any real revenue?

Microsoft’s online has been troubled but at least they clearly approach things as a business, Google approaches things just to be Google.

Ballmer is a business guy and to say Microsoft is dominant online is not farfeched. Most google apps as far as I know are not very successful in terms of business and revenu while Microsoft certainly seems to be making good partnerships and strategic decisions.

There’s Adsense which google is clearly a leader, my hunch is Microsoft is planning a better platform with their recent facebook deal.

I have to agree with you Duncan, MS are behind in alot of ways. Not only are they behind, they’re not coming up with anything new. Ok, you can argue that Google ‘borrowed’ Overture’s idea for paid advertising, but they implemented it far more effectively in my view. I’m getting known for bad-mouthing AdCenter, but there is NO comparison to how it works against Adwords. The adCenter interface is shocking.

The other issue is brand. Google is brand which people is still trusted by the majority of web users where as MS is perhaps seen as a bit of a dinosaur with some geeky guy at the head of the company. For this reason, Google will always be favourable in the mind of the user, so will probably lead in most things for quite a while (unless Facebook REALLY starts to take off…)

“Social networking: well Microsoft does serve ads on Facebook, but pretty soon it will only be the secondary ones.”

Not “pretty soon,” the new Facebook ad platform is launched and working very well.

When I hear the name Microsoft, I think UGH! They present their software before the bugs are out of it and we get stuck with it…that’s my experience.

JJ :D

“Google is not ahead of us, in the area of search specifically, Google would lead.”
I STAND BY THAT STATEMENT!
Google has no computer operating system!
No headquarters in Redmond!
No committees for everything on earth!
No *NtN’s locked in the basement!
………
The list goes on and on and on and on …….

You people should really get your facts straight!

FACT!
“Google is not ahead of us” said Ballmer, “In the area of search specifically, Google would lead.”

who is known for their philanthropy, Microsoft of Google? Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation — who got a $30bln donation from Warren Buffett vs buying a fleet of airplanes (http://valleywag.com/tech/party-plane/google-ceo-sells-a-jet-++-and-eyes-two-more-318708.php).

This isn’t breaking news to me. Google is the search specialist, while Microsoft is more spread out. What did you expect?

Duncan,

I am not sure if you are stupid or plain hypocryte.

If google didn’t have adsense and you didn’t get cheques to pay for your meals then you would see so many stupid applications Google has launched.

Google Docs? Pathetic! I tried using that a couple of times and I could not digest how JURASSIC it is compared to Office 2007, it brings back Wordstar memory lane. I would rather have a USB or online storage to make sure I have the file I would edit in a real Office 2007 apps.

OpenSocial? Not long ago you had great comments with Facebook, now that Microsoft has made a deal with them, OpenSocial suddenly became a hit to you which was just hacked on opening day!

Stop making biased comparisons especially when you do not have technical competence to back you up.

Also,

I trust Steve Ballmer has the corporate intelligence to back him up. He has the numbers, bottomline, results, etc. to make comments like that.

What do you have?

Next time, research and present facts not airhead comments!

Google Rocks!!!

Ballmer looks disgusting.

Microsoft, Google and Yahoo - are the three big players on the net, in your pcs and a lot more. A good competition will bring only better products. This is happening now. We are enjoying a lot more developed and advanced applications from all three. I am depending on all three of them. A day cannot be without one of them.

It seems that many of my thoughts have been voiced already by previous commenters. I can’t tell you just how childish this post sounds, and your comments certainly substantiate that notion as well. I, for one, am tired of the “neener neener Microsoft” posts. Google Docs is garbage…the pure existence of the service doesn’t equate to it’s superiority when its plain garbage. What if Google had a large compost pile behind its headquarters. I am sure you would galavant into the room, screaming at the top of your lungs how much further Google is in the manure game…but in the end, its just a pile of shit.

Holy crap people, did half of you even read the post? It doesn’t matter if you like Docs or not or whether you think that Adsense is Google’s only product. TO think that Ballmer truly believes that Microsoft trails Google in only search online is so mindnumbingly stupid it makes my head hurt.

Next time, read a post thoroughly, think it through, then make your comment. Google is the online king, Microsoft has Windows, Office and Xbox so of course it makes more money than Google. Jeez, you must be financial wizards to figure that one out.

@E.T.Cook
Thanks for proving my point. Once you calm down, find a woman who will actually have sex with you, then read the post again. It doesn’t matter what you think of Docs, the fact is that people do use it and use it enough to make it a leader in online document sharing.

I realize Ballmer is a semi-smart guy here but seriously doesn’t their PR department just cringe when he goes on a rant like this? What Microsoft really needs is a Department of the Obvious to handle these statements.

Mr Balmer should have backed himself with real facts. By the way how much does search contribute to overall online activity? If search contributes say 90% then Balmer’s assertion is wrong!

Ooops I meant to say “Ballmer”

In French we’ve got an expression for this kind of attitude which is “plus c’est gros, plus ça passe” (the bigger it is, the most it will spend…) .

A good laught anyway… :-)

A Google fanboy calling out someone who mentions that Microsoft is over 4 times as profitable as Google? Duncan, you’re an idiot.

Google’s also leading the market in frivolous Web 2.0 acquisitions too! Go go Jaiku/Youtube/Orkut.

The leading social network in Brazil? One South American country? Jesus; Microsoft should just hang up their shit and go home then. You wouldn’t want to fuck with such a powerful social network. I hear Orkut is quickly becoming the number 1 social network in north korea too, over Friendster!

And last I checked, for every person that uses Google Docs, there are 10,000 that use Microsoft office, a legitimate software product and not some dogshit SaaS Firefox-killing AJAX nightmare.

Fail.

That picture kills me. The way he’s wearing that headset makes me want to cry.

Duncan is a biased google fanboy - November 8th, 2007 at 8:29 am PST

Microsoft is behind because it doen’t have docs and spreadsheets? Oh right, it only has over 500 million people using a real office product. It would really make sense for them to counter a crap online attempt by google to “be the leader”.

What is GTalk’s market share? What is Gmail’s market share? What is blogger’s market share? Orkut? are you serious!?

“leading the industry with opensocial” c’mon on! They just announced it and it’s a complete defensive tactic due to facebook’s utter dominance. If it was Microsoft that did opensocial and google/facebook were partners I’d bet your commentary would be “microsoft makes lame attempt to catch up with opensocial”

So lame…. Nice “reporting”

Let’s not forget that;

Hotmail being one of the first webmail providers had a huge beneficial in being a first mover in this market. So since the beginning, they had very high numbers of subscribers. But how many dead accounts do they have? and let’s just be honest here, Google’s Gmail, now even offering free imap to everyone, is just the better product. More simple, more clean and technically more advanced.

Microsoft has it’s own operating system, google has not (yet). This gives them a great starting point for promoting their software/services. But Vista sucks and people will be switching to more “easy”/better products such as Apple’s Leopoard or Ubuntu. Vista being the first MS OS having terrible figures in terms of sold licenses cleary indicates that they are loosing power in their primary market. The iPhone has been a huge success and this will definately lead to more sales for their computer department as well. Microsofts OS market share will fall against Apple and Linux even more over the next years. Even Dell is selling Linux computers.

Did anyone take into consideration Google Apps? Google does not cummunicate how many customers they have so far, but I believe they make good money with it.

I’m sure Google has some surprises in petto, looking at their share price, they can buy some big companies (or a lot of small ones). And they are investing it in the best markets possible for the near future:

Mobile Phones (Android)
GSM licenses in the US and UK
Video portals (see youtube)

I am expecting some great product launches for 2008/2009 if they can can manage to keep up with their immense growth rate. Let’s hope the best for this unique company.

I think Google is more successful online overall, even if search is their only fully successful product.

The thing to remember is that Google has the web developers on their side. Developers for major websites are more likely to create Google Maps mashups. As the web develops, the companies with the most browser and mobile web enabled services are going to be the winners.

Microsoft is so successful because of continued growth in the Windows market and the enterprise market. But I hope their success wanes. I think web services companies more like Google make more efficient software that gives developers more opportunity for creativity. Microsoft would *never* consider anything as bold or as risky as Android.

And I prefer Google Docs to Office. When their interface improves, where is that going to leave Microsoft Office? Are enterprise customers going to remain loyal to Microsoft when the enterprise market moves towards more of a pure web services model?

although some of the examples you cited are really bad, I certainly understand that MS doesn’t lead in everything but search, maybe there is one or 2 more things.

What’s the MS answer to Google Docs? Honestly…who cares!

Google Docs is a geek-chic PR tool that spreads goodwill among techies. Sure startups and blogs might have a fun time with it, but the other 99.5% of the world uses Office.

I do agree that Ballmer is a freak, but I think that comparing everything-Google-does to everything-Microsoft-does doesn’t make sense.

What’s Google’s answer to XBox and the gaming division?

What’s Google’s answer to local operating systems?

It’s not a valid way to compare the two companies.

I love how the MSFT sticker is taped to the laptop. That’s the best way to do it while you Mac is being shipped.

He has absolutely no clue!!

MSFT needs a Jerry Yang…oh they have one, Billy G.

5tacos

Can anyone read this?
My comment won’t post :(

oh please, come on Duncan. Google docs looks like school project compared to MS office. What a lame comparison?
