A late reply. I’ve completely lost faith in Google. They churn out many half-baked products and never attempt to make them better. Gmail was hot, now Yahoo has much better UI and unlimited storage. Gdocs plain sucks.

BTW, Google’s stock is way overpriced!!

Ballmer is saying what he has to to cover his company. But the problem with Microsoft is that they have not been able to dominate the Internet as much as they should. You can say google’s tech is superior to MS. I would take google docs any day compared to Windows Live. But Ballmer is correct when he says they are not behind in terms of usage and revenue. Gmail has 50 million users compared to 228 million users for hotmail. I’m sure the revenue is similar ratio. Google is a giant but they are not as dominant as people like to think. Techies like to think Google is dominating because that is what they use. But the no so technical people use hotmail and yahoo mail because they have been around longer. If you look overseas, it is even worse for google because in many countries they are not even the dominant search engine.

I prefer google’s apps, but microsoft’s stock for the long term.

Duncan this a terrible piece of journalism, you’ve come across as a rabid google fanboy. Fact, google is better at search than microsoft, thats all! Microsoft do thousands of other things as well , name me one other mass market google product that beats microsoft? google, as balmer says , is a house of cards, with their growth and rapid take on of staff, its easy to agree with him, yes search is good ,yes the ad revenue is good , but that’s it , it has a good name at the moment ,flavour of the decade but the reality is that it has dubious privacy issues which may come to haunt it, and a growing staff count which does not equate to more sales ,history proves companies that grow this fast often grind to a halt purely as nobody is quite sure what the next guy is doing and who is in charge, as what happened to yahoo a few years ago.Google is a very good ‘media’ company that sells ads, microsoft is a software company. duncan please be objective.

You’ve measured Microsoft against Google’s strongest points, and found it lacking.

Measuring Google against Microsoft’s strongest points, and you’d find Google lacking.

For instance, you gloss over the the much, much better integration between personal pages and instant messaging that Microsoft has, because that observation doesn’t support the point that you had already decided on before you started to write this article.

I use just about every Google service, and just last week uninstalled my last MSN Messenger client. So I agree that for myself (and apparently you too), Google has the better mix of services.

But this article provided an inaccurate and unfair portrayal of the MS alernative.

Google Search engine technology has created a goodwill in the market. Every user type Google whenever he want to search online. Its hard for Microsoft to take the positioning in the market. But, recenly Google drop pagerank of many popular sites. Webmaster and bloggers were against the updation of Google pagerank. Any mistake ny Google in this situation can give advantage to microsoft and Yahoo!

Google is a company with creative and talented people, Microsoft is a company with even more creative and talented people and makes even more money than Google and shows no signs of slowing down.
All this anti Microsoft talk for the sake of talk is just so much crap, Like Google docs, it seems to be mentioned a lot but in the end has very little effect on what happens in the real world and most people don’t seem to care.

The Silicon Valley echo chamber specialists have worn out their welcome with the constant anti Microsoft spin.

Apart from Search and Advertising, Google really sucks.
Eric Schmidt likes to mention ‘Apps’ as part of Google’s Holy Trinity. But for now their Apps Suite doesn’t rock.

Google now operates like a Family Studio during their Public Showcases by making all of their future projects sound like ‘Coming Soon – Movie Trailers’.
‘OpenSocial’ or ‘Android’.
But the benefits of these ‘Future Presentations’ Trailers helps Google generate more hype for the Companies share price – and with that added incentive creates more cash to purchase future acquisitions.

The battle for web supremacy between Google and Microsoft will come from which Company can purchase the key strategic acquisitions that can supplement their own current strengths.
Recently Google has brought Jotspot and Feedburner, but what everyone is still waiting for is to see how both of them fit inside the Google online machine.

One jewel in the crown for online office docs that could become a tasty acquisition in the coming months for not only Google and Microsoft, but also Yahoo too, is Zoho.
If Yahoo has plans to become a serious Web 2.0 player then maybe they should also look at the idea of creating an Apps Suite for their Portal. ie Zoho.

Maybe if Microsoft are too defensive in taking all of their major Desktop Windows online, they might consider buying Zoho and using the Zoho brand with bits of Windows & Office Live as extras, for their future Online Office Suite.
Or maybe Google could purchase Zoho away from the other two and merge it within their Google Docs to create the hottest online Office Suite around.

Over the coming year both Google and Microsoft will be playing Pac-man with a large number of Web 2.0 Companies and gobbling up a wide range of important online applications.
Maybe this time next year, we can look at this again and see who really rules online.
But for now Google are ahead on points.

The point is, core business to core business, Google probably isn’t that far ahead of Microsoft. Search is one thing, but as the new natural language search engines, and data repository substantiate, it is a market that Google may dominate now, but it is a house built on cards, just like a majority of the web. As quickly as Google came into power, it can be taken away.

Regarding Kelli, who has to rely on personal insults because of their inability to put forward a cogent and thoughtful argument…my issue with Duncan’s reference to Docs is that it is superfluous. It is irrelevant from a business standpoint. When comparing the strength of one individual to another, would you take into consideration the strength of their eyelids?

Duncan’s argument is so flawed its painful, and to be honest, he is a little childish as well.

Well, no matter how good Google Docs will become, nobody will uploaad their all private documents to an Website while working on it. Can you think of a situation when a company is writing the design of a secret product to be lauched in open forum like Google doc? I would have it in my laptop no matter what the price of Office software is…

Also, a lot of talk about Microsoft copying Apple … isn’t Google docs looks pretty like Microsoft Office in look and feel ….
