if you are going to sell digg, you need to sell it to a savy technology company, such as google, not a media company, otherwise you will destroy digg, which is not a risk worth taking.

Relax everyone I'm quite sure that it's bs to begin with.

Also those who think that Digg is an independent are misinformed, Digg has large contracts with various major companies and they're in bed with some very big companies who provide donations (investments) and servers in exchange for PR (whether that PR is just that they can claim they help Digg).

Nonetheless Digg is very much in bed with several companies, and one needs only look at Tech TV to see how finely in-tuned Rose and TechTV are - cross-branding and promotion of tech tv content is just one such way (you'll need to disable adblock to see what I'm talking about).

wow I wish I saw this post earlier. Here's my 2 cents...

I think one of the most potent things could do for itself and for the web industry right now would be this:

Offer matching funds to any Digg member donating to a presidential candidate.

Why? This year may be the first time where the power of social media
gives a voice to the people by allowing many-to-many interaction.
Candidates whose constituency truly understand how to drive targeted messages virally may be able to leverage campaign investment much more effectively, enabling millions to be raised with little to no cost... and engaging web-savvy folks who ordinarily might not think to vote in their state primaries to do so.

If that happened, it would be political jujitsu - web-enabled.

It's likely to happen sooner or later.

Digg could amplify the voices of those of its users who care, and give them a little extra oomph - enough to make the difference.

An insurance policy could fund part of of a carefully-constructed matching-donations program.

What a way to make a difference!

How about techcrunch calling for Digg to enable this, before calling for Digg to sell out??

Zaid, keep telling yourself that. Television and internet markets are two entirely different types of users.

Television advertising works because you see the same commercial a thousand times and it's bombarded into your thought process when you come up on a product that you've seen so many times.

Internet ads are far different - they have to get you right on the spot, otherwise it's a wasted dollar.

why buy Digg for 400 million when you can buy a less trafficked aggregator and use resources to make it more trafficked then Digg? A media company can buy any of these for 5-20 million and make them popular with shear force!

I left Digg because of the hostility of the members as of late. Their new "friend" system was an afterthought and makes the site far too easy to spam. I move on to http://www.tagsum.com . The developers have some really innovative ideas, great features, and revenue share to actually reward solid submissions.

Mike - one thing I didn't get from you analysis is WHY you think people aren't buying Digg, aside from the price alone.

As you would know, there are many ways to structure a deal. It doesn't sound like the company is that highly coveted.
