I find the binary analysis (we win, they die) a very lazy argument. This industry is changing. At least one publication is changing with it.
And for what it is worth, gossip magazine sales are driven by long commute times, not hairdressers and doctors' surgeries. Everyone knows how old mags are in those locations so it is not as if they are snaffling up every copy and driving consumption :-)

I actually subscribe to PC World Australia and I have found the magazine to be very good over the last few years. The choices are now going to be very limited after its closure for local Australian IT mags.

This story is pretty misleading. Magazine advertising revenues are actually up this year vs. last. The publications that are suffering are many of the most established names, but as advertising spending fragments many more specialized and targeted publications are benefiting. I should know, since one of my non-tech ventures is a magazine, and we're seeing renewed interest in print from the luxury and lifestyle brands who are our advertisers. The key is integration and targeting.

It's really easy to be part of the TechCrunch readership and assume that everyone's priorities are quick fixes of breaking news, but there is still a very healthy market for other kinds of content. Tech news publications are a tiny, tiny blip on the radar for the average media planner.

Don't get me wrong, I agree that print is a difficult place to be for many reasons, and the dynamics are changing, but some basic research into what's actually happening in the print world would have helped this story.

The transition we're seeing is that information will be available in any format people prefer. For most of us here, that means the web. But, for those that prefer print, they will be able to get the same info with just a couple of days of delay. The medium is no longer the message.

Current models for magazine publishing may well go relatively quickly (in some subject areas), but new dynamic print technologies make it possible to get personalized and relevant information printed and sent within hours rather than months. New models are already appearing.

I'm constantly amazed at the number of times I see 'loosing' used in place of 'losing'. Furthermore this article reads, 'as OFF January'?! With no one apparently giving a damn about proper use of language is it any wonder no one wants to read it?

Of course print will die, in certain areas. Print is a way of communication. Mail, social networks, blogs are all new ways to communicate. With the change of those communication models, there is a need to adapt the old methods. Publishers should embrace new technology to produce better print communication, instead of sticking to the old models and complaining about the demise of print.

I think that while monthly and daily news publications are going to have a hard time, weeklys, say The Economist might thrive in the dying decades of print media. 4-6 weeks is an awfully long time, but one week (so reporting on news that might be up to say 10 days old) actually gives time for some sober reflection after the fact of some event, giving added value to the reportage (if it's well researched and written of course).

That said, I personally haven't once bought a copy since my father has been subscribed ... it comes with a free online subscription! Nonetheless, print will develop a nice, small niche in our world that will continue to be profitible for those small number of firms who excel at it for many years.

Print journalism can't compete with online in terms of speed, that's true. I may be biased (as I write for a IT magazine which still does quite well), but I think print journalism can survive (at least for the foreseeable future) with quality. That includes long, well structured stories, good writing, filtering the important things from the stream of news - things that are rare in online journalism. Many magazines and newspapers go the opposite way, but this is doomed to fail, I think.

Print will always have its place in society, publishers just have to learn to adapt.

Mainstream publications will begin to see a decline as the internet increases it dominance in the advertising sector, this will see a shift to more specialised content and niche market publications. I point to a great article written by Matt Handbury (a recognised thought leader in Australian press) addressing this specific issue.

The appeal of print is that it is a sit back and absorb medium ,the internet is still typically a lean forward and search medium. Consider this, say I am looking for information for Jimmy Hendrix on the internet, in most cases I will ignore anything I come across in my search that is not related to Jimmy (including banner ads). Where as with print I will buy Rolling Stone for the cover that states it contains a great article on Jimmy but will also be open to other articles I come across and, due to that mindset, be much more open to the advertising.

I agree that the problem for print is remaining relevant and up to date for the need-it-now society built around the internet, this is where publishers need to adapt and embrace new technologies.

We feel there is a role for the humble mobile, those always on always connected devices we all carry, to breath new life into this age old medium and appeal to a new generation.

Publishers who incorporate emerging technologies such as QR codes as an integral part of their readers experience will allow the written content to act as a starting point to more dynamic and upto date mobile internet content.

These technologies blur the lines between the real world and the internet allowing people to act on impluse anytime anywhere. Allowing the publisher to remaining relevant and current whilst at the same time increasing inventory and providing a compelling user experience.

Michael
I actually agree with most of that. I don't (nor do I suggest) that print will die tomorrow, but I do think that some print publications are more likely to die than others, and tech is the obvious candidate. As I said in the post: why buy a mag with 6-8 week old news?
