Flock 1.0 Released

Flock 1.0 (production version) is now available for download.
Some reports have suggested that many of the Flock tweaks to the underlying Firefox engine were designed specifically to provide a more stable browsing experience; in the couple of weeks I’ve been using it, Flock hasn’t crashed once, where as I had grown so sick of Firefox crashing I had switched to using Safari. If you’re having stability issues with Firefox it’s worth a look…the social networking features are good as well
See our Flock 1.0 review here, and a video demo of Flock 1.0 at TechCrunch40 here.

Congratz Flock. Interesting to see you have a bunch of some real loyal followers
I had been loving Flock for a long time
Could it be the FireFox Add-ons that were causing the problems.
If they were not used on Safari, that could be it.
Create a separate BARE BONES FireFox profile - and you will virtually NEVER have any problems

Firefox crashing?
I haven’t had Firefox crash ever since I started using it (over a year ago).
Nice to see flock flourishing, hope it will work fine in IE too.
I’ve been having serious speed issues with the Flock 1.0 beta, making it unusable.
Alex - Firefox on mac crashes multiple times per day.
flock is speeding i will catch firefox soon because they try to create a browser taht you will use for all your internet use in the easy way possible
no hard proof they’re using firefox’s underlying engine? lol.
wow.
This is good timing on Flock’s part.
Yeah, duncan, i think you mean something else in that second para.
i mean in the download number
clarified…but given it was in the context of tweak I’m not sure what was wrong Kelly. Of course they’re using FF under-neath, the para was about tweaking the underlying engine. Mostly they’ve just built on top of it.

both on windows and Mac FF 2 has been nothing short of a pain in the you know what for me. If you’re a light user you probably never see a thing, but if you’re a heavy tab user like me FF 2 is broken…some call it a “memory leak” which is in part true, but on a quad core Mac Pro with 4gb of ram with plenty of memory to spare it still constantly crashed for me (4-6 times a day when I was using it)…including a complete clean install with ZERO plugins. 1.5 never did this.
waaaaaaiiiit a minute! that paragraph has changed you sly dog
but it does more clearly reflect what i knew you were trying to say. just giving you a hard time…
in my rush to deride you, i did fail to mention that not only do i absolutely love flock’s integration with social networking sites, but also after installing my list of usual suspect extensions, it still uses 20mb less ram than firefox. filthy.
keep up the good work, flock team.
Firefox 2.x crashes for me every day and everytime I exit the firefox.
This particularly happens when i logout of meebo and then exit firefox, it crashes.
Fair enough! Two things set me apart from you - I use Windows and I don’t use a lot of addons.
Good to hear Flock is working out for you though, the more innovation, the better!
Congrats to the entire Flock crew!
Hmm it’s curious. I’ve been a FF user when I was in Windows and never had a problem. Yeah it crawled a bit when you opened many tabs, sometimes even freezing for a while.
Right now I use it under Linux and never had a problem. I’m using at least 8 add-ons including things like Greasemonkey and firebug and never had a problem. I’m also a very heavy tab user (30 or more tabs at some points), and never had a problem. Right now I’m running on Linux Debian with 2Gb of Ram.
I bet it’s a problem, either with an add-on or with the specific build for Mac (even though it’s weird you also experience it in Windows).
Opera (any version) crashes on Vista.. any clue about it? I am sticking to FF & Flock due to it. Anyone any clue. every time I start the systems crashes and I have to reboot my laptop again
!! This is pathetic though !!
Why don’t just you use Opera? Crashes never, surfs whatever!:)
I have problems with the FF memory leak. Has Flock addressed this issue at all?
i’ve personally ditched flock and gone back to a pure firefox installation on my mac. flock seems to have some very odd behaviour in relation to flash running on multiple tabs, and it causes the whole browser system to “pause” - for want of a better word - almost like the connection has timed out. it’s all in the browser though. so i didtched it and went back to FF. which doesn’t have that problem at all. for me, i’ll avoid flock till i get confirmation it’s stable beyond v1.0
Typing this from Flock. Pretty good and intuitive so far. Note: When I installed Quirk’s SearchStatus, without which I cannot browse, it didn’t work using the Mozilla version, but it installed just fine with the Firefox version.
When are you people gonna get it?
They are calling you stupid sheep! Flock, Flock?
Sheesh

One could argue that the FF team has a Little Bo Peep costume in the closet too “Mr. Ballmer”….
The new version is really nice. It’s a huge improvement from version .7 and later versions. We have a good review of the 1.0 release (with pics) here:

I am testing out the browser and I really like it. For some odd reason my Inside Facebook favicon uses TechCrunch’s TC.
I have been using flocks earlier version and currently on flock 1.0 beta version. So far its been a great experience, except the feeds which doesn’t get updated to at least the current date. I couldn’t figure out how to make it work automatically run, so that when i open the feeds, i have the latest ones.

I had also experienced the Firefox 2.x crashing problem a few months back. After installing on multiple machines, it seems to me that Firefox only had problems on machines with “dirty registries”. Not once have I had an issue with Firefox 2.x on a freshly installed Windows version. And I never had problems on Linux (Fedora/Unbuntu) or Mac.
Flock? Firefox? Opera? on a Mac?
What’s wrong with using Safari? Especially the new Safari 3 is much faster.
I agree that the Firefox crashes are probably attributable to add-ons. Aside from crashes, I’ve found that some add-ons will suddenly suck up 70-90% of my CPU cycles (as measured by Activity Manager on an OS X Mac), so that I can’t do anything else without shutting down Firefox first.
I like to try new add-ons, but I shut them down right away if I don’t consider them really beneficial.
I think the Firefox people need to put some quality control measures in place instead of blindly letting anyone submit an add-on for the general public.
I’ve been looking at Flock too, and am impressed so far. Mind you, it may be more stable than Firefox because it sacrifices so many Firefox features.
Camino on Mac seems to cure more of FF ills (even flash rendering, if that is possible) with fewer compatibility issues than Safari
Charles, name one firefox feature that is sacrificed in flock. To my knowledge flock does everything firefox does plus a whole lot more. And if you try to install extensions to get some of the same functionality they won’t be properly integrated or performance optimized. And there are no web clipboard, mediabar, or search flyout extensions, all of which flock has innovated. Flock has made my web browsing so much more efficient and enjoyable.
Ive been a loyal Flock fan since I saw it in PC Mag (or PC World, cant quite remember) a few months ago and I gave it a try.
I LOVE the silvery interface, and the fact that I can use most of my FireFox extensions.
When I got my invite to the beta (haha, they did send out invites to those who signed up, we got it before you!) I just HAD to download 1.0 and find out about those Facebook features.
I must say they are great, although Im a tad disappointed it never told me I needed to upgrade to the new version. Oh well, Im getting the final build now. No big deal.
Thanks for the tip. Have downloaded it and am giving it a test drive. So far so good!

Anyone who tried the beta 1.0 (and liked the features), should really try the regular 1.0. A LOT of effort went into stabilizing and the performance and stability of the yesterday’s release is excellent. The facebook sidebar alone is reason to switch, and yes, I am biased!
On little tweak I’d love to see come out in Firefox is: When you close the program with multiple tabs open a dialog box should appear asking if you want Firefox to reopen those tabs next time you launch the program. Because when I use FF I use many, many tabs… and when I want to shutdown the PC there are always tabs (usually articles) that I am not done with. So what I have to do is Ctrl/Alt/Del ==> pull up Task Manager (Windows XP) ==> End Program (FF). Then next time I launch FF it offers “Restore” option. The latest version if IE provides the option I mentioned… hats off to MSFT on that. I can’t believe they came out with this instead of copying it from one of the others. Something is wrong when they can roll out a handy feature faster than open source.
Weird, FF on the mac (2.0.0.9 as of today) rarely if ever crashes for me, either on my macbook or on the G5 and macbook pro in the office.
As for Flock I just don’t see how they’re going to drive serious adoption. There aren’t enough people in the real world who are power users of the various social networking activities it aggregates.
I remember their answer to the question at TC40 re. how they were going to make money. Their model seems to be the same as Firefox’s (revenue from Google for pushing Google search), but how big can that market really be? $75MM tops? And Mozilla already has $50MM of it.
I’ve always used firefox (on a windows PC with about 10 extensions) without any problems. But I’ve installed flock today and a few extensions to test it out. I really like it. The feed reader is very nice and I like the flickr integration too. We’ll see how it holds up with a good bit of use. I might be a permanent convert.
chrisco, you can use google sync for that. Choose just to sync your open tabs and you can safely close your FF and open it again later and get your tabs back
