Well, the advantages of this approach would really benefit lots of developers as they could retain their skills and create widgets easily and rapidly. I like the fact that Google is simplifying this for the developers.
But what about the users? Social networking overload is a huge problem.

Google should enable SocialStream use cases and simplify the whole experience.

I love that Google has initiated this but I hate that it hasn’t been run in the spirit of open source where anyone is willing to participate and contribute. Is this really any different to Facebook launching their proprietary API? Sure, we will now see some applications which run on multiple social networks but to the end user, is this going to significantly increase the available functionality?

We have to see how this plays out, but so far not very impressed. You can just as easily do this with Flash, like we do here on Ning: http://zooleo.ning.com/ Getting access to user accounts however. . . that is important, but it is not clear to me just how much access developers have or what users are giving up in terms of privacy for it.

I really wish this was an open source community effort, instead of Google. Nothing against them, but this needs to be in a more trusted source. This should be open and fair in my view, without a for profit company like Google picking and giving up a jump start to who they want to win, by giving ilike and others a several month headstart. I don’t think the open source community would have made that mistake. Still, there is still time for Google to let this go to a trusted non-profit. It would do so much better.
