Last night we outlined the details emerging about Google’s social networking initiative, OpenSocial. Below are some screenshots of OpenSocial in action that we didn’t have time to include in that post.

Most of these shots show the integration of iLike and Flixster applications with social networks on Ning. A few show the integration of applications with orkut and hi5. We’ve also included an overview document below.

Update: See Marc Andreessen’s screencast here.

There is some great interoperability here. Not complete but pretty good.
I wish I could leak something right now, but I will keep my ship sinking lips sealed for a little longer. :)

Good job Google, and the initial network sites!

This will facilitate the dev of apps and encourage more developpers to do so. Can’t wait to see a year from now the FB VS OpenSocial apps ratio. Watch out Mark and Bill!

This is an amazing development! Another excellent addition to open APIs!

    Man, someone REALLY likes AskANinja.

Took me a few minutes to see it, but once you get a clear picture of the integration it looks pretty sweet.

We have to see how this plays out, but so far not very impressed. You can just as easily do this with Flash, like we do here on Ning: http://zooleo.ning.com/ Getting access to user accounts however. . . that is important, but it is not clear to me just how much access developers have or what users are giving up in terms of privacy for it.

I really wish this was an open source community effort, instead of Google. Nothing against them, but this needs to be in a more trusted source. This should be open and fair in my view, without a for profit company like Google picking and giving up a jump start to who they want to win, by giving ilike and others a several month headstart. I don’t think the open source community would have made that mistake. Still, there is still time for Google to let this go to a trusted non-profit. It would do so much better.

It’s like UWA Netvibes API but applicated to social networks.

  7. what?

Based on these examples, seems like anti-$15B (facebook) camps (SNs/GOOG) are just making some noise!

Of course this is a great idea… I just wonder how much of this is hype at this stage. I haven’t seen anything earth shattering… yet… but google tends to get incrementally better.

I love that Google has initiated this but I hate that it hasn’t been run in the spirit of open source where anyone is willing to participate and contribute. Is this really any different to Facebook launching their proprietary API? Sure, we will now see some applications which run on multiple social networks but to the end user, is this going to significantly increase the available functionality?

Ah, finally the world gets a peak at Orkut!

Looks confusing to me, and you know me!

This is a great idea…the strength of google has always been as an aggregation layer over the worlds information….so be it for the social networks.

I like the fact that Google is simplifying this for the developers.
But what about the users? Social networking overload is a huge problem.

Google should enable SocialStream use cases and simplify the whole experience.
