All good points, realistically “Tom” is merely a character for branding on myspace. He is the average guy that works to market the social network. His real age is irrelevant, just as the reality that he isn’t the one sending you messages from his profile.

It is interesting that this is such a point of contention, I agree with sodapop and the others; age on myspace is irrelevant.

Another short story about ages and dates: I’ve tried to post on some video sharing site (I don’remember which, unfortunately) the first movie ever shot, in France, year 1895, by the Lumiere bros.

In the USA, the value of Truth still seems rather low. What an unhealthy society where the founder of a multi hundreds-of-millions of dollar company blatnatly lies in public and most people don’t care.

That place only happens when people are scared and they value money over all else. This is a person revered because he’s taken a bunch of money from others. So sick.

It’s gotten to the point where almost everyone in power lies now, at least in the USA. It is common, accepted, almost expected. It has started from the top, from CEOs, the president, clergy, creationist teachers, all over.

Definitely ironic. Of course, further irony exists in the fact that the site is an LA-based venture… does anyone tell the truth about their age (or anything, for that matter) in LA? Maybe they’ll lie about their traffic next. Then they might sue the users who stop using Myspace.

Had I ever advertised on Myspace, I’d probably go back for a refund on the principle that their demographics are all lies… if the founder isn’t honest on his profile, please try to convince me that his legion of followers don’t find reporting one’s age correctly as trivial as he did.

If nothing else, this meme proves that blogs possess a huge influence over the more ‘traditional’ sources of info. Congrats Mike, I think your experiment to see if you could get these sites (CNET, Newsweek) to embrace a worthless story has been a complete success. Sadly, it’s this victory that we should all be worried about, not that some guy named Tom is older than he stated in his profile. Your influence in this world may be fleeting, so why not use it to draw out that which matters, not that which banal beyond belief?

I don’t understand why it matters that his age is incorrect on his profile. Who cares? 40% of people probably display incorrect age on their profiles. Maybe we should get started after all those women that lie about their age in RL.

It’s not like he and his company adjusted earnings or other financial or statistical numbers. That is worthy news.
