Zooomr Goes Japanese
by Duncan Riley on October 28, 2007

Zooomr has taken its social photo sharing site offshore with the launch of a mobile Japanese language version.Japan has long been a mobile crazy nation, and today they lead the world in mobile focused apps. The Japanese mobile version of Zooomr will be available to over 50 million potential users over 3 carriers.

In related Zooomr news, the site famously founded by the then 18 year old Kristopher Tate will launch a full API next week. As part of the launch they will also introduce InfoTags and InfoWidgets, mobile geared products that will provide an extra user functionality. Zooomr will also launch new localization features with the API release.

  • Thanks for posting on this Duncan — We’ve also hired a Japanese Team and have a new Japanese CEO, Hiroshi Asaeda.

  • Are they going to have to disable the API when they run out of disk space again?

  • What ever happened to the old zooomr colors and interface, black and green… it was so much nicer…

  • >Tate will launch a full API next week.
Too late. I already finished my projects using Flickr’s. Would have loved to use Zooomr but 1. they never responded to the various comments I left asking about the API and 2. given how it long it took them and how many times the web site has been down, I seriously doubt how reliable Zooomr will be. Goodbye Zooomr.

  • I would hope that with all the expansion, they finally have enough “manpower” and get their act together to re-introduce all those features that were gone with the last update, along with necessities like password recover and various other things that just don’t work right now. :)

  • This is a complete departure from the promises made before and during the Mark III launch, but then the people that stood by Zooomr from the start already know that.

As for the promises about the API and other promises made now, I have a hard time trusting them. I’ve believed in Zooomr promises in the past, and was disappointed.

We’ll see what the future holds. I hope (for their sake) that they find a market for their product in Japan.

  • The zoomr logo looks a lot like the old master card logo.

  • Zoomr is merely reinventing the wheel. I don’t know why they get as much “press” as they do. Just use Flickr which already does everything that Zoomr is trying to do…and does it better. Why settle for a Hundai (i.e., Zoomr) when you can just as easily have a Ferrari (namely, Flickr).

I’ve used Flickr, Smugmug and Zoomr. Flickr leaves the others in the dust.

  • Great intro video!. Have had a number of people point out this post to me here in Japan.

Great work Kristopher! Hope to get the chance to meet you soon! (Perhaps at Web 2.0 next month in Tokyo?)

  • The people at Yahoo in America really need to stop fighting with the guys at the Yahoo Japan office and just launch the Japanese translation with Flickr. If they take too long, Zooomr, and Japanese copy cats that will come along, might end up taking all of Flickr’s potential Japanese market.

  • Oh and I want to add that I think the mobile move on Zooomr’s part is brilliant. Your development pace is amazing, too!
