Flickr To Add Online Photo Editing Tools Via Picnik

flickrnik.pngFotoflexer may be my personal favorite among the many online photo editing tools, but Flickr has chosen Seattle-based Picnik to handle the long requested photo editing feature for Flickr users.

Currently, you can rotate photos on Flickr, but the editing stops there. When the new tools launch, users will be able to edit photos more extensively using the Picnik Flash based tools (see our review here).

The deal has been signed and implementation will occur sometime in the next few months, Flickr told me yesterday. Users will be presented with an edit option on the photo page. Clicking it takes the user to a new Flickr photo edit page, with the Picnik tools integrated via an iframe. After editing, users can add the edited photo to their Flickr account or, if they are a Flickr pro user, overwrite the original.

Business terms around the deal are not being disclosed at this time. Picnik is self funded to date.

  2. Michael Arrington

    curious:

    1) why can’t they develop this in house with the plethora of Yahoo engineers?

    2) why won’t they just buy picnic?

alaska - many times integration is first step to acquisition

FYI, I made some changes to paragraph three around how integration of the products will occur. Trying to get a concept screen shot of how it will look as well.

For me, martest move by flickr since I got the Pro account last year. Seems like Flickr is serious about their future innovations. I hope Video upload comes soon.

Yet another smart move for Flickr. Definitely the jewel of the Y! necklace.

Picnik is just plain outstanding… Great move by Flickr.

en… picnik’s functionality is kinda limited compared to fotoflexer, wonder why would flickr choose picnik

  14. Eric Fredericks

Flickr is getting better and better every day. Hope this happens very soon, it will save me a lot of time instead of editing photos with GIMP then uploading.

    Finally…

Wow, this is awesome news. Congrats to the Picnik guys, I love their service and it’s a great example of what Flex can do.

And by the way they have a great plugin for FireFox which already enables the integration in Flickr. Here you can have a look at the result

I guess no one read or watched the Picnik demo video http://www.jeffro2pt0.com/video-demo-of-picnic/

It’s about time they did something like that… I usually use desktop editing software but picnik is pretty cool, there is a review at http://www.thetechbrief.com/20.....ck-picnik/

I really like Picnik, but with one major caveat: if I use it for more than a few minutes, it starts slowing down my computer, eventually making it unusable.

This has happened on more than one computer — it’s a real problem.

Has anyone else experienced this? Have any suggestions for how to prevent it?

  22. Orli Yakuel

Nice. I think Picnik will be a great addition to Flickr.

    FYI,
    Picnik Firefox add-one:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4889
Placing an edit button on top on every Flickr picture, but when you click on it, it’s take you to a Picnik page (where you can edit your Flickr pic). I guess the integration will be the same, but the editing will be from Flickr page itself. (powered by Picnik of course)

Agreed. It’s a very nice move for Yahoo!

Congrats to Jonathan and crew for some of the slickest UI around. FB app integration is very smooth as well.

    Bruce,

Sorry to hear that you’re having problems. We’d like to know more about the problems that you’re seeing with Picnik. Can you send us feedback from within Picnik? Select feedback from the Picnik help menu. This will help us get a better idea of your OS/Browser, etc. If could also let us know how much RAM you have that would be helpful too.

Picnik, Hmm I shall keep a close eye on it so maybe you will see something about this on http://www.WhichWebsite.com we regularly post website related news and reviews on websites daily.

We have an interview with the Picnik crew here:

    @Alaska Miller

“1) why can’t they develop this in house with the plethora of Yahoo engineers?”

Flickr is bought by Y!, but that doesn’t mean they now share offices, run around in purple Y! shirts etc. They’re pretty much still doing what they were always doing. It’s still quite autonomous company, yet sailing under the Y! flag.

“2) why won’t they just buy picnic?”

Again, Flickr is not Yahoo!. Y! Would have to buy picnic. Seems like they don’t want to.

  30. thekaran

I’m sure yahoo will end up paying lot more to PicniK in an year or so.

  31. Simon

Seems like they are a bit behind. Image editing tools in flash? Why not create a ajax / canvas implementation. It would be a much better use of the tools!

CMS systems are integrating these tools as standard soon, like Silverstripe. I wonder what took them so long.
