Exclusive: AdMob Snares Google’s Kevin Scott
by Duncan Riley on October 16, 2007

kevin-scott.jpgMobile advertising firm AdMob will today welcome former engineering manager at Google Kevin Scott to its executive team. Scott will be responsible for software engineering and operations as AdMob builds its infrastructure to enable billions of targeted mobile banner and text ads.

Scott was Senior Engineering Manager for Google, where he led Google’s advertising quality engineering efforts focused on improving the relevance of ads to users and increasing ROI for advertisers. Scott’s time at Google also included M&A work for two successful acquisitions, establishment of the annual Google Faculty summit, and creation of a number of leadership development and engineering education programs.

Omar Hamoui, Founder and CEO of AdMob told TechCrunch that they are thrilled to have someone with Scott’s experience join their startup. “Kevin brings unparalleled experience building ad servers that maximize targeting and quality. Adding Kevin validates and empowers AdMob’s approach and leadership on the challenges of targeting and optimization for the mobile environment.”

AdMob is currently in the process of introducing new mobile advertising capabilities around mobile-specific targeting and relevance. We first wrote about AdMob in August where we noted that AdMob had seemingly slipped under the radar in terms of attention whilst competitors have been acquired. Admob currently serves over 1 billion mobile ads a month.

  • This is interesting… in view of google lauching it adsenes of mobile few days back…

  • Don’t get it –> Kevin has been listed on Admobs About page for ages. I remember seeing him there back in August.

How is this an exclusive ?

  • Fake "Fake Michael Arrington" - October 16th, 2007 at 4:09 am PDT

Thanks for wasting my time with this “exclusive story”.

  • 2#
as far as we’ve been told this is new today, indeed I’ve known about it for 2 weeks with a request to embargo it until now.

  • #2 (WTF)
I’ve just checked with Admob, it’s only just gone up on the site now: basically you’e full of you know what :-)

  • Wow, with Google stock soaring, this is interesting.

  • So a good number of people are leaving Google.Last week some guys left for Facebook. But Google being Google will always recruit great replacements for all these guys.

  • So a good number of people are leaving Google.Last week some guys left and joined Facebook. But Google being Google will always recruit great replacements for all these guys.

  • Chaz Chung (6). Some blogger actually pointed out that as Google stock soars, most these guys think that it is the best time to leave Google because they go out with huge $$$

  • @WTF – Hilarious. I can only imagine the look on Duncan’s face when he thought that his exclusive was a dud. Thanks for brightening my day.

  • Duncan –> If only I had a camera :D :D

  • Can Kevin bring a big change. Hope so , but it wont have a big impact on Google at this point of time. This shows that the market is getting more matured on this subject.

  • Despite that all geekers knew that long before every body, it’s feels strange back there ( France ) to see all these senior guys leaving Google. Looks like the rats leaving the boat…

What is new that makes them leave today ? Is it just about the GOOG price or what ?

Or maybe it just means that the price doesn’t have any meaning right now and google is intalled like would a state building be. And that there’s no creation possible right now inside. (i’m not sure to be clear..)

  • @Kevin Scott

No more free laundry for you!
I bet you don’t feel so smart any more.

  • “So a good number of people are leaving Google.Last week some guys left and joined Facebook. But Google being Google will always recruit great replacements for all these guys.”

Google can come up to our office in Quebec if it wants to view our new search. I think they’d crap their pants. I invite you Google. We’re not paying for your flight though, and you have to sign an NDA and NCSA(non-cloning/supersetting agreement)

  • Chris R. (16). Are you serious? Can you share the link to your new search. I am curious.

  • Chris R. (16). Are you serious? Why should Google travel all the way to Quebec? A link to your search is enough for them and everyone to compare its results with other search engines.

  • I hate how with Adsense for Mobile you have to enable allow_url_fopen and allow_url_include in the PHP server configuration. I dont get why they made it that way

  • Good point Clement, on the stock price aspect.

  • I am more interested in knowing what AdMob has to provide for publishers.

so i don’t get it…why would Dr. Doolittle be a good fit with Admob’s business? Doesn’t he cure animals?

  • “Chris R. (16). Are you serious? Why should Google travel all the way to Quebec? A link to your search is enough for them and everyone to compare its results with other search engines.”

True dat, but I can’t make it live yet. The keyword sales interface is not done. And without selling keywords what good is a search engine? We’re not going to give people search results for FREE after all?? No revenue == dumb fscuk.

BTW, LAX to Montreal is like 7-8 hours. It’s not a long way. Montreal to freaking Paris is just over 6 with the jet stream. Air travel can do wonders for travel time.

  • i am calling your bluff beercosoft Chris.

Pick me up from the airport at 7pm. Look for the guy in the clown suit with extra diapers on.

  • “i am calling your bluff beercosoft Chris.”

I’m not bluffing, this isn’t an “idea”. The code and the gauntlet has been laid down into silicon.
If you are indeed from Google, email me from @google.com, and let me know when to head down to Montreal. I’m in Quebec City and will have to drive you up here from the airport. I’ll have to leave at 4 if you come up for 7.

If you email, get the flight # and the gate and I will respond with my cell # so I can get a hold of you once you get here.

  • FYI, QC has an airport, but flights here are twice as expensive as Montreal, because the airport fees are out of control. That’s why nobody uses it. I really don’t mind driving down to pick you up(everybody does that here). I await the info.

  • 1 Billion impressions per month sounds impressive until you crunch the numbers…. The bottom bid is .05CPM– which i’m guessing they aren’t getting much more than that (if even that).

    (whips out calculator)

    1,000,000,000/1,000=1,000,000 ( x .05)= $50,000/month..

Now then they have to pay their publishers=$25,000 gross (not including operating costs)

I hope this guy from Google isn’t expecting massages or any of that other silliness he’s probably used to.

“Oh I don’t need an office chair, I use a pilates ball”–Google Employee

(Yes, I am jealous of Google employees somewhat.)

  • Full disclosure, I am VP Marketing @ AdMob.

I wanted to reply to Misanthropy Today and clarify AdMob’s pricing.

AdMob has two pricing models CPM and CPC. The bidded marketplace on http://www.admob.com is for CPC ads only today. We establish a bidding floor for many markets of $0.05 per click. In most cases the actual cost per click paid is considerably more than that. I just checked and US inventory was clearing between $0.15 and $0.37 yesterday.

We serve CPM Banners as well. Our rate card ranges from $12 CPM for run of site to above $30 CPM. In the last month, we have served ads for Ford, Cadillac, Progressive, MTV, Comedy Central, CBS and many others.

We work to be transparent with our data. We’ve recently posted some data on our traffic and devices in our marketplace here: http://www.admob.com/metrics.

This is a free resource. We want discussions about mobile advertising to be grounded in real #s.

    Thanks. Jason

  • my mistake, thanks for correcting it.
