I know this is sort of a dead issue but I was totally stunned when I literally stumbled across this event involving Figueroa. I know this character. I also know Beth Boldt very well. I am assuming that she knows nothing of this event and if she did she protested his actions. This is damaging to her career. She is a kind hearted generous woman who would never do this. I am sure she never called to demand money. I can only imagine what your experience with Richard was like.

As a TechCrunch advertiser and event sponsor, I am deeply appreciative of the speed and openness with which Mike and Heather handled a very threatening third party. It is inevitable that some people will look back and pass judgment on communication techniques and specific things that were written. To me, this has been an excellent example of the power of the medium when managed by conscientious and responsible editors. I do believe that all sides of the argument were presented and the conflict ran its course at Internet speed. Many thanks, also, to those who participated in the conversation.

I really, REALLY hope that his reason for falling all over himself apologizing is that he realizes what he's done (tried faking litigation and in the process opened himself up for a REAL lawsuit), and that he's a complete idiot, and that he should stick to taking pictures and leave the internetting and fake-lawyering to people in places other than Alabama.

Well Mike, I completely agree with the fact that Richard was at wrong in bothering you or your advertisers by his ignorance.. But when you ever get time to retrospect yourself in your life, read your own posts about the issue and you won't miss the sarcasm and despise in your postings

I think it's time to sue him for all this harrassment and abuse. He obviously was making unwarranted threats and if this was done in a face-to-face manner, he would be serving time in jail.

Well it's true, he did apologize. To forgive is Divine, as they say.

One thing is for sure, he'll NEVER pull this kind of stunt again -- with ANY website. If he'd have done this to some hobby-blogger he could have really ended up ruining someone's life...

"Wrong bee's nest" is right.

I've done some more research on Richard and there is actually a documentary about his life. Check out this link...

http://www.trailerfan.com/movie/iceman/posters

and here is the synopsis. The movie is called Iceman.

HE'S 40,000 YEARS OLD. Deep within an Arctic glacier they found him, preserved by a miracle of nature, brought back to life by a miracle of science. Now medical science wants to exploit him in the name of research. One man wants to stop them...in the name of humanity. But he'll need more than a miracle to survive...he'll need a friend.

"And I admit that I did not understand the way the Internet works and still don’t."

This is unfortunate and sad. I would be happy to help Richard understand what the Internet is.

Before we meet, Richard, please do the Chap. 1 reading before the class.

Understanding the Internet - by Al Gore and Ted Stevens
Chapter 1 - The Internet is a series of tubes.

To: no. 46

So in effect what you are saying is that "Dick" wasn't wrong?! Really!
He made a very public attempt to extort $ from (I don't have the correct # but) many people.
What HE should've done was HIRE a lawyer and ask him if he had a blade of grass to stand on in this case. If his lawyer had half a brain he would have laughed Ricardo out of his office.

Richard has every right to start a blog himself and slam Mike all he wants to. FREE COUNTRY...

So seriously if this guy Richard is such a photographer, why the hell is he in Alabama? Oh wait, that IS the fashion capital of the world. Or maybe they won't let him into NYC because 1. He can't spell 2. He has no common sense and 3. Frigtard doesn't know what a beehive is.

He is a disgrace to the south. I hear Mississippi is looking for some idiots.

Richard- Your photography is lame, unimaginative and you're lucky that you're not being sued.

Can we start a collection -- a buck a-piece ought to do it -- to buy this guy an hour or two of private tutoring. English tutoring. The written kind. Not only is the grammar and spelling rather dreadful, but the punctuation/spacing thing...I don't even have a name for it. It's Dicky-boy's habit of ending a sentence with a period (fair enough) but not bothering with a space before he commences the next sentence. Surely this could be rectified very easily by one of those old-school English tutors, perhaps with a cane in order to give Richard an encouraging tweak from time to time. I'll start the collection with a $50 donation to get the ball rolling.

It’s Dicky-boy’s habit of ending a sentence with a period (fair enough) but not bothering with a space before he commences the next sentence. Surely this could be rectified very easily by one of those old-school English tutors, perhaps with a cane in order to give Richard an encouraging tweak from time to time. I’ll start the collection with a $50 donation to get the ball rolling.

Shorter Version:

Dear Michael,

I talked to a lawyer. He called me worse names than your readers. Please don't sue me.

Love,

This is a great ending! Jerks like Figaroa don't apologize cos they are a "big" man. He just realized he was messing with the wrong crowd. I bet he sends those stupid emails to a bunch of innocent site owners who don't know the tech details and tries to extort money from them and probably with some success.

I hope Figaroa bumps his head into a bee's nest!
