AniBoom Gets Its Own Channel on Joost
by Erick Schonfeld on October 10, 2007

picture-220.pngIsraeli-startup AniBoom just went live with an animation channel on Joost to launch, the peer-to-peer Internet TV service. AniBoom is an animation site with 30,000 videos, contributed from about 3,000 animators around the world. AniBoom, which competes with MyToons, currently splits advertising revenues with animators who contribute to the site, and holds an annual $50,000 contest to attract the best animations. Now the best of those will be featured on the Joost channel as well (with ad revenues being split three ways amongst AniBoom, Joost, and the animators).

Here’s an oddly disturbing, yet captivating, AniBoom short called Bendito Machine:

  • i embedded the coolest cartoon ever from aniboom in our first post on them -

  • Why can’t any of this material be in high def?
We already have toon channels in high def on digital cable.
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/.....D_DVD.html

Digital high def camcorders are about $600 now adays. Why don’t we have a place to upload them in high def? That’s the NEW 10 billion dollar question.
I want a new codec to compress my toons in high def, and I want a service with a HUGE telecom line to broadcast them through my computer, to my high def TV in high def. With absolutely no revenue model or advertising allowed. Sili valley, get the wallets out! This is the most senseless idea of all. Make it happen as usual.

  • arrington, your clip is sexier than erick’s

nm, I guess it’s coming anyway. I’ll stick to digital cable for toons for now. Videotron has at least 5 toon channels that I know of. Joost won’t support high def, so screw them. They don’t even support linux.

  • i love how aniboom splits the advertising revenues with the animators. very cool concept.

  • excellent post. aniboom is a great website. lookout mytoons.

  • Animation is cool!
Have you guys heard about me being on the Simpsons next season.

    http://fakesteveballmer.blogsp.....chive.html

    Simsons ‘08 introduces a new neighbor, his name;
    “Fake Steve Ballman”.
I wonder where thay got the inspiration?

  • I actually like Mytoons better. The site is much better looking and easier to navigate. Also, the animation is far better on Mytoons than Aniboom and the social networking aspect is awesome! Who will win??

  • That’s funny, because I thought the two were pretty different…? Isn’t aniboom striving to be more of a production house and mytoons going more the social networking route?

  • also - @ Chris - isn’t that a bandwidth issue? i mean, until bandwidth prices drop or some other compromise surfaces, won’t price always create a barrier between hi-def and online streaming??

though - i’m totally with you…i’d love to see some of these things streamed onto my big screen in crisp rez… le sigh….=)

  • same here, mytoons is 100 times better.

  • Mytoons adds a flavor of social networking, then how come aniboom and mytoons are competing.

  • I discovered this guys a while back as i was doing some research on web based video distribution. I saw the animations as well. It is fantastic, albeit disturbing.

  • Mytoons has no users , compare it to aniboom on alexa….

  • I can’t understand what people find in anime movies? Chinese boys and girls with large blue eyes and wide mouths :)

  • Ouch Aniboomer!

Gads…why can’t we all just get along?!?

…man, that does not leave a good taste in my mouth on behalf of the aniboom community….

(but i won’t hold it against the rest of you!)

  • @ Amusea -

    Japan = Inherently Awesome.

There is just no getting around it. ;)

  • @ Aniboomer - For some reason I just saw the Alexa part of your comment…doesn’t alexa favor ie? i thought there was some sort of glitch where it didn’t measure firefox stats accurately…am i crazy?

  • Hi Everyone,

I thought I might put an official word in here from MyToons.

First about Me: I’m Paul Ford, Chairman, President and Co-Founder of MyToons. I’m a technologist, and ardent marketeer, and a HUGE animation fan.

MyToons is a fun place for animators and fans to hang out, watch the best animation in the world, and get to know each other. We have worked with animators and studios from all over the world over the world for about the last 20 years or so, and we are pretty in tune with what they like and don’t like, what turns them on, and what they simply don’t like. The content on MyToons is never juried. We’re a bit like You Tube in that people can upload anything they want, and the best will rise to the top. It’s really the power of community at work. We DO have one special section on the MyToons homepage, though, called MyToons Loves. This is where anyone, no matter what their rating, can rise to the top and be featured on our homepage for all to see. This is the place where we put OUR favs! We are totally committed to the concepts of Web 2.0, and to our community.

I think that our focus is a bit different from our friends at Aniboom. First of all, we had a chance to meet the peeps at Aniboom a few weeks ago in Ottawa – at the Ottawa International Animation Festival. They are really cool people, and it was a pleasure finally meeting them.

I really can’t speak for them, but Aniboom’s focus seems more to act as a digital production house/intermediary. That’s very cool indeed. They seem to be there to help out animators, and hopefully find the next big thing and get it into wide, mainstream production. Having worked with every major studio on the planet, I can tell you that that is not an easy task. If you’ve ever had your killer idea rejected at a studio pitch meeting, you’ll know what I mean. Props to Aniboom for helping animators get what they deserve for their hard work!

In conclusion, please don’t bash one company or the other. We are different people doing different things. Both Aniboom AND MyToons have a real purpose and a real place in this beautiful wide animated world. Props to all of you, Aniboom!

    Best Regards
    Paul Ford

  • WOW!!!! Very well put Paul. You are a very classy guy. Stay classy Mytoons.

  • myToons looks good, but recently I saw this:
    http://www.cartoonmonkey.com/?p=628
