Why does every one say this is such a great move by SAP. I believe this is a great move from Business Objects. Clearly even the biggest BI vendors are starting to feel the heat. Oracle has a extensive BI stack to match its ERP, Microsoft has invested heavily for BI to match its ERP. How many other big players were on the market to buy Business Objects. Alternatively more growth wasn't really an option. BO was covering all the possible angles busines intelligence has, what more could they have done. No, I'm quite sure they've done a great job in making sure SAP bought them. And they keep their independence from what I hear !! Future assured !

It is obviously a smart move by SAP, they had to make moves to fill the BI void there.

Pricing will be an interesting issue once the dust has settled. There are a couple of smaller BI firms out there who can easily compete with Business Objects in terms of functionality and ease of use.

Business Objects is not yet a web2.0 company. But it has made serveral intersting acquisitions in the past. For example it acquired a company called Inxight which developed product for text analysis. In this content dominated internet age, information overload is a burden for decision makers. Text analysis and web2.0 - I think these two terms sound some what related. doesn't it?

Here's my analysis of the deal:
http://sramanamitra.com/2007/10/08/european-software-consolidation/
BI has been a hole in SAP’s portfolio. It’s good that they are plugging it, and at the same time starting to acquire larger companies. The organic strategy won’t go very far anymore. Too late in the game.

BusinessObjects was probably one of the first enterprise 2.0 software company: in 2001, WebIntelligence 6 was already using async iFrames (AJAX precursor), javascript and XML-RPC over HTTP (before the "Web service" buzzword was coined) with a very rich DHTML GUI.
Of course, from a "social web" point of view, they are still trying to catch the train, like many big enterprise software companies.
For a true enterprise 2.0 french company, I would have a look at BlueKiwi instead.

I worked recently at a self storage facility with little web presence other than a very web 1.0 website. For all sakes and purposes, it wasn't tech-focused or "with it" at all yet all of the facility's computer reports were designed and generated by Crystal Decisions business intelligence reporting software. The company didn't invest in a lot of expensive software but Crystal Decisions and BackupMyPC from Veritas were two pieces of commercial software we couldn't have lived without. Crystal Decisions is, of course, based in my home province of B.C. and one of the province's largest tech-focused employers and owned by Business Objects.

Kudos to SAP for making a smart, strategic play against its aggressive rival Oracle. I'd like to see the enterprise content management space heat up next, with Canada's Open Text possibly going to SAP, Oracle or even EMC.

Cheers,
Doug

I feel; SAP is loosing it completely guys.

If you remember, SAP only a few months before acquired OutlookSoft and now BO. I feel SAP would have thought, just OutlookSoft is not enough to beat the competition they are facing from Oracle. I only hope, customers doesnt face the axe by multiple offering of products by SAP all catering to the same segment

Its very smart move from SAP since Business Objects is leading Business Intelligence Software in very short span of time and SAP made good Strategy taking over Business Objects.
Recently Business Object has come up with latest BI- Tools like BO-Labs,BI Annotator.

I think this is a great move by SAP.

If you see Oracle acquired hyperion to strengthen their BI side. So, SAP has done something far better than what Oracle cant even dream about. Currently Business Objects is one of the fastest growing firms in Business Intelligence side leaving Cognos quite behind in the league.

Why people are making so much fuss about web 2.0 ?
WHY the hell would some business or corporate house want their COMPANY data exposed online ?

Online Business Collabration ?

A corporate house buys SAP ERP for ard. some million dollar and runs smoothly their day to day corporate transaction under HIGHLY SECURE intranet.

Did u see the words - INTRANET & SECURE !

Why would any big company in right mind would go to WEB 2.0 and add online feature, just for their lazy officer who would rather sit on his couch at home with laptop watching superbowl ?

I think this is not good move by SAP.
Have Germans once again running after DOT COM mania ?
