Jihad On You is a new satirical website that allows users to vent their everyday frustrations by issuing a “jihad” against the things that annoy them.
When users declare a jihad, the “infidel” can be notified that a holy war has been declared against them. The site also allows readers to comment on jihads and rate them.
The site was built as part of a challenge to build a website over one weekend, and the entire process can be read about on Hibernation9.com.
It’s a well designed site that is pleasing to look at, but the taste has much to be desired. I’ve always considered myself to have a broad sense of humor, but this is just a step too far. There is a jihad against the London Transport System; I wonder how the victims of the London Bombings will feel about those horrid events now being part of someone’s trying to be funny website; Jihads are not a funny business by any stretch of the imagination. I suppose some will like the site, for others it’s just downright offensive.

Couldn’t resist.

Oh no, please understand the meaning of jihad and it’s history. This is the last thing we need at a time when ignorance is so high (for Muslims & non-Muslims alike).
i declare jihad on their font sizes
I can laugh at comment 1 + 3, but I still find the overall concept offensive
I would say, if anything, it’s long, long overdue. Any culture, religion, movement, or person that uses the threat of violence as a means to squelch criticism deserves the exact opposite. In fact, it needs criticism, to the point where threatening individuals (Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Salman Rushdie, Arifur Rahman, etc.) becomes impractical due to the sheer volume of ‘infidels’.
That’s it for me, I need to get over there and declare jihad on thin skin.
Morgan I believe what you are referring to is a Fatwa, which is different to Jihad. Just thought I would point that out to avoid confusion.
Yes, you’re correct, I’m referring more to the general direction than the specific use of ‘jihad’. Still, 100% correct.
Great idea though, MyFatwa.com
I also couldn’t resist…..

Brian
lol.
hey..what was the reason..that TechCrunch discussed this cheap site here?
It is quite offensive.I’m not muslim, but for this type of sites OUR NET IS BECOMING STUPID……
brian: lol, totally agreed
http://alisaleo...pp-of-week.html
dead_spokesperson is right..these type of sites leads to frustration,anger,crime,etc..
I dont think everybody will find it funny .. but I guess they were trying to be controversial ..
I think TechCrunch should not review these type of sites.
So much for a word that simply means “struggle”.
This has more functionality than the recent company I left, who had £2.5M in funding!
@Chad: Jihad on their font sizes? Why? Because they don’t use insanely small text like so many sites?
Example: Facebook and their 11px type. On my machine’s 133 pixel-per-inch display, that equates to six point type. Ever seen a book or magazine set in six point type? I didn’t think so.
Web designers need to step away from their low density 24″ WUXGA displays (only 94 pixels per inch) and see what their sites look like to those of us who use high density displays.
Of course, I fix it with Firefox’s minimum font size override, but how many people know how to do that?
Hmm… Now that I look around a bit more, maybe you were talking about the headline type – now that is quite excessive. But kudos for their readable body font.
Doesn’t make up for the horrible stinker of a site concept, of course! Stupid, stupid, stupid…
Oh! I just turned off my font size override. I never realized that TechCrunch also uses 11px type! Just as bad as Facebook. Mike and crew, you really need to see what your site looks like on my machine. It is *not* a site for sore eyes.
Back to the font override. Too bad only one person in a million knows this trick…
Stupid idea. These guys are just asking for problems. When the cartoon depicting Allah was shown in the Danish newspaper, the Muslims wanted to kill the cartoonist. I think these guys are trying to get the same rise.
I’m not Muslim but I would be offended if I was.
This can’t be serious.

Duncan,
Do you have to editorialize on all your posts? I for one could care less what you think of the site or news byte in question.
Just the facts, please.
You have seen Shakira parody… My friend email me this. It’s freaking funny. I laugh soo hard…. I think people should sing this song, Vanilla Ice:

oh my god!! i have been begging techcrunch to write about my site with no luck.
my site actually contributes to the world not like this offensive garbage.
blaah!
Oh man, looks like the /b/tards got ahold of this one (see: http://www.jiha...you.com/103747/)
lol, I love this site!
Just the type of cutting edge stuff web 2.0 was designed for!

“Offensive” does not equal “bad” and offensive is highly subjective. You may think somebody elses idea is dumb and that’s one thing, but just because you find it dumb OR offensive doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be done or isn’t worth doing.
Many things in life that are worth doing and worth accomplishing will be thought of as being offensive by somebody, somehwere. Should that stop you from doing them? Of course not, not if you think for yourself. Just because you have a different opinion or view than others on a subject matter or issue, doesn’t mean you are bound to not share or express that opinion or thought for fear of offending somebody. Many times offending people is confirmation you are on exactly the right track.
An important aspect of intelligence and intellectual maturity is the ability to rise above or ignore comments, views, or opinions you might find offensive. Life is full of things that you will disagree with or find offensive, whether or not you choose to go through life offended is your choice. Just because you’re offended does not mean that the offensive point of view is not valid.
Duncan, the web design is pitiful! I suppose maybe it was designed for the technically blind? What’s up with the proportions? Design opinions aside, the concept behind the site is stupid and probably created by 2 immature stoner college kids who thought it might be funny.
Here is the funniest one http://www.jiha...you.com/103829/
Seems like a waste of time…whatever makes one happy I guess.
This is exactly how you fight extremism and terrorism, by HUMOR. Kudos to the makers of the site.
It’s great that the creators are trying to fight back by satirizing this whole hooha about terrorism and jihad, but it doesn’t feel like it’s working. The use of the words infidel and jihad.. Poor taste, I think.
It seems nothing is sacred on the web. I don’t think it’s funny, being a Londoner myself, but you can’t stop innovation or experimentation. Great achievement though building this in a weekend.
I don’t like seeing a website where the primary purpose is to offensively bash other people/groups/things.
The site would be even better if it had a fatwa issuing feature. IMHO.
Funny or not it doesn’t make any difference. If the Muslims want a holy war, then let’s give them one.
Lets carpet bomb the -beep- with tactical nuclear weapons, not that I have a Jihad against anyone.
Is that funny? I thought so
Back on topic though, the site is well designed and presented but the purpose of it sucks.
What a nice way to take advantage of people’s anger and channel it towards making money. Clever!
Lighten up everyone!
It is a very simple website with very minimal investment.
Jihad, fatwah, and infidel are all archaic concepts that just do not make sense in the modern era.
H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S-!
Plenty of other businesses use horrible tactics to make money. This is no different. John Stewart and friends can make Jihad jokes, but no turn it into a website and everyone jumps on it. I think it may be distasteful, but if you ARE SURPRISED that something like this is on the net, are we on the same interwebz? Theres much worse then this out there to be pissed about.
I read the same article over the weekends.

What i think is most disturbing is the vanalization of violence as a means to a goal (even if the goal is fun).
Is this an USA based site?
To some degree, we are all victims when it’s about violence. What would be next? Punch your wife? Kill your elders? Make them starve? All very funny stuff, isn’t it?
Sorry but it is in the nature of humor to be offensive. Chaplin’s movies didn’t make him many friends at Ford Motor Co, or in the Hitler Administration.
If this site is actually *hurting* anything, it can only be extremists. Jihad has nothing to do with violence. Extremists stole the word “inner struggle”. I highly disagree with this post; in fact, whenever you can’t say something because that’s “sensitive”, you’re just being a conformist. Paul Graham put it best:
http://www.paul...am.com/say.html
If you think the site is *evil*, show it to a 13 year old and watch the response.
Will they respond with disgust, as they would to an image from “The Grand Abu Ghraib Summer Resort”?
Or will they say “this is so cool, dude, Jihad on those damn World of Warcraft mods!”
I think reasonable people will like this one:
http://www.jiha...you.com/103695/
Well, you know Duncan, somebody had to be the first to put a Jihad on Jihadonyou haha
ps it’s making progress up the charts it’s ranked #7 in top technology Jihads.
Aren’t all satire supposed to hurt someone or the other?
For instance, we have so many satires making fun of GWB, Clinton, Al Gore, Tom Cruise etc, yet no one cares how their respective families will feel about it.
Why should one religion or belief system be above and beyond criticism and not others?
There will be no humor in our lives if everyone keeps quiet so no one gets offended, which is the direction this country is headed to.
IMO, this is a hilarious idea. The only thing missing, is as someone here said, the fatwa issuing feature, or atleast the word fatwa thrown into the mix.
meh. sounds like snubster.com
Looks like a poor mans version of Qipbox.com to me
You know what’s funny is that we’re all mad about a satirical site that just makes reference to a controversial word. But the thing is that the word is not even controversial to anyone here! You guys are all saying, “If I was Muslim, I WOULD take offense.” I haven’t heard anyone say, “Well I’m THAT fellow Muslim that IS offended”. Come on what we should be worried about are real terrorism that have a real Jihad against the US. This site is for fun and if any Muslim got their panties in a bunch then it says a lot about the religion (not understating the result of the Danish cartoon). This site doesn’t offend anyone except those that think it will offend someone. I showed this site to some of my Muslim friends who claimed the concept was hilarious.
