EMC Corporation announced the acquisition of Utah-based startup Mozy this morning, confirming our story of September 23. The price is not being disclosed, but our sources indicate that Mozy was acquired for $76 million.

This was an excellent liquidity event for the Mozy team, which had raised just $1.9 million back in 2005. The company claims 300,000 business and consumer customers for their online backup storage solution.

w00t for Mozy and EMC !!

whats up with the acquisitions lately, it sems like everybody is acquiring lately, whats up with that

300,000 paying customers or just users who are using their free plan, makes heck of a difference i guess Michael.

Mozy is a great surface. Hopefully they will continue to roll out updates. Another similar service I love is Foldershare but every since MSFT bought them they have done nothing.

wow… that is sick! I have never even heard of it, I have to check this out stat!

Carlos: We were putting together a deal with Mozy a few months ago and if I remember correctly, the customer breakdown was as follows:

100k paying MozyHome subscribers
300k MozyFree users
9k MozyPro business customers

Business customers range anywhere from SOHO’s all the way up to GE so it goes without saying that they have an extremely lucrative business. Great buy for EMC.

I’ve been using http://elephantdrive.com/. It works pretty well. They use Amazon s3 for storage.

And to think we were looking at a data storage site costs of three grand a month… This will add a higher level of encryption and slash our remote data storage costs. Shocking.

This space will continue to generate lots of buzz.

I love Mozy, though I really hope EMC knocks off the monthly licensing fee - it makes the pricing unreasonable.

Congrats to the Mozy team. Good product… tried it about a year ago, and although I liked it, the app felt a little unstable and I ended up going with Carbonite for my backup needs. My Carbonite account is up for renewal now, so perhaps I’ll give Mozy another try.

I use CrashPlan — it has so many more options for back up for much less $ — really easy to use. I back my laptop up to my desktop and I’ve had to restore is really simple, it has saved my &$# a couple of times that’s for sure.

Congrats to the Mozy team. Job well done. This acquisition really validates our market. Personally I think in a couple of years they could have added a zero to the end of that price, but nevertheless a great success for the founders and investors. Best of luck with EMC.
