[...] Google Launching AdSense for YouTube TECHCRUNCH Google has launched YouTube Adsense video units that let users monetize a YouTube video embed with text or image ads. The product is not dissimilar to one of the multitude of slide products currently on the market, essentially you use the unit as a display point for your favorite content (in this case from YouTube).
" watching a 20 second ad in a 2 minute video is torture."
I agree I avoid clicking on news stories with the video Icon for that reason.

I would not mind if the main video was shown at 360x240 with a couple of small text ads beside. embed in the player that reads the VIDEO Tags and displays relevant ads.

Once YouTube starts putting ads into the videos, a lot of users will be leaving the site and find other providers because watching a 20 second ad in a 2 minute video is torture.

I agree with Hank, could you please Duncan explain clearly how - plain text or HTML or video - the ads will be embedded in a user video ?

Will the ads be inserted in my video on Youtube only, or for every website in the world embedding my video ?

Can the user select precisely the timecode where the ads could be inserted by Google, or it is at the beginning ? How will Google guarantee the adview ? Will they limit the player finctions to avoid that the viewer could seek over a video ?

Dunan,

Perhaps I am an idiot as many of the other people commenting here seem to, on some level, understand what you are describing. I usually find your stuff quite readable, but here, for me, the writing is a mess and I really don't know what you are saying.

for example:

"Google has launched YouTube Adsense video units that let users monetize a YouTube video embed with text or image ads."

are you saying that the ad unit is a text or image ad that is embedded in a video? Here it sounds like it lets you embed ad units in videos that have embedded text or images. Perhaps this is the case because that is how ad sense would know what ad to play, but then how would an image help select an ad sense ad?

"The product is not dissimilar to one of the multitude of slide products currently on the market, essentially you use the unit as a display point for your favorite content (in this case from YouTube)."

Minor quibbles:
its harder to understand what something is "not dissimilar to" than just saying what it is similar to.

Essentially should start a new sentence.

Major confusion:
What is a "display point for my favorite content?" I dont know what a display point is, and I am not clear at all here how the ad unit works. Is it video or text. When does it display i.e. at the beginning or end of the video. Or are you saying that the ad unit is video and videos can now be ad units that appear the way text ad sense units currently work on regular web pages?

I could keep going, but a new post - perhaps it was a late night :) explaining what you really meant here would be really helpful

as much as i hate ads, as most people do...this looks good. nice placement and very relevant to the video playing; it works for everyone.

if the ad was directly related to the video of my interests i was watching, i can see myself clicking the ads on a high very percentage

Facebook Will be announcing a similar program soon. Except Ads will be over your profile photo.

We have partnered with Viagra and Geritol to launch this new ad feature.

We are going to show them how to do this right!
We are 'hell-bent' on succeeding in ads ...
We just had our FAD (Financial Analysts Day) in Redmond, Wash; and what a FAD we had!
I threw out a couple of crowd pleasing zingers, like I tend to do and the crowd of employees went crazy!

Doing my patented "preacher karate chop" in the air, I whipped arround and screamed:"We are hell-bent and determined to allocate the talent! the resources! the money! the innovation to absolutely become a powerhouse in the ad business! Say yeeees!"
Ray Ozzie and Bill did a little dance in the aisle.

I then did a linebacker stance and exclaimed:
"We are tackling disruptive technology changes head-on, namely the shift to advertising-supported Web services!" Then I stomped on a styrofoam Google logo!
The crowd was going ape!

I wound it up with the old pep-rally arm wave while chanting:
"We are going to be an advertising com-pa-ny,
and we are going to be a devices com-pa-ny!"
The whole crowd joined in;
"We are going to be an advertising com-pa-ny,
and we are going to be a devices com-pa-ny!"
"We are going to be an advertising com-pa-ny,
and we are going to be a devices com-pa-ny!"
"We are going to be an advertising com-pa-ny,
and we are going to be a devices com-pa-ny!"

I did my running skip (high fiving everyone) off stage .....
Whew! That was some FAD!

It's all about balance. No ads is good for consumers bad for publishers. Conversely lots of ads are good for publishers bad for consumers. If they find that middle ground everyone wins and the $$$ flows...

#1 They might even pay the bandwidth bill!
