Erick, great post.

Perhaps Apple is doing the right thing by going slow. They´d never get far with the telcos if they`d just picked up the fight from the start, bringing iChat or VOIP--the telco´s nightmare.

But now...

Now that the things is proven to sell, and that Apple is about to release the SDK, VOIP will have to come. With luck, it will also come to the ipod touch (though it has no mike--an easy add-on). I hope that Skype won`t blow away their chances. In fact, I hope to see iChat, Skype, and Gtalk (Msn messenger is doubtful, right? What message would MS be sending to Zune customers?)

iTunes took a long, long, time to move to DRM-free. It was taboo a few years ago.

This issue--of 3rd party applications, and community building, and freedom of choice on your apps--is one issue which Apple perhaps did the right things by going slowly.

The other issue is the lock-in to AT&T. That´s sad, and I guess it´s here to stay. But if the iPod touch eventually gets skype or iChat; the game changer will be well on its way. And there will be nothing AT&T could do about it.

This whole iPhone thing is so weird. In most parts of Asia, we can buy any phone we like and use it with any carrier we like. And the phone companies still report billions in profits every year. The last time we had phones locked to carriers was 10 years ago. Why is the US market so backward?

@ venkatish, I agree with your point. Carriers are pretty powerful in the market, you get a really good handle on how the carriers work if you're in telecom. It's not to say Apple isn't suffering from it, but agree it seems naive to think this is all about Apple.

this is a good article.

As much as I dislike Google, I get the feeling that they will have an open phone/platform.

Apple is messing this one up royally. It does make perfect sense why they are going out of there way to break 3rd party apps considering the unlocking software was eventually software- based. The real question is: how can Apple allow 3rd party apps without the threat of software-based unlocking software? There really isn't a way to allow one while still fighting the other. It should make for an interesting balancing act if they choose to somehow go down that path.

I don't understand why everybody is blaming apple. Its like iTunes with DRM..it was not apple's choice, but the record labels.

Now amazon gets the credit for selling DRM free music, but it was Apple's which drove a wedge into the CD sales that had a catalyst effect for this change.

Steve jobs is not going to publish the memos of meetings or legal contracts signed with AT & T to justify Apple's decision. Selling iPones on every carrier would have been Apple's first choice and only a retard can believe that Apple would have liked to restrict iPhone to just AT & T. Just think what it would have done to sales figure, if iPhone could be used on any network ? The carriers are absolutely monopolies, something that even a company like Apple cannot fight. They have to play the cell phone game at the carriers terms. Call up AT & T and tell them you want a "un-locked" iPhone and not Apple.

iPhone is going to have the same effect , that iPod/iTunes had and is going to be good for the overall industry.

We should thank Apple to even get this conversation started and stop blaming the rebel cos he showed us the possibilities.

Stop advising Apple and start advicing AT & T's and Verizon's

I might be one of the few iPhone users that didn't install any 3rd party apps. Thanks to all of you guinea pigs for letting me know what happens.

The phone came loaded to do what I intended it to do. I can view my mail (and attachments), surf the web, make calls, listen to music. What else do you want to do with it? Ok, there are some things that were left out (like chat) but I'm sure it will come out in a future update. Why do you think there's extra space for more icons? Be patient and quit trying to mod your phone with stupid apps you probably don't need anyway.

Apple Sicks Lawyers on Innocent Kids Over iPhone!

A couple of imaginitve, curious kids who figured out how to unlock the iPhone are under legal assault from Apple!
Why do we let them get away with this type behavior? Strangling the creativity in our youth, inhibiting free trade and commerce. These bright young men should be applauded for their heroic efforts to give people choice. Why all of the legal machinations against the young and impressionable?
I for one don't want to live in a world where Steve Jobs and the iGustapo can walk into the High School Science fair and start turning over tables screaming,

"No! No! That's my idea! Don't change our stuff you brats! I'll sue your parents! Guards catch that one, beat him! Muahahahahaha!"

An old friend wrote me just yesterday;

"... My son Scotty looked up at me the other day and asked, 'Mommy, can I make a better radio pretty please?' - Steve, I was heartbroken but had to tell him, 'No Scotty, I'm sorry but It might make Steve Jobs mad'. At that moment I saw the twinkle leave his eye and we both sobbed ..."

People! For goodness sake, protect your children from these people. Let the children's laughter remind us of how we used to be.

YOU HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD!

This is exactly why I won't buy an iPhone. I need something that does what I need it to do. Things like run real software, vpn access for work, etc. It doesn't matter how nicely animated the iPhone is, it's bricked from day one and I don't see myself getting it (probably ever).

Say what you want about palm and winmob devices, but at least you can do what you want with them.

Why do you (and almost every other site on the web lately), keep spreading this *lie* that Apple is bricking phones that have third party apps installed? This is just not the case at all. You also directly imply, without any evidence whatsoever, that this was an *intentional* malicious act on Apple's part. That this is "payback" of some kind to those that defy them.

NONE OF THIS IS TRUE.

Yes, if you have unlocked your iPhone, updating it to the new version of the firmware will brick it, because you screwed up the original firmware that the update expects to find.

All the rest of the stuff you hear is absolute nonsense. If you have third party apps, they are erased by the update, the iPhone is not "bricked" by the update because you had third party apps, it just returns it to normal.

Hey, great post, just signing the statement, cause I think apple needs to wake up to this.

Feel free to copy my letter

Mr Jobs,

I'm writing to express my recent disappointment with Apple Inc. I'm disappointed with the bitter attitude towards third party development on the iPhone. As I'm sure you're aware many methods of unlocking and developing software for the iPhone have surfaced. Instead of embracing this progress and development Apple has chosen to stomp it's foot on developers and hurt the very people that want to give you money. I can understand your desire to control the phone but there is something most companies don't realize. The ability to unlock hardware and develop applications for it makes it MORE desirable in the eyes of a consumer. This is something I would expect Apple to understand.

I implore Apple to release a mature SDK for the iPhone and not release firmware specifically for the cause of closing doors which allow unlocks.

In a corporate playing field littered with selfish and cut throat businesses I look to Apple as a beacon of reason and sanity. Please don't let me down.

"They could be tuned a million different ways to the needs of a million different customers."

This is a rather vague statement that doesn't really drive at the heart of the PC's success in the industry. A lot of the PC's success had to do with perception, and IBM, and the strategy Apple adopted to try to beat IBM being one that didn't pay off. You do seem to mention software, and yes software availability had a huge role in the success as well.

Steve Jobs has not forgotten this lesson about developer support, and I'm pretty sure he and the miracle workers at Apple are working out a way to allow 3rd party software without exposing OS X to all the bugs and crashing that Jobs, rightly, simply will not tolerate on the iPhone. There are at least a few things, like missing protection and tolerance features found on OS X for Mac, or a dedicated memory system for 3rd parties, that Apple may have had to leave out to bring out more performance in the software to make the iPhone snappier. Jobs would do that.

I hope this process doesn't take too long though, because the iPhone could very well live or die based on 3rd party support.
