Duncan,

The iphone would be great in Australia, the problem is for you over there that apple is notorious for their products breaking down or having problems. What do you do if your iphone sh$ts itself ? You have no warranty ?

Thanks for the updated title. Now just the first sentence is wrong.

> Google has plugged the Google Web ToolKit demonstrating an iPhone specific version of Google Reader.

Should read more like:

> Google has plugged the Google Web ToolKit demonstrating an iPhone targeted feed reader.

I don't mean to be difficult about this, it's just that with TechCrunch's influence, this kind of misinformation can spread far and fast.

Appreciate the re-written title. The old description wasn't very accurate. I've been using Google Reader on my iPhone as soon as it was released, and it definitely hasn't changed since it's original inception. In fact, Google Reader for the iPhone is pretty horrible. I'm sure they can do better.

"this article is wildly inaccurate. Google has NOT released an iPhone version of google reader. The screenshots are of the mobile version of google reader which has been around for a long time."

Ben, do you actually have an iPhone? There is actually a version of Google Reader for the iPhone that is different than the normal Google Reader mobile. Might want to check it out.

right, re-written title enough? I looked at the pictures, they look pretty similar, but lesson learned: don't believe people on Twitter telling you something is new when it isn't...and good on all of you for having an iPhone long enough to spot the difference :-)

Google Reader Mobile has been around since May 2006. See the launching blog post here: http://googlereader.blogspot.com/2006/05/you-can-now-use-google-reader-from.html

The post is still inaccurate. What was announced today has NOTHING to do with Google Reader. It's a totally separate GWT application. If you take a look at the pictures in the GWT blog post you linked to you'll notice they look totally different from the images you took of your phone browsing Google Reader Mobile.

Google is not "plugging" Google Reader for the iPhone. It is "plugging" Google Web Toolkit and that it can be used to create applications targeted at the iPhone.

Readers are right about this site being old. The day I got my iphone (1 month) back, i have been using this site quite regularly and nothing has changed. I use other feed readers like bloglines (for iphone) and netvibes (for iphone), Google is the best in the lot. Although the problem you highlighted about TAGS' link is very true. But this topic is too old!!

Other iPhone users are reporting the interface as being new, however as I've only had an iPhone for under a week I can't do the before and after comparison to confirm, so if it's not new, I stand corrected, consider it new to TechCrunch and I've stripped the new references out to be sure. Certainly a Google search for Google Reader for iPhone brings up a lot of people previously complaining about there not being a dedicated Reader iPhone page, so consider this post for them :-) As for it not being an iPhone app, WTF? the linked page specifically refers to it as an iPhone app.

Green-e
correct, it's on Optus and pulling data via GPRS, which I've read is about 44k vs 58k on Telstra's Edge network, so as much as it isn't super quick, it's usable. The phone would also appear to cache regular sites well, for example it's fairly quick to load sites like TechCrunch and Techmeme for me.

this article is wildly inaccurate. Google has NOT released an iPhone version of google reader. The screenshots are of the mobile version of google reader which has been around for a long time. What was released was a sample GWT application that uses the google feeds API (rtfa!).

Quite a low point in reporting, techcrunch.

Duncan,

After reading the "About" on TC (noticing that you live here in Australia) and looking at those pics, I'm guessing your using your iPhone on the Optus YES network? Am I correct?

So I'm guessing it works fine over here? Do you know anyone else that has an iPhone?

The Google Reader iPhone interface is not new, and the blog post you linked to isn't talking about Google Reader, but a sample app demonstrating GWT.
