TechCrunch40 Launch Success: Ponoko
by Michael Arrington on September 24, 2007

We are being flooded with emails regarding the TechCrunch40 conference – things we did right, things we did wrong (lots, apparently), and suggestions for next year. All are welcome, but what I like to see the most are the emails from presenting companies talking about what’s happened to them since they went up on stage last week.

I’ll be pulling all of the feedback into a wrap up post later this week, but today I received an email from Ponoko, one of the forty launching startups, that really made me feel like the whole thing was worth it. “We reached 1 million website hits within 23 hours 27 mins and 6 secs of launch,” said Derek Elley, the company’s chief strategy officer.

They also wrote a blog post noting some of the coverage the company got immediately after launching – there was a lot of it. So much, in fact, that the site went down for a while.

Ponoko is a cool way for designers to create new physical products and sell them. Users collaborate on design and prototyping all the way through to production. Check it out – the website is back up and humming.

  • too bad you can’t watch a video of their pitch since TC can’t seem to post a video to the internet.

  • you had chad at the conference, give him a call, I’m sure he can walk you thru posting a video, it’s not that hard

  • That is an amazing amount off traffic. Kudos to everyone involved.

Looks like a great service to boot!

  • there is only so much you could do with 2D cut outs. I wish they did moulds too :(

  • I have question. Can Ponoko make me flying car installed gaint boombox and loud speaker?

  • One thing you guys did wrong with the conference? No end all, be all post that links to every post from the conference here on TechCrunch.

  • 1 M hits does not add up. check the alexa rating for ponoko…

  • I remember reading there were supposed to videos posted of everything that went on at TC40, is there a link somewhere?

  • Hits?

Who the heck measures traffic in “hits” anymore?

1999 called, they want their meaningless metric back.

  • @les madras: Hits != visitors. He may be right, but no one serious (or worth taking seriously) uses “hits” as a performance measure any more. Having said that, Alexa is also a pretty flakey measure as well.

  • I think mint got hit pretty bad too.

@1 I totally agree with you. Please post some videos of the event, I have seen a video about powerset, but looks like that went down too. I would really like to see some videos, pleaseeeeeee.

I SHOULD HAVE BEEN KEYNOTE SPEAKER!

You guys really missed the boat!
All of those Clearasil Faced wannabe kids mouthing off on stage!
    Sheesh

  • Ditto on the videos!

Are they going to be uploaded or not? Plz just tell us now so that we do not have to keep checking, it is starting to piss me off (I hate being promised something with it then not being delivered on).

  • No way no how they got a million hits, we lunched on the same day as techcrunch40 and we are currently 30k up from 2.5 million.
and we are still going up, i remember sending techcrunch a bunch of emailes but i didn’t even get a reply, so i just lunched it with out them.
i got blogged once and then BOOOM am still getting blogged all around the world!! it is such a weird feeling looking at analytics

Dont get me wrong i love TC but they never replied to any of my emailes.
Hey guys, can someone please tell me at what rank does a site become a money maker?
I have not advertised as of yet, I am trying to establish a position before i even think about that.
    thanks

  • “We reached 1 million website hits within 23 hours 27 mins and 6 secs of launch”. Kind of worrying when the CSO is talking about hits rather than visits, page views or visitors.

1 million in 1 day… It will be interesting to see what visits rate ponoko can keep after the initial TC40-effect.

  • This was my favourite product at TC40, I mentioned it to everyone I met out there and people thought I had lost the plot, I think this is well thought out and will fly in massively in the USA

  • Will you use the voting system conference attendees used to tally up who had the most votes and positive score?

After our 12 hour demonstration I went up to my room at the Palace and immediately checked our votes. We were pleasantly surprised to see we received 36 positive votes (score of 4.0) during that 12 hr period. Upon reviewing all 100 companies and the votes they received, we were in the top 5 out of the 100 DemoPit companies; a non funded company.

    Thanks for a great conference!

  • Its a brilliant idea. Lets hope they dont mess it up with the execution. Congratulations!

  • The issue with Ponoko is they seem to make most of there stuff via a laser cutter. The problem with that is the products really aren’t manufacturer ready. Techcunrch profiled a company incuby that was going to help with this, but hasn’t launched yet. I hear a speaker in Pittsburgh talk about a company called Davison, and they seem to have figured out how to make products fit into corporate product line. They do research, design, prototyping, packaging, and Licensing. Ponoko would need to duplicate that to be successful. Maybe they should partner up with them.

  • Videos!?!?!?
Grrr, does it hurt to provide a little farking update?

  • Not surprised these guys are getting so much action, while a few do it, not many web services cross into the physical world like ponoko does.

I like making unique things to surround me in my environment, making beatifully finished things is very hard though, the pro finish the laster cuter generates is very cool.

Great conference Mike, I like most everyone I talked to had a ball. As well as some great Demo’s i really enjoyed the quality of panelists you had, founders of flickr, blogger, jotspot talking about exits and the like, they were passionate and real and for a web entrepreneur its exactly the sort of inspiration I want to hear.

For those who want videos just keep posted with the companies, Mikes getting them initial exposure and connecting them with you, its up to you now to stay with the companies and get the content as it unfolds,

    cheers,
    tim
