Chat With Mark Zuckerberg At TechCrunch40: The Video
by Michael Arrington on September 24, 2007

One of the highlights of the TechCrunch40 conference last week was when I had an opportunity to sit down with Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. We talked for 45 minutes about some of the big projects Facebook has launched over the last year – including the launch of the News Feed in 2006, the Facebook Platform, dealing with user abuse by third party developers and much, much more.

Mark also made a surprise announcement about mid way through the talk – the launch of fbFund, a new entity that will make grants to facebook application developers.

The entire video is embedded above.

  • breaking news on WSJ:
Microsoft is in talks with Facebook about making an investment in the social-networking site that could value Facebook at $10 billion or more.

  • I’m viewing tech crunch from a terminal on a rack server. I wish to listen on my nano. Can you please post a link to the mp3?
The rack servers have USB ports in case your wondering and I can’t tear myself away. I’m sure many others are in the exact same situation. Thx.

  • The terminal is X based and I have amarok installed. Thx once more.

  • It is amazing how one strategic decision changed the entire future and media interest in this company.

Now even Google is changing its tactics

  • I was born visionary.

Yeap, Microsoft most likely buy Facebook. Google is extremely upset — waaaaaaayyy upset. They decide to attack and go rival with Facebook.

Facebook is most likely get into secret Web Operating System deal with microsoft. I bet you… You will see tiny window logo it says “powered by Microsoft”. When you turn on PC. It will see blue screen with FACEBOOK logo and tiny microsoft logo on right had corner. That is Future WEB OS.

Yahoo don’t need Web Operating system. They did secret deal with Microsoft & facebook. People can make money on Widget thing faster than Google Adsense.

Google need operating system fast. Google tech guys can’t invent operating system. You need someone who is born 1970s and have knowledge PLAN 9 OS. Unix Founders won’t help Google. They won’t give them secrets. You also need Gary Kildel spirit who came back to life. He knows how build real webOS go rival with Facebook OS.

Google is all alone with billion dollar assets. They need next generation operating system.

  • Yeah, why isn’t this on TalkCrunch?

  • MS will not buy Facebook, guaranteed. You read it here.

  • I think God throw Gary Kildall’s spirit back to earth. He didn’t finish his job — WEB OS for Google.

Where to find him. I don’t know. I think Google Earth. I done Google search for Google operating System. Google guys have extremely hard time developing OS.

Government, companies, startup WEBOS, corporations won’t help Google to develop OS. These people are weird…

  • Now I keep getting this error:
    /var/www/techcrunch.com/trunk/html/wp-content/plugins/wp_ozh_betterfeed.php

As if the entire TechCrunch website is just a word press installation with a custom css template????

    http://www.tech...om/wp-login.php

Please hide it, the humanity, it’s like walking in on mom and dad go at it. Burn my eyes….
The investment, it has to be more than this!

    btw, please fix da bug.

  • @7….

Microsoft will buy FACEBOOK… The market shares is huge. Because Google stock jump 500 when they purchases startup like spreadsheet, Google maps, Jotspot, etc.

MSFT would boost stock if they purchase Facebook. They could help them build next generation operating system. Mark Zuckerberg is young kid. He’s almost like new Bill Gates. Gates and Zuckerberg went Harvard and drop out too. You see…. Mark is evil.

Mike Arrington didn’t realize he was getting into. He talked to future Evil empire.

    Just watch their marketshares…

  • @10

    A. They would have bought it by now. There would be no reason to let a company accumulate value before acquiring it. Which is why Google snapped up YouTube before it got too big.

    B. They saw what happened to NewsCorp that desperately tried to unload MySpace to Yahoo et Al. when it finally figured out that the click through rates on SN sites are horrible, and that they are too easily reproduced, because they are a mashup of existing web software that has been around for 10+ years.

    C. Microsoft has a history of buying businesses that ad value to their own. Their business is Office and Windumbs. They invested heavily in Live and it is a failure. They won’t throw gas on the fire.

    D. They already have MSN Spaces and the youtube clone soapbox.

  • Mike – is it possible to adjust the audio levels? Your level is great but I can barely make out what Mark is saying.

  • Mark Zuckerberg is very handsome. If I weren’t a good Christian I would do something naughty with him…lol

  • I remember Facebook brought Parakey. They are heading to create the future OS. If someone invented next generation operating – GOOGLE OS or FACEBOOK OS. Companies like Intel, IBM, oracle, SAP, etc… and more and more creating jobs. The economy will be bigger than old dot com era.

Now, Google guy couldn’t create operating system. Linux won’t kick through PLAN 9. Only MS could kick through PLAN9.

Here’s why VMWare. On your stock type “VMW”. It’s big….

Trust me, It’s career suicide for any programmers, entrepenures, developers to create OS for Google. It’s too damn hard to create one. You can tried it. No one is stopping you. What stops you is patent rights..

    :/

  • Mark Zuckerberg… Smart kids, but looks a bit like a robot. Anyway, brain matters.

  • PLEASE PLEASE stop posting these videos on any other sites but youtube! every other site sucks because it’s slow. I watch it for 5 seconds and wait another 5 for buffering. never have problems with youtube@!

  • how about videos for the 40 demo companies ? it’s been a week already

  • Is it too much to ask for the volume on these videos to be normalized to a sensible level before being uploaded? I’m getting tired of having to crank up the volume on my speakers only to get my ear drums blown out when another system sound goes off.

  • Who the Heck is Mark Suckerberg?

I sholud have been keynote speaker!
    TC WILL PAY!
    http://fakestev...er.blogspot.com

  • MSFT evaluates $10 Billion valuation for FB
    http://vidsonly.blogspot.com

  • Hoaaa, i’am weak up this morning and found this news. If this is not hoax, this is a big news, because Facebook developing with PHP not ASP.

  • Fake Steve,

I’ll say it again. You… are… hi-LAR-ious. I wish you all the best with your site. I wanted you to know some of us are truly rooting for you. We can’t wait to see what you come up with next.

  • “Mark Zuckerberg is very handsome. If I weren’t a good Christian I would do something naughty with him…lol”

I know I don’t only speak for myself when I say I don’t wanna read about this.
Can’t you send him an email or something?

  • buffer, buffer, buffer, buffer

    real nice video tech

    this is ridiculous

  • worked fine for me. good interview. now wheres all the others :P

  • Cool! I was waiting to watch these after reading it.

  • Does anyone know how much of the company Zuckerman owns?

  • whats with the other time check videos that show up when I hit the |

  • does anyone else think Mark Zuckerberg is cute? He is a little stiff in interviews but that’s probably because he’s nervous. I think he’s adorable.

  • I would just like to add the fact that the net is ultimately going to be a fight between Google and Microsoft. Other players will align themselves on either side.

Can you imagine in a couple years when Facebook has 200 million users worldwide, with half of them logging in every day, and a 25 year old will be CEO of this company? I can’t think of a parallel in world history where someone as young as me had this much influence. Oh wait. Alexander the Great. I want Facebook to be the social operating system of the web. That is something Google isn’t and is never going to be. At this point, nobody is closer to that vision than Facebook. That is what Microsoft understands. If they had any sense Google would have approached Facebook for a buyout. Instead they allowed their ego to get in the way.

The Internet is The Lazy Man’s Way to getting rich. The WSJ story proves that. I wonder how many of the firms at Techcrunch 4.0 will hit the jackpot. Hopefully at least 90 per cent. After all this is the Internet not the old economy. In the old economy you have to slog in a mcob for a paltry 50k each month. The first thing that is important for any net entrepreneur is not to have ethics. That is why I breached security ay Harvard and violated copyrights and privacy. I had hacked into House websites to harvest images of students without their permission and made money with it. In 2004 I made Facebook, took a leave of absence from the college, and a year later dropped out like my role model Bill Gates.
