Mixx To Take A New Look At Social News

I generally don’t get that excited when I hear about yet another Digg-like social news site coming on the scene, but Virginia-based Mixx may be different. Part of the reason is the founding team, which has deep Internet and news experience.
The company is led by CEO Chris McGill, formerly the General Manager of Yahoo News and more recently the VP Strategy at USA Today. The site describes itself at its core as taking the best features of Digg, LinkedIn and My Yahoo. Look for a private beta launch soon, sign up now on the landing page.
The company is almost certainly funded but won’t yet disclose any details.
We have a few conceptual screen shots, below. It’s hard to understand these without a little bit of context, but my interest is piqued. Top screen shot is the unauthenticated home page. Second is the home page when signed in. Third is “groups” view. More on Mixx soon.

Users love all in applications. It has all the right components simple, clear, and veteran players. This could be very successful. I can’t wait to try it.
Ooooh, I want’s me an invite
Looks like Digg + groups.
Great, just what the world needs…ANOTHER DIGG COPY CAT!!!
not enough new here…
Digg + groups. Sounds like a winner to me. So simple, people are bound to flock.
I would give my left testicle for anything that will put the negative Digg users (i.e. Diggnation) out on the street with ineffective power accounts. Dugg for the irony of it.
Hurray! News needs to be made more social!
Digg was fun for awhile, but now it seems to be more of a popularity contest. If the same people are making the front page, they’re becoming de facto editors, no? And with a smaller community, you’re more likely to get noticed. I like this AjaxNinja post on Digg’s hostile user base: http://www.ajaxninja.com/?p=163
Hmm, this might have potential. I would love to see it do well.
Great name
Mike, this post is a little light on the details…what’re you doing, preparing for some huge conference or something??
We’ve got to look at the positive side a little more often. I too would like to see this do well. The more the merrier. Now if I could just find the time !
This looks great can’t wait to try it out!
Nice, cool domain name. Much…much better than hulu!
Closed betas seem to be the way to generate a buzz.
chris is a rockstar, so i’m excited to see it in action.
news portalling has been beaten to death.
this is another rehash on “upvote” news, which in its most primitive form is already available at yahoo news as “most emailed”. for more refined examples see digg and reddit. one day people will want an alternative to digg and reddit, but that day hasn’t come just yet.
yahoo news works because it is simple, straightforward, and constantly updated. cnn pretty much takes the same approach…because it works.
The experience may help these guys but I quite like the idea.
Check out http://www.Corbaa.com, an outcubator-launched user-generated news site for the Turkish market; launched 1 month ago.
why it has to be digg copycat, why not be creative and start their own social news with its characteristic that differs from others… if this is just like digg, why would people visit there instead of digg that already famous ?
