What Facebook is becoming is an Operating System/Ecosystem. A couple of weeks ago I did not get it, but now I do. When I was at Pictage - VP of Technology - I was pushing the same concept. Open it up to the world and let them use the solid platform I built for expanding the development. We only went as far as co-branding which is not very far. Pictage would be a different company now ... a lot more successful.

Heh...I wonder if Odesk's test includes "Preparing for inevitable Facebook API downtime" as a topic. If today is any indication, it ought to.

#1: While that's true, apps are amongst the things frequently reviled by some of the more vocal members of the facebook community.

Ok, I'll have to admit: this is wholly unscientific: I'm kind of lukewarm to facebook, and most of what I've read about it comes from members of sites like digg, who are, obviously, vocal, quick to form semi-irrational opinions, and largely outside the mainstream (even on a tech-ish social network like Facebook.)

So I don't know what it means. I think they've done a pretty good job with their API, and it's quite impressive to have spent so much effort and time on making their system open (although it's open in a closed sort of way, interestingly enough.)

Facebook's reinvention will probably go down in tech history as one of the most innovative competitive strategies, ever.

It would be intriguing to unveil WHO initially thought of this new business model - and what resistance they got at first.
