oDesk, a next generation marketplace for contract developers, has recently seen a spike in requests for Facebook developers.
oDesk offers developers a number of aptitude tests to certify their programming skills in various areas - existing tests include Ajax, CSS, .Net, DHTML and ASP, among others. They’ve now added a forty minute Facebook aptitude test as well. Companies can now sort through developers based on their skill level in creating Facebook applications.
In related news, VentureBeat is reporting that a new course, called Create Engaging Web Applications Using Metrics and Learning on Facebook will be offered this fall in Stanford’s computer science department. Dave McClure is a co-instructor.

Facebook’s reinvention will probably go down in tech history as one of the most innovative competitive strategies, ever.
It would be intriguing to unveil WHO initially thought of this new business model - and what resistance they got at first.
#1: While that’s true, apps are amongst the things frequently reviled by some of the more vocal members of the facebook community.
Ok, I’ll have to admit: this is wholly unscientific: I’m kind of lukewarm to facebook, and most of what I’ve read about it comes from members of sites like digg, who are, obviously, vocal, quick to form semi-irrational opinions, and largely outside the mainstream (even on a tech-ish social network like Facebook.)
So I don’t know what it means. I think they’ve done a pretty good job with their API, and it’s quite impressive to have spent so much effort and time on making their system open (although it’s open in a closed sort of way, interestingly enough.)
Heh…I wonder if Odesk’s test includes “Preparing for inevitable Facebook API downtime” as a topic. If today is any indication, it ought to.
Useless. Impossible to prevent cheating. What’s next? Online urinalysis and polygraphs?
Total bullshit.
@#1: Yup… And for inventing the Internet
This site will surely be hacked. Exclusivity angers nerds.
Facebook continues to take the world by storm…
You don’t need to go to Stanford to “Learn about facebook”, you can join my Facebook group “Facebook Tips (and Tricks)”!

In other news — oDesk jumps on the Facebook bandwagon with a lame PR stunt.
What Facebook is becoming is an Operating System/Ecosystem. A couple of weeks ago I did not get it, but now I do. When I was at Pictage - VP of Technology - I was pushing the same concept. Open it up to the world and let them use the solid platform I built for expanding the development. We only went as far as co-branding which is not very far. Pictage would be a different company now … a lot more successful.
Thanks ODesk! Nine months ago I found thru your site a trustworthy programmer who helped me create a new form of Internet communication!
