[...] Greylock Partners Invests In Stealth Search Engine Cuill TECHCRUCH Techcrunch is reporting that pre-launch search engine Culli has raised a $4 million Series A round from Greylock Partners, with partner David Strohm taking a board seat. Cuill, which was founded by husband and wife team Tom Costello and Anna Patterson, can supposedly index web pages at 1/10th the cost of Google (a significant competitive advantage) and has claims of relevance improvements over existing search engines. Patterson was until recently the architect of Google’s TeraGoogle, and the team also brought on Russell Power from TeraGoogle as well. The rumor is that they’ve continued to hire senior search experts away from Google. Source> [...]

WHAT’S MY FLIVOR?

Get ready for a revolution in the way you get connected. Flivor requires no downloads and lets you find and interact LIVE with people in your area all through your mobile phone. With Flivor you will be able to experience live streaming video feeds of other members in your locale. You can search, watch and go live yourself all in a matter of seconds.

HOW IT WORKS?

Using WiMax, compass and GPS integrated in the mobile phone, Flivor will connect to users in your area and allow you to video call them without having to share your phone number; it is a live stream IM where you don't need to add buddies.

Imagine a Friday night where you feel like checking out the latest summer blockbuster. Just click the Flivor icon on your mobile phone, select an activity, in this case "movie" and Flivor does the rest. Flivor's server searches members in your area and displays those who share your interests. One click will open a video feed between you and the user you choose. If you don't match up, go back to your list and click on another prospect to watch their live stream. Flivor offer variety of activities such as restaurant, movie, concert, football games, art exhibit and opens up endless possibilities to interact.

Using Adobe Flash player, Microsoft’s new SilverLight player, Quicktime H.264 or Opera's native flash replacement, Flivor lets you join in on someone’s cam chat or go live yourself. Have a private conversation or a cam party. You can search for other live users and easily hookup with your friends or make new ones. Flivor also delivers premium live video content from music and movies to sports and style. Whatever you’re into it’s on and it’s LIVE. Your live streaming experience is moving outside the box. With Flivor you can access, post, update and watch live video from your computer or your cell phone to any computer, cell-phone or TV.

HOW DO I GET MY FLIVOR?

It’s coming soon…real soon. Keep checking back and we’ll keep you in the loop as we approach the launch date. To get more info about FLIVOR and be part of the private beta contact us, we’ll be happy to fill you in. If you are a content creator and want to know how your shows can be featured on Flivor get in touch with us as well. Tell us what you have in mind and we’ll let you know more about the features in our private beta and how we can help you reach an audience.

Tagging is what is going to alter SERPS, and you don't have to try and supplant Google. Right now, tags on social bookmarking, photo, conversation, and etc sites are in such dissarray, that little changes can throw Google's results into a spin.

Whatever company that can do for tagging what the dewey decimal system did for libraries, will be the next king of search.

This spider was hammering my server quite hard a couple months ago. In fact it was slowing down my service considerably. They were disregarding my robots.txt so I sent an email to the address provided which bounced. My remaining option was to ban their spider and that's what I ended up doing. Now I've had no problems at all with Cuill. We even had a discussion about this spider on a webmaster forum where several others were having similar problems. It's interesting seeing them get mentioned on Techcrunch because I just thought they were a nuisance.

sure you might not have a problem finding what you want. I do, it still takes me way to long to find specific content. (even though I use http://www.searchlores.org/ strategies)

How ever my problems are minor compared to those that my family experiences or friends, who are not tech-savvy. Searching is still tedious, and people are not getting the results, because people expect different results. (Paris, for one person it is a location, for the other a celebrity).

If you had asked a gamer a few years ago what could be done to improve gaming, few would have suggested a concept like the Wii. How ever what the Wii did to the gaming industry, will happen with the search too. NLP is interesting, as is an idea like Eurekster, I have a few ideas of my own to improve valid hits without having to add keywords or dramatically change current search technology. The consumer will ultimately decide, and right now the "normal" people are not getting good results (this is relative) because the system is not being built for them, imo. Yet "normal" people make a large part of the audience.

Wow, two Search engine pro couple. I love the idea of marrying a web-addict girl!

Hiring away from Google? That's weired.

I am really interested to know what kind of improvement you are talking about?
Never have I faced a problem with the current technology to get desired results, So unless you do something radically different like apply NLP on the entire internet (powerset) you will not suceed. The cost advantage today doesnt matter, google is way ahead and far richer. It is like there rae so many manufacturers with cheap mp3 players, but none can be the IPOD.

I think there is plenty of room for improvement in the search engine market. While the cost advantage of cuill is impressive, it has no effect/benefit for the end consumer. So why should they switch search engines?

[...] Source:Techcrunch We got (at least) one thing wrong when we wrote about super-stealth search startup Cuill last week. We said we believed the company self funded after searching for venture capital.
The Web 2.0 generation has spawned the biggest use of Ebonics in the self styled vision of progress and uniqueness.

When the media screams and howls enough of it - the name 'Cuill' will stick fast and strong as long they give the masses what they are searching for.

Not everything should be searched via an engine. That's why we have the Yellow pages for.

We all know the only thing that will kill Google will be not another search engine but the demise of PPC ads.

It would not be enough to steal users away from Goggle. What other advantages do they have?

1/10th cost of google. That is significant competitive advantage indeed. They might end up giving google a run for their money at this rate. Good to see startups like these take on behemoths in the search engine space. Good luck to them.
