The ad above, featuring people who applied to be in it via a special Taco Bell/Gizmoz contest that ran last month, was played at the MTV Music Awards this evening.
The ad is sort of standard mainstream media stuff complete with carefully diversified (sexually and ethnically) winners, but it’s a great showcase for Gizmoz’s technology (see our launch post for an overview of their 3D avatar product). And congrats to Hunter, Mallory and Obinna, who just had their fifteen minutes (in this case fifteen seconds) of fame. Click on their names to see what kind of audition was needed to win the contest.

let’s be fatty fatty fat fat together
ewwwwwwwww gross people who wants 3d avatars of themselves
Very new for advertising and great exposure for Gizmoz. However, it’s still tough to circumvent the fact that it’s still bad for you and has about as much nutrition as a cardboard box
cool, realistic-looking avatars.
kinda neat how you don’t need a live video stream of yourself, but can still look live and genuine to viewers.
The avatars look too realistic to me… I just mite livestream myself….
I don’t get it. I was playing with this technology ten years old. It’s better looking now but without real-time interactivity it’s about as exciting as email. The commercial is less than memorable. The auditions were barely understandable. Gizmoz will have a hard time retaining users past “golly, this is neat-o”. I doubt we’ll see many more commercial applications since you can get significantly better avatars from an intern (well, I used to anyways). This fad of having your customers build your ads is either doomed or dooming, I haven’t decided yet. I’d like to remind all artists that they should never work for free or on spec. Unless you want a society that can’t support its artists financially.
@5, yeah – but if you stream yourself live you have to fix yourself up, make sure lighting is good, adjust the camera, and every other bs issue
this avatar image creates the perfect you, for you to use whenever on the quick if you need to stream yourself
pretty lame ad… although it does seem like an accurate reflection of the general apathy, anxiety, self-consciousness and homogeneity that seems to describe a rising percentage of youth today. yawn.
Die sehn zwar schön aus. Aber wer braucht das? Ich kann mir kaum vorstellen dass, das jemand nutzen wird. Vielleicht ein paar teens, aber wird trotzdem so ein Flop wie ComBots.
The idea of the ad is cool. I like users creating their ads.
@8 Did you even see the submissions the winning users made? They were pretty funny and seemed like thought went into it. I think this is a successful campaign for tacobell. I’m sure it got a lot of people to think of taco-bell in order to create something.
@5, http://en.wikip.../Uncanny_Valley
when is EA going to buy these guys?
BORING!!!!!
Good work Gizmoz. Good luck and see you soon.
At least the TC “race card” didn’t come out on this one… I mean look at how the one guy is characterized in the video. And what the other two say to him.
PS: Where’s the link to the audition submissions?
Hey chrisco you can click on their names to see the auditions.
I thought the pinata one was SO funny!! Are the auditions commercials on TV too? Fourthmeal does sound pretty good, I have to check out their fourthmeal website.
I was the photographer for the image used for Obinna here in Huntsville AL. I think it all turned out great.
