Nokia Marketing Team Reaches Out To Angry iPhone Users
by Michael Arrington on September 6, 2007

Nokia’s marketing department did some quick thinking yesterday. They’re targeting iPhone users who are angry about the fact that they paid $200 more for their phone than they would have if they waited.

They’ve taken out ads on Google that suggest users check out Nokia’s new Mosh mobile social network. The ads, which appear for searches on “iphone price drop,” say “Sorry, Early Adopters” and suggests they salvage their iPhone experience by checking out Mosh.

There isn’t much to suggest that any angry iPhone users will be turning to Nokia Mosh to ease their pain. But it is some good thinking by a Nokia marketer nonetheless.

Update: Steve Jobs has issued an open letter announcing Apple will be giving a $100 store credit to everyone who purchased an iPhone from Apple or AT&T and isn’t eligible for any other credits.

  • Wahahaha , interesting Ads.

Thanks to Nokia’s marketing team, lots of fun. Keep on!!

  • Consumers dont have justification for being “angry”. They bought a new product and paid a premium for being the first buyers. That happens with any product. Get over it.

  • ahuahuaha, they are fun and actually what Apple did is not, dropping price just like that…

  • Good enough thinking to get them on TechCrunch ;)

  • Of course, the fact that iphone users can get the refund if they purchase the apple product within 14 days of a price reduction then it can’t hurt.

  • 14 days? oops. How many dollars per day of bragging rights?

  • So what? That’s the price for being an early adopter.

  • Just heard about the iPhone price drop for the first time. Usually when I am watching the news at home and I hear Apple, the channel is already changed.

I hate to say this, but iPhone users got what they deserve for falling for such an over hyped phone.

As a Nokia only user, two thumbs up for the good marketing effort.

  • Well it doesn’t make me want to switch to Nokia, but I would definitely be pissed if I bought an iPhone a month ago and wasted $200.

  • weird. running that search, brings up no ads at all for me.

    see http://farm2.st...78e38b787_o.jpg

in fact any search with ‘nokia’ and ‘iphone’ in it also brings up no ads.

  • New ad on that search:

    Congrats, Late Adopters
iPhone drops $200. Now you get all the iPhone for 2/3 the price.
    (store.apple.com)

This is a hidden gem of google — ad wars.

  • Well … we all knew it was going to happen … and it you did not … what stone do you live under? I still think the iPhone is the best phone in the market today.

  • I bought a Nokia N80ie when they were $500 and watched the price drop to almost half when the N95 came out. I agree that, as a consumer, I do not really have the “right” to be angry. 30 days delayed buyers remorse always seems to take hold though!

  • Apple has responded. http://img210.i...bastardsxb2.png

    Congrats, Late Adopters
iPhone drops $200. Now you get all
the iPhone for 2/3 the price.
    store.apple.com/

I’m trying to keep a cool head about this. But damn, I feel burned by apple.

  • This probably isn’t actually targeted to current iPhone users.

My best guess is that iPhone users won’t be searching on “iphone price drop” cause they’re not buying. If they got mad, they’re more likely to be assuming it’s true, talking smack and not wanting to hear the details right away.

Or, since that first round was full of hardcore types, they probably were reading about it on GearCrunch or wherever.

Lots of people thinking about buying one might be searching on that phrase. That means they might go for free content that they could then use on the phones they already have.

This is more about laughing at angry people than tempting angry people with free but basically unrelated content.

That said, Mosh looks kind of cool.

  • Good thing I am an early adopter?

  • I still don’t understand why the “early adopters” are angry. People bought into the hype and spent $600. If you didn’t have $600 to spend, then you wouldn’t have bought the phone.

    stop crying

  • Apple are running ads on that same page at the moment which would probably infuriate most iPhone owners:

    http://www.goog...rop&spell=1

  • Nice bit of touche work there. Like when Michael Jackson who promoted Pepsi passed out due to dehydration and Coke put full paid ads in the paper saying “Thirsty?”

Early adopters can be a bit angry since it was a pretty quick price drop. You don’t mind paying a premium for 6 months lead on the turtle market but only a few months hurts.

Billy is right about the cost though. Early means a higher price, always.

I’m just bitter because I have a Cingular 8525 I got 6 months ago that works 80% brilliant and 20% completely painful.

    Mick a la Tangler

  • I have to agree the new ad by apple is like rubbing salt in the wounds of their most loyal customers. And in regards to early adopters paying a higher price, that is usually the case, but not with Apple. Does anybody has an example of Apple doing a significant price drop after 2 months?

  • Mike, your gmail addy is in the screen, in case it matters.

  • I wish Nokia would concentrate on fixing its own phones instead of wasting time with stunts like this. I have an E62 and it’s terribly buggy, slow, crashes, and they gimped the ability to run 3rd party apps. Nokia refuses to issue a firmware update to U.S. users and instead abandoned the phone. I’m pretty sure I’m never buying another Nokia phone again.

  • hey nokia, what about the early N95 adopters like me who paid $700 only to watch u come out with not one but TWO upgraded versions in under 6 months?

  • This is just silly and childish. I had enough of people jumping on the iPhone hype bandwagon MONTHS ago.
