Google Adds Search To Google Reader

The most popular online RSS reader (depending on what stats you believe) just got better. Google has announced that Google Reader now has search.

The search box is located directly above the reading panel to the right of the Google Reader logo. Users can search all subscribed feeds or search by category/ tag.

Google Readers biggest competitor Bloglines recently released a completely new version that has been getting positive coverage; adding search to Google Reader (a feature Bloglines has had since May 2006) shines the spotlight back in Google’s direction.

It may be completely unrelated, but at the time of writing anyway Google Reader is experiencing difficulties with showing read/ unread items in the reading panel, showing all items as unread since roughly the same time search went live. The sidebar list of tags though is working fine.

This is great news, but I wish google would simply allow me to re-name tags. Instead, I have to create a new tag, select all blogs from the tag I want to transfer from, add the new tag to those blogs, then delete the old tag.

I know it sounds nerdy but those tags really keep me organized when trying to keep track of all of these never ending rss feeds.

A good feature for the users.
And, I agree with Jeff, with tags we can organize better!

I got this on my blog before you :)

Bloody hell…I dont see it yet….It has not been rolled out for me :-( or what…I saw this in google blog but not on reader

Announcement - Google Farts

Thanks Duncan, top notch news as usual.

Also notice that the unread item counts both in the interface and in the page title now show the actual number of unread items instead of just 100+

its there but when u search sth the thing keeps rotating and does not display results:S

The thing I wish Google Reader would integrate is sharing of information across their properties. I am a sucker for the little RSS snippets on the top of my Gmail and have added a whole bunch of RSS feeds through Gmail. Sadly, every time I open Google Reader I realize that my snippet feeds are not present in Google Reader and I don’t have the energy to go and add them all to Google Reader. Adding a feed in Gmail and having it show up in Gmail and vice versa would be a killer feature, for me at least.

I also think it’s funny that Google didn’t have search on the Reader until just recently, you would think that would be the first thing implemented, after all, they are a search company…

Yeah I used to wonder why it wasn’t there in the first place. I thought ’search’ is what Google did for a living :)

google will finally add everything of its own to the reader

This was a much needed feature. It’s about time.

Google Reader rocks. I love this new feature. Muwhahahaha.

they also changed the silly “All items (100+)” to “All items (1000+)” — at least for me. 1000 is a much better number, but I had no clue I had that many new items.

The drop-down combo is just stupid.
If I am searching for something there is nothing better than just type-and-click search, the way google does.

Get rid of that!

it appears that they also broke support for opera in the process, at least, it no longer loads for me, and it does in IE/FF.

My big thing is for Google Reader to show comments. Even if it’s only a single update 24 hours after the post, that would be good. Or a manual option.

Reading “the right news” just got easier, thanks to Google!

I don’t believe they have released the search feature to everyone, I’m still waiting for the search box to appear in my Google Reader.

Ha - this is funny. I really needed this feature over the weekend and just assumed it was there - Google usually adds search to everything else, so I assumed they had done to reader as well. Love it, however I’m glad I didn’t look for it when it wasn’t there - I would have thought it would be the first thing they would have included given that they insist on search and labelling rather than folders for gmail!
