The image carving/resizing video we posted last week has sparked quite a conversation. Most people have been very positive, although there has already been at least one response saying its a bad thing for the web (which seems a little dramatic to me).
Patrick Swieskowski emailed us this afternoon to say he’s created an online demo of the idea, based on using the seams of images to make the alterations. It shows how well this works in action, and users can upload their own images and manipulate them.
For now images can only be shrunk. Pat says he’s working on a way to increase the size of images by seam insertion, too.

that is pretty damn cool, the video that was shown before does not do it justice when compared to doing it for yourself.
Great job Patrick!
nice orli link michael – what that get u – 5 digg frontpages?
nice. useful, too.
The concept and the original video are cool. This demo, however, leaves a lot to be desired. (You wouldn’t be impressed if you hadn’t seen the video.)
The guy whipped it out in Flex! Running in a browser! I’m pretty impressed. The stuff you saw in the video was desktop-based.
I wonder what version of Photoshop will have this feature enabled?
Jon
can’t wait till this is ported to php
The flash version is not as accurate as the video demo at detecting “important” features. Take for example the van picture listed on their page.

The van is cropped out before the gravel beneath. It also says that improper cropping may be helped by toggling between vertical and horizontal but it does not seem to make a difference.
Still way cool though.
I used one of my own images I had on Flickr and resized it using this demo. All it did was crop off the top and mess up the colors around objects at the top part of the image. I certainly hope the real deal isn’t as bad as this demo.
The first post was about a video about a software. This is a prototype. The difference is that it works! That’s impressive to me.
Way cool. The guy that says it’s a bad idea for the web is so far off base it’s almost funny. “Use it for pie charts” and “I hate to think that someone would alter my photos”. Get over it, dude. If someone feels like it, they can already destroy your “artistic intent” with MS Paint. I can see a lot of uses for this tool and the technology is very impressive…
Super-cool
The only problem I see with this tool is that it could make it easier for people to manipulate pictures and send them as “eyewitness” photos of important events to the news media.
But hey, I’m a reporter. I blogged about it here:

To people who think that this is a bad idea for the web–think about how much of a pain it is to build a CMS. End-users don’t care about what fits in the box you created.. this opens up a huge opportunity for more flexible, more robust and ultimately more visually appealing implementations of custom CMS products. Layouts will be more flexible and you wont have to set different aspect ratios for specific layouts on the web any more… bring it on–one less thing to worry about!
What I’d like to know is when browsers will have this capability and adjust image sizes to fit into percetage-page-width controlled table tags.
On the one hand, it is really cool technology and it will make the web much more useable and beautiful – but on the other, I feel that we already have a world where reality has become over “photoshopped”. At least now people can become aware that most all models photos are fake pictures. People can generally tell CG content from real pictures. However, this technology makes digital manipulation automated in ways that affect the way scenes really look – not just brightness and contrast, but the geometry of the reality in the photo. Widespread use will be somewhat troubling – how do we trust what is in pictures anymore? While we already have this problem in a small degree today, it takes talented professionals to photoshop images well. When the ability to photoshop becomes fully automated, it will be even more difficult to know what is real, and what is computer generated.
Thats a good website ….thaks for the info…
I came across a online tool “Photo Booth like”.I am not sure it has been covered in TC or not, may be you can share with your readers…
I have updated a demo too on my blog..
