Interesting thing is that I noticed some problems with the Skype just before its outage. I use local Apache Server and Skype conflicts with it because possesses on the port 80th which is used by Apache too. So when I was trying to start my Apache, I failed until changed Apache's port to something different like 8080.

Has anyone had such problems with the Skype as I depicted above?

Overall Skype has provided a consistent and reliable level of service.
It is amazing in a way that this has never happened before.
It is amazing that Skype has managed to remain reasonably customer based - since they are a division and property of ebay. Ebay for those for have not been on the selling ( payment of fees to ebay) is a company with the lowest level of customer service and appreciation. Indeed it as if their employees are taught that " You Work for Ebay. God has appointed you for this duty".
It is true that Skype had no customer service line . However there is no need for one. The company informed its customers in its blog and acted to return service as fast as it could. Incoming phone calls to reassure users would of not brought service back any faster.
It shows in a way that being in a monopolistic situation can give a poor level of customer service whereas another division of the same company - with similar management being in a rapidly changing arena against a number of real competitors has a much better level of customer service.

sheeesh, people, chill :O no need to climb the barricades because of a two day downtime. every software and network faces issues of some sort now and then, and with the immense size and spread of the skype network I am surprised it hasn't happened more often. on the contrary, so far skype was a perfectly reliable and stable service for me.
I'll have to pass on my beloved skype calls for two days, and I guess people who use it to call clients will have to pick up landline for two or three days, but seriously...why the panic. "monumental screw-up"? I don't think so.

Phone companies have outages all the time. I can't imagine a computer service NOT having an outage (especially with all those windows users around.)

It's bound to happen, it is inevitable with any service. Calm down and take a break from work. Look at it as a blessing that you can breathe for a moment and actually enjoy that latte.

Well, that prooves one thing:
it's not a pure peer-to-peer app!

real P2P feeds (like torrent) works even with tracker server down.

BTW, if you sniff your skype packets at skype startup, you'll see that user registration, presence and call initiation is done with servers located in Estonia.
they share some info with long time clients (called nodes, i.e. they suck your bandwidth if you leave skype running all the time), but not registration info (hopefully).

AFAIK, the only real P2P part is after call initiation which is exactly the same in SIP with proper configuration.

it is 8:44 am EST on August 17...I am wondering when the service will be restored.....The service is no more a free service...we pay for it and therefore we should be able to rely on it....

I could never understand why there is a critical reliance on Skype since it is a one point of failure model, which is what I thought that we were getting away from in the new internet world. The better solution is to use SIP or IAX or such similar solution where you can go point to point, or through an exchange to the outside world, and should that exchange fail, there are multiple automatic backups. So Skype is great and all that, but single-points of failure are not the best option for a business.

I can just imagine the loss of revenue from such an outage. I use skype a lot, and now I should really consider having backup alternatives if they let me down.
