Online backup and storage is maturing and slowly getting the attention of the general consumer. Big players like Google and Microsoft have noticed the potential looks like they are trying a slice of the pie.

I have been reading about the online backup industry for a while now.
When it comes to online backup and storage, one website worth mentioning is the backup review site:

BackupReview.info

This very informative site, not only posts up to date news and articles from the industry, but also lists about 400 online backup companies and ranks the top 25 on a monthly basis. The site also features a CEO Spotlight page, where senior management people from the industry are interviewed.

I wonder how Google's GDrive and Microsoft's SkyDrive will perform at this ranking site going forward.

I have been an enthusiastic DriveHQ user for almost 2 years. Their service is great!

All GDrive features are long available and better on DriveHQ.com. Visit www.drivehq.com and watch the demo.

# Backup. DriveHQ Online Backup works great. It has a lot of high-end features, much better than GDrive, including versioning, scheduled backup, encrypted storage, compressed upload, incremental backup and resuming, etc.

# Sync. DriveHQ FileManager can sync multiple PCs, multiple user accounts.

# VPN-less access. You can access your data from anywhere using a web browser, any FTP client, or DriveHQ Cline software, or SMTP/POP3 email with Outlook!

# Collaborate. DriveHQ Group Account service is a true enterprise class collaboration platform. You can easily share folders to different people with different access rights. DriveHQ Group Account owner / admin can create/manage/delete sub-accounts.

# Disconnected access. On the plane? VPN broken? All your files are still accessible as DriveHQ FileManager can cache the data for offline access! DriveHQ even offers SMTP/POP3 emails for offline Outlook access!

DriveHQ offers basic service for free. So why the hype and why the wait? Sign up at: http://www.drivehq.com/?refID=2925384

Mr. Friend is right. Google and Microsoft are not really backup services. For backup, you need something you can just forget about.

Michael: I note in the reader comments that there is still a lot of confusion between storage and backup. I am glad you refer to GDrive and SkyDrive as "online storage" rather than backup. My company, Carbonite, is in the backup business. Backup, as serious players in this field know must be:
1) Completely automatic, set-and-forget (nobody remembers to "do" their backups)
2) Unlimited (or at least VERY large) capacity. If you are constantly running up against limits, you never know whether you're really fully backed up, and it's a pain. The average PC today has about 17GB of data.
3) Encrypted. Data must be encrypted BEFORE it leaves the user's PC. Communications should always be SSL. Nobody is going to use an unencrypted service for real backup.
4) Should be REALLY simple. Backup is not like file-sharing. It just runs in the background and there is no need for a lot of features. Like an insurance policy, really.

SkyDrive, and Google's G-drive are none of these. They are just "disk space." Your readers should not confuse the two.

Why not just use someone who provides unlimited storage. Yeah, eveone knows about Yahoo's, but a little known fact is that AOL has had this with their free AIM Mail service, even before Yahoo.

@James
You can store all types of documents on Omnidrive (documents/photos/videos/musics) and play them (or edit them) online, whereas the Google Storage can only accept photos and emails ... Plus, you have a WebDAV access (you will see Omnidrive as a disk on your computer) which is better than having to log into Picasa to upload your images. And when Google allow you only to share your photos, it's normal to offer the unlimited or "unmetered" storage : with Omnidrive, your photos would need to be downloaded 50,000 times in a month to reach the bandwidth limit. When you can share 2Gigabyte Videos with Omnidrive, it's very logical to have a limit.

Michael ... you are biased! "Both fell flat." - how so?!

The Google storage is good deal compared with Omnidrive:

Google: $75 / 25 Gig / Year
Omnidrive: $99 / 25 Gig / Year

And Google has unlimited bandwidth.

hardly any of this is new to the field of online storage.
what i was really looking forward to seeing was an automated periodic download of online content like QIF/ADPpdf's and such from financial institutions etc. and leaving it catalogued in the webdrive for later retrieval.

this would be quite helpful being how most of those only keep the data down loadable for about 90 days from release.

hardly any of this is new to the field of online storage.
what i was really looking forward to seeing was an automated periodic download of online content like QIF/ADPpdf’s and such from financial institutions etc. and leaving it catalogued in the webdrive for later retrieval.

To be frank, we were always looking up to Google with a concerned stare - what if they introduce free unlimited - but with prices like these (on Picasa)????
6.25GB ($25 per year)
25GB ($100 per year)
100GB ($300 per year)
250GB ($500 per year)
- why would someone use them and not use us (Fotki) where $30 a year gives you unlimited (Terrabytes if you wish/can) storage???
Beats me :)

Google's prices might not be great, compared to Yahoo Mail's unlimited free storage. But even Google has better prices than omnidrive http://www.omnidrive.com/products/

I'm glad to see Google do this; I'm probably less than a year away from filling my gmail space, and was thinking I'd have to use Google for My Domain (or whatever it's called) to get more space.

I don't adhere to the philosophy of, "everything I want should be given to me for free." I'm glad to get some free email space, but I have no objection to paying for more if the price is reasonable, and this seems reasonable to me.

In my opinion, online storage, regardless of purpose, should be used as a BACKUP solution. Here's why I use (and pay for) Google's storage offering and Yahoo's Premium Mail account:

E-Mail - I use Outlook to download a copy of all of my e-mail, but I don't haul my laptop around everywhere I go, so web-based mail is an added convenience. I love the convenience of accessing my personal e-mail accounts through a single GMail interface; however, I prefer the structure and appropriate header information that Yahoo! Mail provides when I need to send work-related mail. Yes I'm concerned with the security issues surrounding this approach, but not enough to change my ways.

Photo Backup - I've trained my family on Picasa, so Picasa Web Albums makes sense for us also. Sure there are cheaper options with fancier features, but the convenience of a single interface, the lack of confusing features, and the fact that I'm constantly using the program adds up to a smart online backup choice for me.

Well I just paid for the extra 6GB, only $2 or so a month - not even pocket change! How long does it take to be activated though?

MediaMax offers the largest quantity of free storage (25 GB) but is questionably reliable. Mozy offers one of the slickest interfaces - but is for backup only, and unlimited clocks in at $4.95/mo. Jungle Disk and other S3 GUI's are good but still require refinement.
