Megavideo: Does It “Beat” YouTube?
by Mark Hendrickson on August 7, 2007

Megavideo, a new online video sharing site based out of Hong Kong, has YouTube in its sights. In a video on its homepage, the company claims to best YouTube for ten reasons:

  1. Video publishers can earn money through a rewards program
  2. Publishers can also earn money through AdBrite in-video advertisements
  3. Users can move the playback position to anywhere in the video
  4. The website supports twenty languages
  5. The video player can be customized to match the designs of websites where you want to embed
  6. There is no maximum playtime for video uploads
  7. Video conversion takes no more than 30 minutes
  8. Videos can be uploaded in batch
  9. Original video files can be downloaded
  10. Megavideo loves you more than YouTube

Since users can also move the playback position to anywhere within a video on YouTube, and the last given reason is pure filler, only eight of these advantages seem to be justifiable.

The site is notable for its lack of banner advertisements. The company appears to be aiming to generate revenue by charging people for premium features. Premium members must pay at least $10 per month, but they can upload videos up to 5GB in size and their uploads get prioritized before regular members. Also, only premium members can download videos from the site (as opposed to streaming) and earn revenue from advertisements and the Megavideo rewards program.

Megavideo is provided by the same company that created Megaupload.

The technology, bells and whistles and Customization options appear to be far superior to YouTube - but the bottom line is the AVAILABILITY and SELECTION of videos to watch.

You just can not beat YouTube and MySpace.

Also it might not be cost effective for those giants to offer so many user friendly options and keep the huge database and free user base they have

Despite their limitations, we have to be grateful for the fact that we are all getting these services FREE

its only free for 72 (usually less) minutes. if you go over that you have to wait for 54 minutes to keep on using it.
that does not happen if you pay n amount of money on a monthly basis
megavideo sucks

it certainly does not love you more than youtube, only if you are willing to pay!
idiots

Actually, you are incorrect. Megavideo is saying you can skip ahead to any point in the video and it will start buffering / streaming from that point.

Youtube does not do this. In YouTube, you can skip to any point in the video, but only AFTER the entire video has downloaded.

Mark, you seem to have a VERY fast internet connection ;)

With YouTube you can NOT move the replay position unless that part of the video is already loaded.

With Megavideo you can move the replay slider to parts of the video that are not loaded yet. Loading and replay resume from the new position.

Just my 2 cents.

Timeshifting is possible in Youtube after their recent update. It’s an inherent Flash Video ability so it’s not like they pioneered some major technique.

Interesting spokesperson, that’s for sure.

One thing I wonder is why there isn’t more competition in the quality and display of the videos. If I can get full-screen with over 400×300 resolution I’d use anyone else. YouTube usually looks like garbage.

I watch the online video space carefully, and the stats from the industry clearly indicate that YouTube has 50% more audience than all other video networks combined.

This is no YouTube killer, Revver has tried the monetization aspect, and I’ve not seen a tremendous amount of adoption

But comparing these two companies in a headlines is somewhat sensational.

Here’s the stats on video network usage
http://www.web-strategist.com/.....marketing/

I’m not sure that I will love it more, but will definitely give it a try. Competition is good!

Mike is right. Megavideo is boasting their use of flash communication servers, which is allowing for the video to be skipped to any point pre-buffered. Google Video showcased this capability a year ago. It’s only time before YouTube matches. They are just slow to adapt, as seen with the instant full screen functionality implemented months after flash enabled it.

I noticed none of those reasons include “more videos” or “more users.” Both reasons why you use a video site. On the other hand, I think going for a pay model is pretty brave and could work out for them. If they don’t have many people working at the company then a few thousand “paying” users could make the company quite profitable.

The question then becomes can they get a few thousand paying customers? In a market that has like 50,000,000 users worldwide, I think they might have a shot…-Metagg

These are also the guys behind the p0rn site http://www.megarotic.com (first page is SWF, once you click through it’s definitely NSFW).

This is clearly not a YouTube competitor, just another video uploading service, with nothing really new to offer, except a different revenue model.

I’m really surprised this has been reviewed on TechCrunch, and with this particular headline.

If anything, the real YouTube competitors are the niche video websites, targeting users with specific video content, that know how to serve their communities better.

Hmmmmmm…10 reasons why this will end up in the Deadpool

1) It’s not YouTube
2) It’s not backed by Google
3) Megavideo…it just sounds stupid
4) YouTube gets more traffic then the rest of the video sharing sites combined
5) YouTube gets a ton of free publicity, Megavideo will have to work impossibly hard to get anywhere close
6) CNN will never have a Megavideo debate
7) Megavideo will never be on the iPhone
8) Trying to beat YouTube/Google in a technology war is just…dumb
9) Megavideo’s content can be seen on YouTube
10) Megavideo = Megastupid

I think it is you both stupid and arrogant.

11) Who would pay to watch more than 72 minutes of video?

Ouch! They need to turn down the reverb in that video.

I am not that impressed with Megavideo… The name is cheesy, the design feels very template like, orange and grey is very fatiguing, in fact it just feels cheap and gimmicky! A couple of test searches failed to compare with YouTube.

It is going to take some converting for me to give up YouTube. Still, I will humbly eat my words if MegaVideo takes off and does the ‘business’.

One more thing… The Megavideo chick in the video is not a patch on the gorgeous Morgan Webb!

Look at lulu.tv for monetization ideas

Just expressing my personal opinion here.

Isn’t Megaupload owned by Kim Schmitz aka Kimble?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Schmitz

I personally won’t hold my breath for any payments.
Who would work with a convicted felon and expect to get paid .

I think that if they start paying out good money then they may have good chance.

Does anyone notice how hard this girl is trying to speak with an american accent?

A valuable feature for all these sites would be full-screen. Youtube now does it, but only on youtube.com, not when it’s embedded.

Another thing they all need is RSS/Atom feeds with embedded Flash. Youtube does it, though not many know about it.

I can tell you one reason why it sucks. I hit play and it had to buffer for a good 5 seconds before it started playing.

That said, their player is nice. Youtube’s player doesn’t seek anywhere on their own site, only in embeds, which is very weird.

Craigster_response - August 7th, 2007 at 3:05 pm PDT

Craigster : Don’t be arrogant! Just because a man made a mistake in life doesn’t mean he will run a criminal enterprise his entire life! Why do you watch movies, shop at stores etc etc. run by criminals you don’t even know! Dumbass do your fishing research before you open your mouth!

As for Mark. Way to go man! You just made a big fool out of yourself by claiming that youtube does the buffering and you can preload the video at any given timeframe within the movie! Maybe you should spend an extra 2 mins doing some research!

And here I am a single person trying to make http://www.indianvideos.com work. How am I gonna compete with these huge sites with huge pockets?

Shall I give up? I already quit my day job also.

J/K

But any insight guys?

Tried to post some links, but the post didnt go through.

There is a businessweek article where the guy compares himself to Hitler

“Schmitz spent several months in pretrial detention, an experience that inspired him to try using his skills to make a legal profit. “That’s where I decided to use my knowhow and skills to become the world’s most successful businessman,” says Schmitz, with characteristic modesty. He adds, “Wasn’t Hitler writing Mein Kampf while being arrested? ”

Charming guy…

11. MegaVideo is run by a robot

Youtube’s delivery of video’s, even though you can’t start streaming anywhere in the video, is good enough for most people and most vids. They need to offer something truly disruptive to take on youtube.

Wow, this is great.

The story on this guy keeps getting better and better

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2.....algorithm/

I quote:

“Hacker stunt-double and convicted financial fraudster Kim Schmitz (aka Kimble) is up to his old tricks,
this time with a package of techno trickery for making a killing in the stock market.
To satisfy the dreams of instant fortune common to those who believe in fairy tales, he’s devised an
“AI-based decision system” for share trading which scientifically “selects the optimal
combination of trading strategies for current market conditions”. “

It’s the QUALITY that these video sites need to promote. YouTube video quality is TERRIBLE. Disgusting, overcompressed, 12 fps, ultra-pixelated 320×480 videos are going to be the end for youtube if they don’t hurry up and do something.

You can’t compare megavideo with youtube.

The site is operated from the guys who operate megarotic.com.
In my opinion Megarotic is full of stolen video files. I would guess that 99% of the content is stolen and the the entire adult industry is pissed about the company.

Also they operate megaupload and I opine that they manipulate their alexa ranking by forcing people to install the alexa tool bar.

Are they now paying people to upload stolen content on megavideo.com ?

I guess they have good reasons to operate their busines from Hong Kong.

Here is why I think they have a chance to become a serious Youtube competitor:

1. They own Megaupload.com, a site with 3 million unique visitors per !DAY!. Critical mass for Megavideo is guaranteed.
2. They offer 100% of the advertising revenue to the content owners which makes this an interesting playing field for big media companies as well as Internet celebs.
3. If Alexa.com is right they went from rank 350,000 to top 1000 in just 3 days? Daily rank 985? Thats like the biggest jump ever.

Plus their timing is brillant. Gootube has some Fortune 1000 enemies and I wouldnt be surprised if one of them gets their hands on Megavideo for much less than 1,6 billion.

ha ha, tim is such a shill.

Interestingly, this is the second company that I’ve heard of in two days that is planning on making it’s money through premium services. The other company is: OnlyBusiness.com, http://www.onlybusiness.com. I wonder if this is the beginning of a larger trend?

Check out: http://www.pass-ed.com/Living-Textbook.html

Allow me to offer my opinion on this matter.

Here are a few interesting facts.

All advertising spots and file download templates from megaupload.com
point to megavideo.com
I think that this is where all the traffic is coming from.
This means that the traffic growth from the last 3 days is not viral at all.
It suggests that it is a clever attempt to manipulate us into believing the site is taking off like a rocket.

On another interesting note, it seems that the site was launched a few days ago, however some video uploads seem to claim that they were uploaded weeks ago.

Would it be a far stretch to think that they simply stole all the content from other sites such as youtube etc.. and used it to populate megavideo.com ?

If that were the case then I think it might be the biggest case of copyright
infringement in internet history. Sad thing is I know for a fact a number of now popular dating sutes actually got started this exact way… Spruce Goose comes to mind. They could have used a better spammer tool to load the videos with key words.. this looks like send safe or ghost sender to me. LOL..

Vic: interesting, I did some research

This might be a “coincidence”, but I find it interesting that by looking at a few random videos,
the Youtube commentary is exactly the same as the one on Megavideo.com.

In my opinion Megavideo blatantly stole the videos and commentary from youtube.com and uploaded it to megavideo.com

I wish I had balls like that.

LOL

Search for the word youtube on megavideo.

Here is Leonardo di Caprio’s YOUTUBE EXCLUSIVE
http://www.megavideo.com/?v=LKKC6IIZ

hahaha

http://www.abum.com will beat youtube :) haha, in my dreams maybe?

Did anyone try the Megavideo/Youtube import feature? It Might explain why they have many Youtube videos. I just saw a forum posting from a guy who imported his entire Youtube account with over 600 videos to Megavideo. Pretty smart way to get tons of content.

Tim:

Interesting post.

Too bad that the timing involved makes no sense.

I doubt youtubers rushed in and quickly imported all their videos into megavideo in the last couple of days…

Just my humble opinion.

That seems awfully convenient.

I wonder if Leonardo Di Caprio did that.

It seems unlikely to me that the top 200k youtube posters decided to import their videos to megavideo.com in the last 3 days.

Plausible Deniability I guess…

by the way , is Tim = Kim ?

LOL

my daddy always told me: “if it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck. Its probably a duck…”

Sorry, they arrived too late. YouTube has first mover advantage…which is why they beat GoogleVideo and were bought. This competition will only offer YouTube the opportunity to make its product offerings strategically enhanced.

Also, why promote your video site with a poorly made video? Audio is a mess.

To Henry:

Isn’t it possible that a Leonardi Di Caprio fan imported this video? As far as I understand anyone can import any Youtube link to Megavideo. And Youtube does not own 99.9% of the content on their site. I don’t see the problem?! I saw Megavideo in beta 1 month ago. Thats plenty of time to import a lot of videos.

To Craigster (aka Henry):

Can you provide more information why you think this German guy is behind Megavideo? On Wikipedia it says he is a consultant for Megaupload and iFilm, Friendster… Anything solid would be welcome.

The only people that will be happy will be the RIAA and MPAA etc because now they have another company they can sue the pants off of for what they call copyright infringement.

How about cause the sync doesn’t completely line up in our own demonstration video”. Maybe “no direct mic used when we made our crappy video so it has crappy audio too”.

Tim (or Kim):

For the record.

I do not know Henry.

The opinions I posted are from google searches.

http://www.google.com/search?h.....tnG=Search

Megavideo and Megaupload are both registered in hong kong.
Furthermore Megaupload links 100% of their adspace to Mega Video.
Designs are extremely similar.

Putting one and one together here is not exactly rocket science.

HAHA, another interesting one

http://www.techcrunch.com/2006.....dnt-exist/

Tim is that you posting as “Tim from megaupload.com”

I must say, Tim sounds an awful lot like Kim.

Craigster (not Henry):

I am sorry to disappoint you but I am not who you think I am.

Please explain how in your “opinion” this German guy is linked to Megaupload or Megavideo. Any kind of evidence would be welcome. Did you see it in the company register or merely in some forum posting? What did you find on Google that makes you think he is behind those companies?

that women in their infomercial has the most annoying voice

Tim

Its getting late.

I had a good time digging all that stuff up, but I have to go spend some time with the family.

Everything I posted came out of google searches.

I don’t care about this enough to try and dig it all up again.

If you really want to know , just goto the google link I posted.

Geez… TC is now reviewing sites that steal other sites’ content. What’s next guys, are you gonna review a new Bittorrent site?!?!

Also noticed that they took content from other sites, never mind that a good majority of content is licensed and clearly infringes on copyright theft. I hope they get their asses sued… I don’t think this site has a chance in hell and it looks like they’re willing to break every rule/law in the book to manipulate their site rankings. This company is not worthy of being on TC.

It’s definately affiliated with Megaupload aka kim. Both sites use the exact same info in the registrars:

Megavideo has a chance everywhere else EXCEPT the US for several reasons:

1) Asia, Europe, Latin America, Russia are wide open as markets. YouTube really only has market share strength in North America and I would say it is overestimated in its strength there. It is extremely weak in Asia. I would say also that Asia is more attractive as a market because
- much better internet infrastructure. I mean come on; if people in the US still consider 10 mbit fast…when average here is 80 to 100 mbit. Then add in that hosting, colocation and other domain services are extremely expensive in the US.

2) US online users often exhibit very overt xenophobia and misinformed homerism. Just in terms of the services from Asia alone have been fraught with accusations of imitation, “poor quality”, or connection with some nefarious illegal activity. Even though most of what you call innovation in terms of concepts and execution today in the online space has been already old news in Asia.

Orkut is looked down upon because it has a primarily Latin American base.

Black Planet; a networking platform that seems to serve more of an African American audience and is fourth in traffic and engagement rankings seems to be COMPLETELY uncommented on and unhyped by any of the commentators, Tech Crunch included. I could accuse racism but I know its just racial ignorance.

3) Because the US government seems to be in the pocket of the RIAA and MPAA in addition to having a very screwed up patent system, things will be more problematic for online media services.

4) To be truthful, Megavideo offers incremental differentiation and takes essentially the same platform as other online video sites out there

However, all that being said…nothing stays static or heavyweight in the online biz for that long. It’s very fluid. I believe also no longer will market share dominance in the US really be as much as an advantage as it is now.

Megavideo should adopt less of a focus on the US and concentrate on many of the emerging markets of the moment.

I mean nobody though Dubai would be as important as it is becoming in the Middle East. There’s opportunities more lucrative and filled with better growth prospects.

There’s a world with better connections and less issues out there; ultimately I believe non-US players will come into prominence very quickly and very soon.

Disclaimer: I am our global platform planning/operations head for Freechal which will release an online platform soon. This comment is purely my own opinion and not representative of any of the opinion of my company or team.

Oh, and 53. Do some googling and you’ll see. mega* is one of the companies affiliated with this guy and he’s got/had a few companies setup through a shell called monkey ltd.

He used to have a few other websites at kimble.org kimvestor.com kimpire.com trendax.com but appear to be down now.

59: You sound like a whiny little kid with an inferiority complex due no doubt, to your abnormally small penis.

@John -

Youtube, google video, and daily motion all do quite well internationally. Maybe you should brush up on your research.

Kim Schmitz, I’m sure you’ll be reading this at some point. For what it’s worth I’ve enjoyed your original (old) site over the years. I remember coming across it around 1999. It’s a shame you don’t keep a blog or some way to find you. I guess I’ve always thought of you as a computer geek like many of us, but mishaps aside, you’ve always pushed the limits in what you do. Good luck.

They don’t seem to be rising above competition. 5mb isn’t enough.

They seemed to be focussed on the #1 spot, which is good. However I think they should really venture in value based rev share.

More of my thoughts at
http://abhishek.tiwari.com/200.....-tubetown/

This will be name to reckon with. Youtube kickstarted the online video revolution. Its just the beginning.

@ 62 (Ian)

You have to qualify what you mean by “do well”. Oh and Daily Motion is based in Paris and is French; not American. Americans are always trying to rob the French :).

Alexa, as useless as it is anyways, is even more useless in deriving international traffic data and you often have to rely on regional sampling metric solutions. Aggregated traffic data from multiple sources come out with this:

In most cases Youtube is an also-ran, Google Video and Daily Motion do not even register. Rankings at the present:

In Japan: 1) Mixi 2) Ameblo 3)Nicovideo 4) Gyao 5) Ameba 6) Youtube
In Korea: 1) Pandora.tv 2) Freechal Q 3)Mncast 4)Diodeo 5) Mgoon
In France: 1) Daily Motion 2) Youtube
In Germany: 1) Myvideo 2) Clipfish 3) Youtube
In Latin America: 1) Terra Networks 2) UOL 3) YouTube

Here are some links to data/or metric solutions

http://www.koreaclick.com
http://www.japan.internet.com
http://www.xitimonitor.com

Regional online media alternatives often have larger market share, more engagement ( time spent per visit, up/down activity) and local impact than YouTube.

Okay?

@whois (61)
Oh you Freudians are always obsessed with penises…and penis envy. I look at you, like a Skinnerite, and know that you must have had mucho negative reinforcement as a child…you know being dropped often on your head when you opened your mouth

At least YouTube works in Firefox.

So, the latest ‘Giant Killer’ stands up to the block.

The thing about video sites and youtube, as I read somewhere, is that they will have to something radically different to shift them off the top spot.

Just making a site, which is (possibly) better around the edges is not good enough.

I am not sure what is, but that is for the market to decide. At the moment, youtube has the advantage which no flashy gimmick can change: vast amounts of content.

This new site has done the one thing that is possible to remove this advantage: Steal it.

If they get away with it, they might be with a chance. If not. Bleh.

i really don’t see anyone actually knocking youtube off because they have been around long enough to stake their claim but if another company has a chance i will keep an eye out, but as its been said before other companies have tried the whole “pay” thing and youtube is still on top.

67 - Spoken like an arrogant ass. You come on here spouting all kinds of nonsense and expect no one to come back at you. All you can do is try and jump on your high horse and try to label everything (homerism, xenophobic, freudism, etc) as if you’re some kind of authority while it is obvious you don’t even understand how to apply the labels you are using. Hahaha. What a moron.

By the way..your site sucks ass, I don’t think you’ll be challenging youtube either outside of your neck of the woods.

Exactly how is this revolutionary? Customization and ad monetization? Companies like Fliqz have been offering these features, and do a better job as far as I can tell.

megavideo should be started with a viral campaign. “Top ten reasons to ‘i-dont-know-what” isn’t the best one…

Man that video quality sucks, and the girl is ugly.

One more derogatory comment on the girl in the infomercail and I’m calling Rev Jesse Jackson and Rev Al Sharpton.

The issue is the site. Will it take youtube down. I dont know who this guys is that may or may not be behind the site. From the links so far he is a colorful individual indeed. (Barunum would be proud of this kid) They seem to have the traffic to pull it off but then as some people have pointed out that doesnt fit the mold either with views and such.

The fact it appears they stole the content to jump start this monster isnt a positive sign either. Will it be a contender? No doubt if its legit.

Im with you Alan - post #69 “This new site has done the one thing that is possible to remove this advantage: Steal it.”

this sure is an interesting thread.

I wonder if any media people are reading this.

I think this might make a juice story all on it’s own.

That guy Kim sure is a character.

Maybe I should write an article for it and call it “Scamming your way to the top”

By the way, this is the same company that owns http://megarotic.com/.

They charge you for watching other people’s videos.

That is why they are in Hong Kong.

Hm, nice service. Especualli this three features:

3. Users can move the playback position to anywhere in the video
8. Videos can be uploaded in batch
9. Original video files can be downloaded

That’s Filipina sex guru Asia Agcaoili. She owns her own adult video sharing site.

You can download free from YouTube using third-party websites, so it goes down to 7, and I think many of the other reasons are fillers too. I mostly use YouTube to watch 5-10 minute shows and vlogs, not illegal films. And you can upload more than 30 minutes to YouTube as well, so it goes down to 6. I’m going with the community on YouTube :P

omg…. she is *soooo* annoying.

im still for youtube despite reason no. 3 because megaupload is unfair to the philippines IMO in terms of downloading. i even looked at the megavideo reward countries and philippines is not there. i dont care about the languages they offer. if they can’t even provide the same opportunity for my country, i wont bother.

Megavideo’s ad distribution platform is fully capable of supporting the Philippines, Jamie. Why Megavideo wouldn’t simply use that capability is a mystery.

Checked out the site. Somebody has uploaded videos that belong to ME without my permission, and worse, my username was stripped from it.

Even worse, a lot of popular people at You Tube has videos in this site, sometimes with whole channels being uploaded, and original usernames stripped off.

You can see whole channels with mostly thewinekone videos in it. Same is true for happyslip, renetto, daxflame, thehappyshow, nalts, gregsolomon, and a lot LOT more than I’m able to mention.

If this is how Megavideo will “BEAT” You Tube, then this is a poor way of doing it.

hi mike! apparently whenever i try to download something from megaupload, it always says the download slots for the philippines are taken. no philippines for the list of countries also.

if megavideo loves you more, by means of allowing users to import youtube videos they don’t own to their account, and earn points for themselves, then that’s not “love”.

the list i was referring to is found in megavideo’s rewards page

Why the hell does Megavideo take soo much time to buffer?

hmmm, the worst thing is they never pay ,i tried it out in megaupload ,i eanred 6 lakh points in over 6 months and redemmed for 5 lakh points wich they say offer lifetime memebership and 500$

i got the lifetime membership, but the money never arrived in my paypal account

and also wen i bought my prem acc ,if i wrote a email for support,i wud get a reply in less than 5 hours,

after i redeemed and sent inumerable mails reagrding my money like 5 months ago ,didnt get a reply mail still

so money paypemt ALL THAT IS JUST A JOKE

ONE THING IS LIKE IS THEIR SPEED IF U HAVE A PREM ACC

IM IN INDIA AND I GET LIKE 300 KBPS OF DOWNLOAD SPEED

youtube and megavideo both have illegal videos…
youtube got famous because of their illegal videos (films and songs and tvshows)
now megavideo stole content from youtube..

I honestly think that megavideo is much better than any other video sharing site. I have used it myself on my Forex trading website a lot of times to host videos and it works like a champ. Check out my site where i have hosted these videos.
