Facebook Outage

Facebook is down, and has been so since at least 10 am PST. Anyone notice it down earlier than that? We’ve emailed the company for their comment.

Update: Facebook is now back up as at 11:30am PST

Update: Statement from Facebook:

This morning, we temporarily took down the Facebook site to fix a bug we identified earlier today. This was not the result of a security breach. Specifically, the bug caused some third party proxy servers to cache otherwise inaccessible content. The result was that an isolated group of users could see some pages that were not intended for them. The site has now been restored and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

    OUCH!

  2. thinker

Looks like a deployment gone wrong.

  3. Suraj Luke

My MSN has been bombarded with messages saying Facebook is down! Puzzles me what they are upgrading to without giving us any clues :(

  4. Shannon Clark

I had problems loading facebook early this morning, around 2am or so PST.

Also worth noting that mobile facebook (http://m.facebook.com) seems, at least as of a few minutes ago, to be working, so the “updating” is not for 100% of their servers… of note as well, mobile facebook does not appear to do any browser detection - so does not load in a regular, non-wap browser.

  5. Kyle

Hearsay has it that this was due to a unexpected privacy breach whereby users were receiving messages intended for other users.

  6. curious

any word on when this will all be fixed?

the world is coming to an end…

  7. Viet

Funny! I was going to post the exact same screen shot to my blog. :)

  8. Sergio

    I need my facebook……..

  9. Larry Chiang

In other news, my personal productivity has jumped 200% because facebook is down and I can’t spam friends with a duckie gift

  10. Zaid

Leave it to facebook to define the web2.0 blue screen.

  11. Oyvind

Norwegian newspapers are reporting that users where able to read other users messages.

What would we do without FaceBook or MySpace ?

We spend so much time on this that don’t matter that that we
we forget to give time to things in our lives that are important such as our families.

  13. Raphaël Arbuz

Facebook has been quite slow from France for the last 10 hours. Just like something was happening… Funny to see such a big website down…. And it just comes a day after we released our facebook app!

I’m having the same problem and I can’t help but wonder if all of the applications that the website now supports isn’t slowing it down and slowly making it unusable. The truth of the matter is that while the applications are nice time savers, there was hardly anyone clamoring to put their Netflix queue on their Facebook profile. I guess there’s no turning back now but I enjoyed the minimal, faster Facebook.

There was something wacky this morning with their HTTP headers, too. Our proxy started displaying cached pages all over the place instead of updated content, causing several Facebook apps, including our own, to break.

  16. sadat

Funny it seems to me that myspace.com is running quite slowly today, perhaps because in lieu of facebook everyone is returning to pokey old myspace?

  17. Pat

facebook been logging me out constantly and displaying “You can’t log in now we’re in maintenance” for the last 2 days…

  18. Blain Reinkensmeyer

The site no longer loads, I’d say facebook is not “upgrading” anymore, it is down!

  19. Brian Fioca

Service has been spotty for me since early Sunday, when I started getting a “Hey, your account is temporarily unavailable due to server maintenance” message. This is just the icing on the cake. I’ve been mostly facebook-less for days now, which is bad because I have a number of in-development platform applications as well as some that have launched. Seems like they’ll need to change their processes if they’re truly going to be the application platform of the internet…

  20. Gilou

Service is definitely down or when it’s not, it’s buggy and slow…Is Facebook UNDER TERRORIST ATTACK???!!!

  21. Geeman

    facebook down. who cares?

  22. BurnsBothEnds

I don’t get a screen like the one posted above, mine says “Facebook is temporarily unavailable. We are working on it…” but my Firefox Facebook toolbar still has me logged in, so I could conceivably get notifications about anything happenning, whether someone on my friends list gets online or if I got a message or anything.

  23. Dan

I couldn’t access my account the entire day yesterday. Facebook sucks.

  24. Jesse

I hate facebook, on the plus size, last night’s episode of Entourage was great. I saw it on http://www.cavenger.com

  25. Ray Burt

If this were a Microsoft product, people would be railing against the Redmond-tyrants and their inability to develop any decent software.

Why does Facebook get a free pass? Doesn’t seem right….

  26. mark

Time for competitors like ClutterMe to take the reigns.

  27. Lawrence Sinclair

I noticed facebook start to get very slow to respond and fail to do so frequently around 1am PST while I was testing a facebook application I am developing. It was not until this morning, when I was working with a developer in Viet Nam that I was sure the problem was Facebook and not my Internet connection.

  28. Stop w/ the Facebook

Full Tilt Poker was down the other day for a few hours. Coincidence? Or conspiracy?

  29. Lawrence Sinclair

Oddly, it was Truemors.com that was the first site to let me know that this was more than just my personal problem.

  30. Mattk

With BlackHat and DefCon starting tomorrow, do you think that someone intentionally exploited it to prove a point? It would make sense, given that they beat the privacy drum loudly.

I have no proof of this, but the timing feels like its more than a coincidence.

  31. Heather

Well something strange is going on because earlier today I signed in and the homepage was mine, but everything else was someone else’s, the Inbox, Friends List, Profile excreta. So I tried in a new window and the same thing kept happening….eventfully I get in my real file.

  32. Jay

Hmmm, I wonder if they gave into pressure from ConnectU lol.

  33. Ryan Christensen

Things look to be back online…

  34. Simon

Sites go down. They come back up. Who cares? It’s not like having your primary IM tool go down or your cell carrier dropping all calls. Perspective people.

  35. Bruno Patatas

Since 9am GMT that I wasn´t able to access Facebook. It started giving log-in problems, and sometime after then the Web 2.0 blue screen of death appeared.

  36. Gijs

Facebook works in the netherlands, maybe server update??

  37. sadat

I’m actually getting work done.. maybe this is a blessing?

  38. A.B.

    On my computer Facebook works…

  39. BurnsBothEnds

    I’m back on facebook, too.

  40. gogo

I use hi5. What is facebook?

  41. Digg

reason to upgrade… To avoid copyright fragement…

Facebook will go to court soon. ConnectU accused facebook for stealing source code.

  42. Adi

    What was Facebook again???

  43. Tanner Beatrix

Think Mark Zuckerberg’s lawsuits have caught up with him? Was this site shut-down a legal mandate?

  44. Ryan

This morning at around 11am Central It was up, but then shortly it went down.
    It’s still down for me.

  45. Chris

No problems at all today for me (Toronto network), although yesterday I couldn’t get on until evening. Perhaps Facebook is doing their upgrade network by network.

  46. Richard

Why is this news? Every type of service, web or real world, has interruptions to service at some point or other. If it was down for days on end, maybe that would be interesting. Come on TechCrunch… have you got nothing better to write about?

  47. Pat Phelan

    happening since 11am GMT

  48. Pat Phelan

work being completed at an extraordinary rate today here in Europe

  49. Ilya Lichtenstein

    Facebook down. Armageddon promptly begins.

  50. Jason

    http://facebook.com does not work
    http://www.facebook.com does work

  51. Mark

It’s “up”, but it’s not quite right. For example, if you click on a person that you aren’t connected to, you’re brought to a page where you see a small profile picture with a couple actions you can take. Now, for some reason, the profile picture is clickable, but then it just takes you to an empty page…

  52. Jef Harris

I wonder if this has anything to do with the outage.

Did they get hacked ? http://www.mdibb.co.uk/2007/07.....ked-today/

  54. Hutch Mahon

There is some serious breaks in Data Protection at Facebook: why? because when logging into facebook it took me into another users inbox, this happened to my mates too.
    whats going on?

  55. Sam Winstanley

I also got somebody elses profile when I logged-in. How much of a rush exactly where they in when they wrote FB, did they forget to read security 101?

  56. Amy Wilsch

wow some of you guys seriously need to get a life…..

  57. Dominic

Gracious me…..The War in Iraq continues, soldiers dying , and this is brings techies world to an end.

  59. Wes

  60. Nerd Forum

Hah, that’s pretty sad. Any idea exactly what went wrong?

  61. Will

I’ve checked periodically throughout the day, its 6pm here (Central Time) and still no facebook. My sister is probably having a mental meltdown without know what he friends are up to.

  62. Will

errr 4pm, wrong number, laying down and typings is too much of a task for me

  63. Allen Stern

I just wrote a column about why this outage matters - too much to paste in here:
    http://www.centernetworks.com/.....ge-matters

  64. todd sawicki

It actually started yesterday afternoon as I noted on my blog (starting seeing outages mid-day yesterday) - http://www.sawickipedia.com/bl.....nvulsions/

  65. Sina

There seems to have been a major increase in page-load speed since the outage ended. Facebook pages are being generated a lot quicker - maybe this was a server upgrade?

  66. allison

It was down around 2:30am pST today

  67. David Mackey

Ahh, this is disappointing. I had hoped for a new release w/exciting new features.

  68. AshelyBrown

I hope it would recover later!

  69. Rachel

a little shutdown and everyone’s panicking! shows how addicted we all are to facebook.
