what stikes me about the service now, is that it’s more like a taxi service for packages, rather than a flat rate parcel service.

This is a nice concept. I know that couriers have been providing this type of service within city limits for years, but offering interstate service is new, particularly in a state the size of California. This will be one business model to watch. If successful, look for copycat or franchised offerings to spread across the USA.
