The "why's" vary from company to company but the general feeling is that the custom social networking platform allows them to speak to their core audience. It is also a great way to do market research, you have an assembled group of your prospective customers gathered in one spot discussing industry relevant information. It can truly be a business blessing if done properly.

An interesting platform I stumbled into is SociaLAVA (www.socialava.com) from VirtualWeb (www.govirtualweb.com) – it lets you have a full blown social layer on top of your website in matter of minutes… worth to check it out

It would be great if you could get Ning as a self-hosted package. It seems very slick but I don't like being stuck with their hosting and have that leash around my neck.

I've used Ning and KickApps. I definitely recommend Ning because it is user-friendly and the tech support is usually prompt and helpful.

KickApps on the other hand is horrible. The platform is missing many important social network features such as privacy controls. Moderation on KickApps is time consuming, tech support is useless and the site is often down. I've also had members complain about random glitches like not being able to delete specific comments or not being able to get certain profile settings to stick.

I'm being asked to set up a OneSite network soon. I've got my fingers crossed in hopes that it works as well as Ning. I'll give an update in the future.

I'm looking to create a social networking site with a calendar/rsvp function similar to meetup.com but only for one main group. I would also like the ability to have an administrator blog and use my own domain name... any suggestions?

Can you do an update to your original 9, so they can be compared to the new 34. I'm sure since you wrote the artical in 2007 these 9 companies have upgraded their services. Thanks
