YouTube: Now With Customizable Player

Duncan Riley

YouTube has launched a new “custom player” feature that allows users to customize embedded YouTube videos.

Users are able to customize player features including the name of the player, color theme, layout (a standard layout or one with related videos to the right), and content.

The content feature allows users to include their own videos or other videos from a YouTube Favorites List or YouTube playlist.

Examples as below. We were unable to embed the player with the related videos to the right due to a width consideration (it’s 780px wide) but the shrunken screen shot shows what it looks like. Below that is a custom embed from Chris Pirillo, who I also have to thank for the tip.

The new feature can be accessed at youtube.com/custom_player.

Another thing you haven’t picked up on mike is that you can skip to anywhere on this player, just like google video.

Mike didn’t write it but looking at it now you are right. All in all a pretty cool feature set :-)

I’d be nice it the order was customizable to be reverse chronological.

The way it is now, you are displaying the first video on our set and not hte most recent by default.

That’s not blog-like.

A little disappointed actually! After looking at the features and choices for one minute you realize there is almost nothing to do there.

Limited color schemes, why not give us more so there might be someone that matches our design.

The features that they have now are great, but I expected so much more from google/youtube. We might have been spoiled by large companies releases lately, so small thing are not impressive that much any more.

Sorry duncan, i guess i stop seeing names after 3am (est)

I tend to see this as a cup half full as opposed to a cup half empty. There’s some nifty features, sure it’s not perfect and doesn’t provide everything but it is a step in the right direction. Now if only we could get the RHS related video feature on a smaller embed :-)

I agree Duncan, it is a great first step, which other video sites does that -zero, so we should be glad. This is awesome and looks much better than the old one comparable to Revver and Brightcove videos

This is exactly what I expected to find out after reading the title o.us poetry. Thanks for informative article

Okay, fine - I won’t kiss all types of Ashton Arse anymore for the post below- I will direct you to my Ebay nerd sales, instead though. BuyBuyBuy my comic books! Demi loves full runs of Uncanny XMen and Wolverine. Seriously. Rumour and Scout do too! TechCrunch is the new KFC without the Colonel and the Posh without without the Spice. What? I don’t know…….

Wow, that was the stupidest YouTube video I’ve ever seen. WTF!

@Chris

“I agree Duncan, it is a great first step, which other video sites does that -zero, so we should be glad. This is awesome and looks much better than the old one comparable to Revver and Brightcove videos”.

Brightcove allows customisation and branding…not sure when last you visited…

This step is a great milestone for YouTube. But the video with this retarded guy on it is kind of bothering me. That is not a good marketing strategy I guess.

It looks like a cool feature, does anyone know if this feature is starting to catch on with youtube users?

Embedded player needs full screen option.

I wonder why its not there ? is it security limitation in Flash player?

Very cool! I’ll definitely check it out.

now i wish they would put this on socialsuggester.com

This looks great.

Pirillo, however, is a screaming effing moron.

TO WIDE FOR MOST BLOGS..

NO FIELD TESTIN G

Intersting feature from youtube, but I am not sure it is as ass kicking as what searchles offer. Searchles is not a video online/sharing site like myspace or youtube. However, their Searchles TV lets people create video channels assembled from the numerous video-sharing sites including youtube, myspace, google, etc on the net. The channels are packaged inside Searchles’ own Flash player and provide a dynamic way to add more content on the fly. They were just covered on CNET Tech blog by Josh Wolf.

“I agree Duncan, it is a great first step, which other video sites does that -zero, so we should be glad. This is awesome and looks much better than the old one comparable to Revver and Brightcove videos”

vSocial has been doing this for over a year with their “myBrand” player, and they did it before that with “adplayer”. what do you mean zero? all kinds of video sites offer this now.

I agree with Larry. People these days have video loaded on various sites – youtube, metacafe, liveleak, myspace, etc. What counts is letting users to mash up their favorite videos of the same subject from all these sources into one channel. The reality is that all the online video sites (youtube, metacafe, liveleak, myspace) are all in the online video business. As far as I know, Searchles is the only one doing this.

Hey guys!

What are you doing here?

They are giving away Ooma phones in the other room!

=^)

To be honest i don t like it, they have to do better!!!

The above video looks funny. To understand the trick, watch his left hand movement!

Chris, we now know your “20 year in the making” project. Did you mean 20 seconds in the making? :-)

@19&21,
Nice astroturf. Keep drinking the koolaid.

I don’t want to “mash” anything; I wanna click play, sit back, and enjoy pirated content.

I think it would be better than this.

Customization is good. Videomakers interested in branding their own player for a white label solution might be interested in Revver. Our player lets publishers replace Revver’s branding with their own - here’s an example from the wild (Ninemsn YourCut):

http://yourcut.com.au/playback....._id=219916

Also, we’ve got a super duper customizable widget that allows publishers to embed entire collections of videos on their site, for easy browsing and playback of multiple videos. For an idea of just how customizable, check out the documentation at the Revver Developer Center:

http://developer.revver.com/widget/js

Plus, we share revenue with all publishers, including the little guys :)

You can create any video interface you wish and stream videos from youTube directly into your custom interface using video.Maru. Of course you need to have the Flash authoring tool to create the interface but you don’t need to write any code.

Hi, is there anybody who knows what the button with the three dots next to the play/pauze button is doing ?

HAHAHa chris pirillo is hillarious. i dont care what you douches say, he’s pretty funny. hahaha-hohoho disappear! re-appear! ha ha HA. i wanna party with this dude.

Great!

but still too “default skin” i think. they can improve it.

That video is hilarious! Not sure if I care much about the youtube changes though.

cast42: the button with the three dots switches “play single”/”play all”.

http://www.mytubex.com lets you create youtube playlists for your myspace profile or any webpage. It has like 100 skins you can choose from. Check it out!

Have a look at http://www.giuseppecostanza.it/yourtube/index.php
it’s a youtube custom player with great customization options (RGB values, sound volume, buffer time, etc.)
