Reddit co-founders, Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, sold their company to Conde Nast at the end of last year. Now they’re planning giving their laptops a liquidity event.
They’re placing the two Apple G4 Powerbooks (12″ and 15″) used to start Reddit on this eBay auction. 100% of the proceeds are going to the American Brain Tumor Association.
The laptops come adorned with all those super-rad Reddit alien stickers Alex designed and the palm imprints of the founders themselves. Alex guarantees “it will at least double your already obscene valuation”, but notes “Luck not included”.
Bidding is starting at $300 + $60 shipping and handling.

tsk tsk tsk
Negative:
“Not a PCI card, so I had to incur return shipping and buy a different G Card!”
and why were reddit founders selling a wheel chair?
I think he prefers Alexis
I believe his last name is spelled “Ohanian.” The “-ian” at the end of his name is representative of his Armenian heritage…much like my last name.

Now if they were Windows laptops…
the founders listen to Creed - lol, that’s their inspirational music
what will it take to post my sticker on that notebook cover for everyone to see?
Waste. Of. Space.
Cool, does it comes with Reddit’s source code in it?

Because they didn’t need it any more. Duh.
I hear Condé Nast is also looking into acquiring the video site http://xoinks.com as well. It looks like they are building up a nice empire.
I bought the bandanna. It is sweet.
Like what they say, it’s like owning a web 2.0
Buying some old apple laptops, fun!
Why the wheelchair?
Oh how I loathe that site. Not the idea necessarily, just the results. Nice cause, but really– it’s not that charitable. I bet the deduction after the premium they get for the exposure and charity will be close to what the cash value was. Altogether the story adds up to a solid ‘whatever’.
Their intent seems solid - awareness for a not-for-profit, independent organization and 100% proceeds - seems win-win
Who cares about these guys? They think they are legends. Hate to say it but reddit sucks! I’m never a hater, but this whole ebay bidding shit and whole web 2.0 look at me my company was sold bullshit so give me attention when i sell my laptop on ebay, believing that I am some U2 Bono is so stupid!
If they want to donate to a cause then why not just fork over some of their acquisition dollars?
My brother has an incurable brain tumor, he is 32. Thanks for raising awarness on this topic!!
oh Sam, you are such an unhappy soul.
they can’t give over their VC money to a charity — they are bound by a contract forbidding them to do so
and reddit is (in many ways) better than digg… the major plus that reddit has over digg is the audience is at least 20 years older.
Will it blend?
I’m a reddit reader, but this is WTF’d. Musty laptops with the guys’ stickers on ‘em, and I’m supposed to care? Sam is right: they are not yet legends.
yeah…I agree with Jesse. Let’s get that blender guy to try to do a macbook pro.

Did it ever occur to the nay-sayers that they have picked raising awareness for this charity for personal reasons?
I think it’s a great idea and I know that it has pure intentions.
I think there was 2 out of 24 that said “good job” without any other negatives
I will be the third
“Good Job guys” … -RB

I’m sorry to hear that. Thanks for for writing; I know this modest bit of fundraising will do little to end this terrible affliction, but I tell myself that every little bit helps.

While I appreciate your cynicism, this decision was not motivated by a desire for personal exposure.

You’re right, we’re not legends. You’ve undoubtedly read my disclaimer in the eBay listing: “Please hurry and bid before we fall even further into Internet obscurity!!!”

Yeah, I was in a bit of a rush and listed an AGP card as a PCI card. Whoops. He got his money back, but the blemish is still on my permanent record. Needless to say, I won’t be shipping the wrong laptops
